Choosing Bedroom Curtains

November 30, 2011 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Bedroom curtains are important in a bedroom. You will want to be able to control the lighting that comes through your windows in your bedroom, as well as keep anyone from seeing in your private and personal space. There are some other things that you will want to take into consideration as well, when you are choosing the perfect curtains for your bedroom. Maybe you are redecorating your bedroom, and you want to change the look completely? If this is the case, you will need to choose your curtains that will go into your bedroom before you choose anything else. This is because you can always match and decorate around the curtains that you choose, and use that as a starting point in your redecorating project.

When you are looking for bedroom curtains, be sure that you take into consideration the style and color of the curtains that you are wanting to hang. This is important, and you will want your bedroom to be pleasing to the eye, as well as comfortable. Make sure that you decide which design style you are going with, before you head out the door to go shopping for curtains. Knowing in advance which direction you are leaning towards on design, will help you immensely when you get to the store to pick and choose. This will also make the shopping easier, as you will know if you are looking for dramatic curtains for your bedroom, or simple straight panels that will do the job they are hung there to do.

After you have decided on the design style you are going with for your bedroom curtains, you will be ready to decide on the color. You will want the curtains to stand out and pop from the wall, so that it is obvious that there is a window there underneath them. However, you will also want to take into consideration the other colors that you want to put into the bedroom as well. You want everything to tie together in the end, and be a space that is relaxing and somewhere that you want to be. With that in mind, think about the colors that relax you. While it is proven that colors will effect different people in different ways, you want to be sure that you choose a relaxing color that will help you fall asleep.

Once you have chosen the design and color of the curtains, you need to take into consideration how much light you want coming through your bedroom curtains. If you work graveyard shift, you might need to sleep in your bedroom during the day. If you the light bothers you while you are trying to sleep during the day, you will want a cortina for your bedroom that will allow you to block out the light when you are needing to sleep, and sun is shining outside. This will make your bedroom more comfortable for you to sleep in, and you will enjoy your space so much more, when it works for you.

Furniture Casters

November 29, 2011 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Furniture casters may come in different materials and sizes, but you need not be confused when choosing them if you know your requirements. Here is a quick rundown of all the things you should consider when choosing and buying furniture casters.

Casters, in terms of wheels, can be grouped into three types: there are single wheel, dual wheel, and ball wheel. Each kind has its specific advantages and disadvantages.

You should use single-wheel casters if your furniture is lightweight and it can be rolled easily by a two- to three-inch caster made of light but sturdy materials. Single-wheel casters are made of either rubber urethane, neoprene, or other similar substances. If the furniture you want to put a caster on is heavier, then a dual-wheel caster might be better for you. Dual-wheel casters have a larger capacity because they can spread out the weight of the furniture between their two wheels. If you need the furniture to be more mobile and easily pushed in all directions, on the other hand, then a ball caster may be best. The structure of the ball wheels allows free movement. Like the single- and dual-wheel casters, they come in different sizes and capacity limits.

You should use different caster materials on different kinds of flooring because using the wrong kind can ruin both your floor and your furniture. As a general rule, use casters with plastic wheels only on carpeted surfaces. Hardwood, concrete, and tile floors require sturdier casters such as those made of urethane tread. Urethane tread is very popular for running smoothly and not making marks on delicate flooring. Unless you are buying casters for warehouse or factory usage, stay away from iron caster wheels. While they are very high-capacity casters, they are more likely to set off floor deterioration very quickly.

Watering Your Garden - How to Make Each Drop Count

November 28, 2011 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Water-wise gardening or xeriscaping - the practice of gardening in dry conditions - is becoming much more important to gardeners, especially those in dry areas.

If you have sandy soil, steep slopes where water runs off quickly, a country garden you visit only on weekends, high water bills or watering restrictions during the growing season, read on to find out how to save money, use water resources more responsibly and stop lugging all those hoses around unnecessarily.

Ten ways to make each drop count

  1. Group especially thirsty plants together, so you can water them without having to do the entire garden; take advantage of low moist spots for such plants.

  2. Investigate drought-tolerant plants - they often have taproots, or grey, fuzzy, waxy or finely divided leaves.

  3. Avoid frequent, shallow waterings; water needs to penetrate about four inches into soil for it to do any good.

  4. Encourage plants to develop extensive root systems by infrequent, but deep, generous watering - about one inch of water every week if rainfall is inadequate (buy a rain gauge to measure precipitation, so you don’t water unnecessarily).

  5. Mulch bare soil to a depth of two to four inches to prevent evaporation and maintain soil moisture; use organic materials such as shredded wood or bark, straw, shredded leaves, compost or cocoa bean hulls; (inorganic mulch such as gravel or stone chips also retains moisture, but won’t break down to help improve soil).

  6. Don’t water between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. when hot sun evaporates a lot of water.

  7. Water plants at soil level to get moisture straight to roots, rather than on leaves.

  8. Use soaker hoses or drip irrigation, rather than sprinklers (much of the water thrown into the air by sprinklers evaporates); these systems also avoid wasting water on walkways, patios and driveways.

  9. Install a barrel to collect rainwater from roof; a modest rain of one quarter of an inch on a 1000 ft square roof yields 150 gallons; rain barrels come with a shut-off valve and hose connection so you can fill your watering can for hand-watering.

  10. During drought, water large trees by allowing your hose to dribble a small amount of water around the drip-line for several hours to ensure that water is absorbed instead running off quickly. Newly planted trees need supplemental water for the first two seasons, especially in hot, dry summers.

Save Space With Futons

November 27, 2011 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Futon is a thin mattress stuffed with cotton batting or similar material and raised on a foldable frame. Futon also refers to a small couch that turns into a bed when it has been unfolded. Futon in Japanese means a mattress and are sold in Futon-Ya stores in Japan.

Traditional Japanese Futons

A Japanese futon set consists of Shikibuton, Kakebuton, Mofu and Makura. Shikibuton is a type of mattress, Kakebuton is a type of comforter, Mofu refers to a blanket and Makura is the pillow.

Futons are created from individual woven straw mats of uniform size, bordered by plain cloth and packed with straw. In Japan futons are used on tatami floors. Japanese futons can be folded and are kept in closet during day time. This is done so that the tatami floor can breathe.

Futons act as a sofa during the day and can be converted into a sleeping bed at night. Basically the futon is used to save space. The futon sofa has cushions that are usually stuffed with cotton batting and can be found in a variety of colors, sizes and fabrics. Futons are used for sleeping and sitting and futons provide a good back support. In Japan futons are usually taken out in the sunlight and occasionally beaten with a stick to take out the dust.

Western Futons

Futons became available in the west in the early 70s. People became interested in futons because they were inexpensive and saved considerable space. In the beginning most of the futon sofa users were students, first time homeowners and apartment dwellers. After the 1970s futons became very popular in America. Today the futons come in luxuriant colors and fabrics, from rich brocades to lush tapestries.

The western futons are thicker and larger than the Japanese traditional futons. These futons resemble the conventional furniture which are filled with foam and batting in number of layers. In a reverse trend, western style futons have gained popularity in Japan because they are cheaper and more convenient than the traditional Japanese futon.
Western futons have strong frames and are usually made of strong dense wood which can withstand stress. There are three types of frames available in western style futons, bifold, trifold and loveseat.

Bifold can be folded in half and is the best for couches. It is also good for every day conversion from bed to couch. Trifold folds into three folds and they are provided for long futons. The loveseat futon is fairly popular and is very useful in small spaces. The loveseat frame comes into two parts couch and ottoman.

Bedroom Benches

November 26, 2011 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Due to the different ways people use their bedrooms, it is safe to say that though the bed may be the salient feature in every bedroom, other pieces of furniture have been paving their way to conform to homeowners’ needs for style and purpose. Armoires, nightstands, television stands, chairs and benches may now share the spotlight with the bed, which used to be the bedroom’s most focal point.

Bedroom benches have amassed such popularity due to their sheer versatility. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes to fit the homeowner’s taste. Different staining and painting techniques may be used to achieve the look you’re after. They may or may not be upholstered to match your existing bedroom design theme. Their versatility in terms of usage has provided homeowners style ideas that have been utilized through the years. Though decorative, they also offer countless uses.

Bedroom benches may be used as its intended purpose - a chair - while dressing or reading or extra seating when you have guests in the bedroom. You may also use them to lay your clothes on either for the next day or while arranging clothes in your closet. You may use it as a footstool where you can raise you feet up after a busy day. Because it is easy to move around, bedroom benches may be used when you need extra height in reaching for things atop armoires or cabinets. It is also perfect to put extra blankets on during chilly nights.

When placed at the foot of the bed, it provides extra coverage, ideal when in masking large unused bedroom floor space. Yet bedroom benches are no longer confined to the foot of the bed. Homeowners now situate bedroom benches wherever they deem them necessary. Bedroom benches are put in spaces that need compact yet luxurious seating.

Tips For Wary Log Furniture Buyers

November 25, 2011 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Choosing a log furniture dealer can often be a difficult task. Log furniture is a niche market and not as readily available as conventional furniture. This poses a bit of a dilemma. The discerning shopper has to either drive quite a distance to visit a showroom or be at the mercy of a company with a website and hope the information they give you is accurate and honest. Ordering furniture sight unseen can be a very apprehensive experience to say the least - that is unless you know what to look for. How can you know the company you want to do business with is going to give you good service? We have some valuable tips for avoiding an internet shopper’s nightmare.

First of all find out how long a company has been in business. Nowadays, a website can be thrown up in a day. All businesses go through a learning curve until they “get it right”. It is you who they will be learning on - mistakes and all! The easy way to check out a business is to go to Dunn & Bradstreet at http://www.dnb.com/us/ and look up the company. You will find valuable information about how long they have been in business, how many employees they have, etc.

Another way to check out a company is to contact the Better Business Bureau and see if they are a member. The Better Business Bureau keeps records of customer grievances with the company and makes this information available to the public. Participating companies may have a link on their website for you to click on. They can also be found at http://www.bbb.org/.

A plus when deciding on which business will win your favor is to make sure the business has a real live storefront. As mentioned before, anyone can put up a website. Someone with a real brick and mortar store is in there for the long haul. A physical address is important and one should be wary of a business without one. Drop shipping is common and many people run businesses without ever seeing or touching the merchandise, which means less quality control.

Always, always, always, check to make sure that the site is secure when ordering online. An easy way to tell is to look for the little yellow padlock in the lower right corner of the page when you proceed to check out. This will minimize the possibility of digital theft of your personal information. There are various companies who offer secure certificates such as Thawte and VeriSign. These companies will have logos present on the website and allow you to verify its authenticity by just clicking on the logo.

Any good log furniture dealer will offer some kind of warranty on the products they sell. The length and terms will vary but it should be spelled out plainly. You do not want to find out that when your furniture shows up at your door defective, it’s too bad, so sad; it’s your problem. We have been known to replace parts the customer broke 2 years after the purchase just to go the extra mile and offer good service.

Lastly are testimonials. The best recommendation is a good testimonial. We use ones that customers have sent in to us and are genuine. But let’s face it; anyone can write anything they want and how are you going to prove whether they are real or made up? The only way around this one it if the company will provide you with names and contact information and hope it isn’t a close friend, or family member willing to say everything you want to hear. Be careful when weighing testimonials.

There are good log furniture dealers out there and careful examination will offer great rewards to the observant buyer.

Western Decorating Ideas For Your Kitchen

November 23, 2011 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

If you are into the Western decorating theme, you can have a lot of fun using it to decorate your kitchen. In fact, you can take one element of the theme and go crazy with it. For instance, one Western decorating idea is to focus on a Western object like some cowboy boots or a cowboy hat. You can even combine elements and use both of them as your central decorating theme.

You can find all types of decor in the Western decorating theme. Try looking for cookie jars or other ceramics that you can sit out on your counter for an interesting effect. Also look for western themed curtains and light switch covers. One fun way to spend a Saturday afternoon is to scour the local antique shops for Western themed decor. You’ll be surprised at the interesting items you can find! You can use browns, red, navy, or cream to pull in the Americana theme to the mix as well.

One great way to pull off the theme is to also look for accents made of unfinished wood. You can often find tables and chairs that actually look like they were made with unfinished logs. These are perfect for a Western decorated kitchen. In addition, you can use photo frames that look unfinished and put pictures of your family or of western mountains and hills in them. You can also find many items made from tree branches or logs as well as items made from deer antlers and items covered in cow hide (either faux or real!)

Another great thing to use is copper or black iron accents. You can get away with either of these. If you have a pot hanger over your kitchen island, you should try mixing both copper pieces and cast iron pieces. In addition, you can even use cast iron skillets or pans as wall decor and hang them accordingly. And don’t forget pot holders, tablecloths and dish towels made with Western theme fabrics.

Try your own Western decorating ideas in your kitchen to see exactly what works for you and what doesn’t. The Western theme is perfect if you love to constantly feel like you are the “Wild West” or in a log cabin. It can look great in any home if you are consistent with the decor. Using Western style accents on the counters, window treatments, floors and walls will help pull the look together and make you feel like you are rustling up grub for your cowhands on a Western ranch even if you are living in a modern city home!

Hardwood Furniture

November 22, 2011 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Hardwoods are not utilized for flooring purposes alone. They are also widely used for furniture. Hardwood furniture is remarkably sturdy and has been serving many households for many generations. Its quality has always been outstanding, but its main drawback, however, lies in the fact that furniture gets easily stained, scratched, and nicked even from just a very minor accident. While hardwood furniture is classically elegant, when it suffers damage that has not been addressed properly it will soon acquire an old and ugly look, resulting from the quick fading of its polished finish.

Taking care of your hardwood furniture should start by keeping the room in which it is situated at the proper temperature. Although furniture is designed to acclimate to the humidity level inside your house, it cannot properly adjust to continually changing moisture that will shrink and expand the hardwood elements. You can avoid this, however, by using a humidifier during the winter season and air conditioner during the summer. This way, the moisture is retained, keeping the furniture always in its best condition.

Simple preventive maintenance will protect and enhance the natural beauty of the hardwood furniture. Follow the care directions in the manufacturer’s manual that came with the furniture upon purchase. Dusting the furniture with a moistened cloth lightly after spraying with a furniture spray product will remove the accumulation of abrasive particles. You can also substitute it with water and mild non-alkaline soap mixture using a damp sponge or cloth. Make sure to dry it immediately and buff lightly. Regular practice of these simple methods will maintain the furniture’s high-performance finishes and will prevent them from acquiring unsightly marks.

If the furniture is spotted with dirt stain, it can be tough to remove it. There are different products of do-it-yourself furniture first aid in the market but if you’re not at all sure to do it effectively, it is best to call a professional refinisher.

Hardwood furniture is constructed for everybody to use and enjoy it. But if is not properly cared for and maintained, its purpose is defeated. However, if you have been giving it proper treatment, it will last not only last through a lifetime but will be enjoyed by generation after generation.

Gardening - Lawn Maintenance Chores Part V

November 21, 2011 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

In this next in our series of articles on lawn maintenance we’re going to continue with chores that should be done around late July or early August.

If you’re planning on renovating your lawn, the end of July or beginning of August is probably your best time. By now the grass should be de-thatched and aerated. Get a de-thatching machine which you can rent for half a day. Your lawn will look like garbage after you’re done but, it will clear off old grass and will prickle the soil. After you do this you can seed, apply topsoil and peat moss, and then water your lawn, a lot. Every day for about a week should do it.

You can continue to re-seed until the third week in September but no later than that unless it is absolutely necessary. There are some lawn experts that will tell you that you can do this all the way up to just before the winter begins. Supposedly if you do this it will sit there over the entire winter and will help germinate the soil as the weather warms up.

If you are using a seed mix that has a high proportion of blue grass, seeding too late will make it so that germination may not take place until mid October, which is not beneficial to young grass as it would be an easy target for frost kill.

In September is the time to give your lawn its last feeding. If you haven’t been doing this up to now, get a slow release fertilizer for this last application. If you’re wondering why this is important, imagine what would happen if you didn’t winterize your car by getting new anti freeze. Most likely you’d end up with a cracked radiator. Grass is no different. If you give your lawn a little nutritional lift at this time it will stand a better chance of surviving the winter that’s ahead of it. So even though this last feeding may be costly it will be more than worth it in the long run.

In October, as the weather is getting cooler, you can lower your mower blades. Around October, since the grass isn’t going to be growing as much or as quickly, you can lower the blades to about an inch or inch and a half. One thing you should be aware of. If your lawn has a very bumpy surface, dropping the blades may create some bald patches. So when you set the blade height you have to take the surface of the lawn into consideration. Of course, if your lawn is very bumpy, you may want to think about adding some topsoil to it. This will help create a more even surface.

In November, after the leaves have fallen, rake the grass and clean up any debris. Do one last mowing before the first frost. This kills two birds with one stone. You get the grass ready for winter and clean up your lawn at the same time.
