Bedroom Lighting TipsThe first step for bedroom lighting tips is to decide how much you would like to spend on artificial lights. There is a diverse range of models from which to choose.
Then, have a good mix of task and background lighting so you won’t leave the house with one brown shoe and one black shoe. Tungsten and halogen are the principal types of light used in the bedroom. Tungsten is a traditional, soft, and gold-tinted light, while halogen light is newer, crisper, and whiter.
Comparatively, tungsten light is perfect for warm background lighting, while halogen works well in low- and main-voltage lights. It is especially suitable for task lighting, often working better than traditional tungsten lamps for reading in bed, particularly in fittings mounted on the wall or attached to the bed head
Try these bedroom lighting tips to create a relaxing atmosphere while providing bright spots for reading and other activities:
Dim it - Try not to have too many lights in the bedroom. Sometimes all you need to prepare for bed are soft lights from matching bedroom lamps.
Blind it - When natural light gets too bright, like at the tropics, use well-designed blinds to diffuse and control the light.
Light color - The color of the bedroom walls will affect how much lighting is needed, so bear in mind that dark tones absorb light, and pale colors reflect it.
Bed switch - Just as you can switch lights on at the door, you should also be able to switch them off from the bed. This is to prevent the need to get out of bed prior to nodding off.
Private reading - For reading in bed, use an adjustable glare-free wall-mounted lamp that casts the light where you want it, so you don’t disturb your sleeping partner. A table lamp with an adjustable arm and shade will also do. Just make sure the lamps are compatible with your room decor.

Making a Bed with Luxury BeddingDecorating or redecorating a bedroom is a time consuming and frustrating experience. Knowing what we want and finding the perfect bedding ensemble isn’t always a perfect fit. Today, consumers have more bedding choices other than the traditional quilts and bedspreads of yesteryear. Textile companies have answered the needs and desires of consumers by creating comforters in various thicknesses and also introduced Matelasse Coverlets and Duvet Covers in diverse styles, assorted fabrics, and color ranges. We see beautiful luxury, designer bedding collections in magazines and day dream a moment before discarding them as “too expensive.” But when given the facts it’s easy to see that luxury bedding and linens are actually a better return on our investment due in part by manufacturers crafting bedding geared towards home owners who simply want the best available. Bedding that highlights the room, feels fantastic and will hold up to everyday use throughout the seasons, surpass our expectations on comfort and provide years of enjoyment. While it is true that quality bedding can be purchased off store shelves, the savings are minimal yet comfort, quality, selection and value may be compromised.
Bedrooms are used today for more than just sleeping. It’s a quiet retreat where we can curl up with a good book, look through magazines, work, watch television, or simply have fun, playing and spending time with family. Bedroom d
Wants Outweigh Security Needs For HomebuyersGood security should be an essential factor when purchasing your new home. Buying decisions are quite often made on the size of kitchens or bathrooms with little consideration given to the importance of a good home-security package.
As a security consultant, it’s hard for me to comprehend that homebuyers are more interested in crown mouldings than a practical home-security system. Priorities need to be reassessed by new home purchasers to make a significant difference in crime statistics.
I’m not saying to quit looking at beautiful bathrooms and kitchens when considering a new home purchase. However, you do need to add good home security to your priority list to keep you and your family safer. New home builders are a by-product of supply on demand. If the trend is bathrooms and kitchens, then bathrooms and kitchens it is.
We need to put an emphasis on home security in order to receive it as standard equipment. If new home buyers start demanding higher standards in home security as “matter of fact” requests, then the industry’s priorities will have to change.
It always amazes me that new home buyers spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on the purchase of a new home, fill it full of their worldly possessions, and lock everything up with a $30.00 deadbolt and a 99 cent key.
The reason most people don’t think twice about it is because it has come to be accepted. We have accepted the $30.00 deadbolt and the 99 cent key as long as the kitchen has an island and the en suite has a soaker tub. D
Wall ClocksDigital technology may have already progressed exponentially, but most of us still have a rather strange attraction to analog wall clocks. Who can blame us? These grand timepieces symbolize a period in human history when craftsmanship was much more important than technology.
History of wall clocks
The modern-day wall clocks we have today come from a long line of crude clocks.
The Sundial. The earliest clock instrument used for telling time was the sundial. The sundial tells the time of the day based on the shadows that the sun’s rays cast on the marked surfaces. In its crudest form, the sundial is made up of poles or sticks set on the ground. Most wall clocks are still hinged on the sundial’s look - in fact, some wall clocks are purposely designed to look like old sundials.
Wall clocks with brass dials. These were perhaps the earliest wall clocks made for mass use. But back then, these timepieces were very expensive. It took craftsmen several months to finish one. Only the nobility were able to display these brass dials in their mansions and palaces.
Start of the painted dials. Britain was first to revamp the traditional brass dials and introduce the modern clock dials we have today. Painted dials soon grew in popularity and were produced for the use of the masses. During this era, wall clocks started to be used not only for timekeeping but also as decorative and commemorative pieces. British capitalists started to use them to mark and celebrate various religious and cultural events and even famous sports and war victories.
Modern wall clocks. Most modern wall clocks are now mass-produced and made of cheaper materials such as plastic and metal. Technology enables manufacturers to fabricate wall clocks quickly without sacrificing quality. These pieces are now available for as little as $10.
There are still, however, specially made clocks that are loyal to original craftsmanship and design. These types still cost hundreds to thousands of dollars, but many people invest in them for decorative purposes - and their decision makes sense. Wall clocks are, after all, still cheaper than paintings but add just the same character and elegance to any wall.

A DIY Guide for Vacuum Cleaner RepairIt always seems that your vacuum will malfunction right before company is set to arrive. What do you do if your vacuum is not working correctly? Many people will simply throw away their vacuum and purchase a new one. However, did you know that it is quite easy to repair a vacuum cleaner?
You can find a lot of great information by checking out the website of the manufacturer who made your vacuum. For instance, if you have a Hoover vacuum, you can learn specifically about Hoover parts and how they work.
In order to repair the problem, you first need to determine what is wrong with your vacuum cleaner.
There are actually not a lot of vacuum parts which malfunction. The most common problem is a belt malfunction. To check out the vacuum cleaner belt, you will want to flip the vacuum on its front so that the brush is facing you. You will notice a small plate around the brush. Unscrew this. Check the belt. It is possible that it has snapped or has wrapped itself around a portion of the brush. If it is broken, you will want to take the belt with you to a store to purchase a new one. Many stores carry vacuum cleaner parts, including stores like Walmart and Target. You should be able to identify the proper size belt and many times a package will contain several size belts making it easier to insure you have the right one. Vacuum cleaner belts are not expensive at all.
You also will want to check the vacuum agitator brush. Sometimes it can become tangled with hair, pieces of carpet or string. You should use a pair of scissors to cut all of that out. Once it is clean, you can simply replace the belt and screw the plate back on the front.
If your vacuum is having poor suction, you might have something blocking one of the hoses. Remove the hoses one at a time, consulting your owner’s manual if needed. If you have trouble reaching the blockage you can use the end of a mop or broomstick to push the obstruction through.
It also makes sense to do some routine maintenance on your vacuum. You will want to check the vacuum filter frequently to insure that it is not too dirty or blocked. The vacuum filter can affect the performanace of your machine. Also check the cord of your vacuum to make sure that it hasn’t become frayed. Vacuum cords can often become damaged when they are run over by the vacuum.
Most of the problems you have with your vacuum will be related to either the agitator brush, the belt, or a blockage. You can save yourself a lot of time and money if you do the repairs yourself. You will be surprised how easy it is.
Sometimes a vacuum has electrical problems and those are a lot more difficult to fix on your own. In that case it is probably better to take it to someone who knows how to repair vacuums or make the move to a new machine.
Next time you have vacuum trouble, try these simple tricks. They might just breathe new life back into your vacuum!

Balancing Style and Worth with Your Home Remodeling CostsThe classic way to increase the value of your house is spending some home remodeling costs for your existing rooms or additional floor plans. But since you’re spending, why not make the most of what you can get?
You have the choice whether to add new appliances, or cabinets or fixtures; or you can go way until only some few steps to the edge if you have enough home remodeling costs. What’s important though is for you to reach the most desirable look or use you want for your home. You can start by choosing the right space to remodel.
Home remodeling costs are proven more worth it if spent on new additions in locations that are in a completely different architectural style - the kitchen and the bathroom. This way you can always protect the character of the rest of your home by keeping it within the existing framework, while transferring added attraction instead to the kitchen or bath.
And you don’t really need to buy the most expensive materials for your new additions. You can keep your home remodeling costs within the budget of only simple repairs that are made to last - a practical and clean style so to speak. But of course you can always go for some simple luxuries. You can have your bathroom enlarged or take-in a sunken whirlpool, tub, modern showers, or extension spa or dressing rooms. Same thing for the kitchen - you can simply replace broken tiles or prop-up a charming breakfast nook, a new kitchen island, or place elegant granite countertops for more drama.
In contrast, the most financially unrewarding areas putting in more home remodeling costs are those directly above-ground areas such as the basement, garage, yard, or walkway (unless you’re turning them into a completely new space). Adding swimming pools should also re-considered over and over since its cost is high enough and which should even include maintenance outlay. It may all be worth it in the end but right now, consider the cost.
You can easily remodel just about any part of your house without placing too much on your overall home remodeling costs. Replacing worn carpeting, tiles, and wood floors will give you the immediate advantage you’re looking for. You can also just update the paint colors or add new wall coverings. Also bear in mind that there are many stylish and trendy items at discount prices found at garage sales and outlet stores. Who knows, you may even be fortunate to find a superb piece of cabinetry that fits perfectly well with your kitchen’s theme. In fact, you can even recycle your stuff out of its context and into a completely fresh function. Just keep in mind that the true effectiveness of a space comes from the harmonious balance of all of its components. You may not always stay simple but be consistent. Then, even the smallest and cheapest changes in your home can make a world of difference.

Bedroom ColorsA touch of color can transform the most subtle, plain looking bedroom into a cozy, pleasing to the eye room.Colors on the walls and in the carpet can be carried through with accessories like plants, throws, and chairs.
Colors on the walls and in the carpet can be carried through with accessories like plants, throws, and chairs.
For a feeling of peace and calmness, the walls, ceiling and carpet should be pale, pastel colors complimented with brighter colors with dark trim for curtains and upholstery.
To make a room appear cooler, neutral shades can be used. Neutral colors can add to the freshness and lightness of the room as well. A soft and feminine feeling can be achieved by using soft colored fabrics for the walls. Throw pillows of the same color can be added for a greater effect. The use of striking fruit and flower patterns on the walls and ceiling can give a bedroom a “garden-like” feeling and carpet, throws and window dressing colors can enhance the creative design. For a more conservative look, cool colors with clean lines can be used and colored tiles can be used for flooring.
Sharply contrasting colors are used to echo or delineate the shape of a room. For maximum coolness the walls and ceilings should be left plain. Color should be used in a subtle manner, thereby giving an overall calm and relaxing effect.
In order to soften the edges of a bedroom and to distract the eye from the ceiling, soft cloth can be hung on the walls, and floors and ceilings should be pale to match the pockets of color on bed coverings, plants and baskets. Red and white when used in different proportions, gives a cheerful and fresh look to a bedroom.
If you are on a tight budget, the best solution is to use white on white to create a maximum effect. The monotony can be broken by adding foliage. Boldly colored wall paper can be used for the walls and repeated in the curtains — creating a warm and luxurious effect. To give a stark colored room a feeling of intimacy, pastel colored blinds can be used. Subtle wall paints will also provide a background that is subtle. Plain lines with fine floral designs will add a feeling of freshness to the walls. If a plain carpet is used in the same room, a sense of space is maintained.
A child’s bedroom can be decorated creatively with vivid colors and designs. Furniture can also be brightly colored in a variety of shapes and designs. Themes like “Barbie” for girls and “Spiderman” for boys are very popular.

The Garden Gnome; A Culture All It’s OwnThe Garden Gnome is not just another yard figurine. It has it’s own distinguished history, culture and controversy attached to it. Before you buy a Garden Gnome for your home be sure to know all of the factors that go along with it.
For starters the history of the Garden Gnome dates back to Germany in the 1800’s. The original statues were made out of clay and were hand crafted. They then made their way to England in the mid 1800s. Around the late 1800’s to the 1900’s they made their way into America. During WWII production of these figurines came to an abrupt halt. The German factories were commandeered and converted to support the war efforts. In 1960’s the gnomes picked up popularity again however, they were mass-produced using plastic. Because so many of them were produced they gained the stigma for being a tacky lawn ornament. The clay hand carved Garden Gnomes have been family heirlooms for many families. The Clay figurines are making a come back of sorts, more companies are reviving the old tradition.
Any Garden Gnome enthusiast will tell you that Garden Gnomes are wonderful creatures that are very good luck to have in your garden. They are primarily vegetarians, joyful little people who enjoy having fun and helping out with things. It is believed that having one in your garden will be helpful in the day-to-day activities that are necessary to proper garden management. It is believed that they have an excellent ability to be able to reflect on history and an even better perspective on the future.
Not all people have such a jovial perception of the Garden Gnome. There are some that disagree with the use of the Garden Gnome. They believe that to have a Garden Gnome in the home is slavery and that the Garden Gnome should be freed. There are groups that will take a Garden Gnome from a yard if they see it. Relocating it to the forest where they believe they find their freedom. A few of the groups choose to operate under the raidar, sneaking into people’s yards and stealing these figurines. There is a political group that actively lobbies for the ban of Garden Gnome slavery.
Whether you are a follower of the Garden Gnome culture or just someone who thinks they are cut enough to go in your yard these figurines have a lot of history behind them and can be a wonderful addition to your yard. Just be sure to keep them away from the gnome liberators if you would like to keep them for a long period of time.
