Spring is Around the Corner - How is Your Garden

October 21, 2011 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Spring is in my opinion the most wonderful time of year for the gardener. You can shake of that winter weariness and get ready for a new gardening season.

The most difficult part of spring gardening is trying to manage your impatience. Don’t start digging around too early. The soil must be dry enough to have it fall apart when you pick it up. When it still sticks together like glue that’s definitely not the case.

Early spring is the best time of year to change (parts of) your garden design. You can transplant existing shrubs and perennial plants before they begin to leaf out. This also is the time to prune your trees and shrubs. Cut back the remaining dead foliage from last season and remove dead, damaged or diseased branches of trees and shrubs.

And then flowers! That’s really what spring is about isn’t it! There are many that are suitable for cool spring weather. Think of sweet alyssum, some snapdragons, stock and sweat peas. You can also start some perennials like hostas and daylilies.

Start some Violets, Marigolds, Carnations, Geraniums and Impatiens inside to transplant to your flower beds in early spring. Or if you have some space left in your garden you can set up a “Cold Frame”. Ready-made cold frames are available in different sizes. A cold frame “captures” the spring sunlight and warms the soil it surrounds. That way it is ideal to “harden off” houseplants and transplants for your summer garden. You can use the cold frame for direct seeding as well.

If you have unplanted areas in your garden a great spring project is to lay out landscape cloth on that unplanted area. Landscape cloth is an excellent weed barrier. It comes in different weights, heights and fabric choices. This cloth can then also serve as a great map to precisely plant your transplants.

Weeds start to grow very early but still have shallow roots in spring so get them out when you spot them. Getting on top of the weeds now means a lot less work in summer, and I’m sure that digging out weeds in the burning sun in not your favorite pastime.

These two measures will definitely intimidate your perennial weeds to the extent that they will prefer your neighbor’s garden over yours.

And most of all enjoy your spring garden, watch it grow and blossom into summer!

Hanging & Dressing CurtainsBlinds

October 20, 2011 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

If a professional has made your curtains and they are hanging them up, you should be able to leave the dressing of your curtains to them. If, they are not providing this service do not despair, you will be able to achieve the look you desire from your window dressings if you follow these suggestions.

Ensure that the track or pole has been fitted. (See our article section on measuring up for curtains). Make sure that they any track or pole is fitted level.

Press the curtains with a dry iron bearing in mind the fabric composition.

If the curtains are made with a tape heading, holding the tape firmly in one hand, to gather up the fabric as tightly as possible. You may find it helpful to wrap the cords several times around a door handle and then gather up the cords.

Space out you curtain hooks, clips or rings approximately every 4 inches / 10cm apart. Make sure you have enough rings, clips or hooks on the track or pole. This will help the curtains from drooping once they are up.

Hang the curtains up.

Cut several pieces of muslin/ fabric. These will be used to tie around the pleats once they are in place.

Draw the curtains back into the stack position. Starting at the outside edge and at the top, guide and arrange the pleats into soft folds ensuring that any linings and interlinings attached to the curtain are incorporated with each fold.

Once you are happy with the pleats, tie a piece of muslin/ fabric around the pleated curtains. You need to do this at intervals from the top to the bottom of the curtains. Two or three may be required depending upon the length of the curtains and the weight. Make sure that you do not tie up the curtains too tightly as wrinkles will occur.

Leave the curtain to set in this position for a few days.

Once the setting process is completed, make the position of the tie back. This is usually two thirds of the way down the curtain with the hook in the wall between 4- 6 inches/ 10 and 15 cms from the outside edge. However you may wish to position your tie backs higher or lower that these parameters.

Dressing Blinds

Just as curtains, blinds need a little encouragement in order to naturally fall into the right position. If they have been made professionally then blinds will come ready to hang.

Once the blind is fitted, according to the fitting instructions, pull the blind up and leave in the desired position for a few days so that the folds set.

These tips are useful for blinds such as Roman Blinds and Austrian Blinds. If you have chosen a London Blind, then once the blind has been pulled up, it is best left in that position.

Time taken over the dressing of either curtains or blinds will enhance the final finish.

My love for interiors and the things that go to make up home began as a child. I assisted my father as a workmate as he worked on many jobs around the home. My mother had a love of sewing and I learnt what I could from her.

After completing my studies, I started my own soft furnishing business 15 years ago. Many clients would ask for help and assistance with their interior designing. Seeing the need to provide this service, I studied both interior design and soft furnishings so that I could provide for the needs of my clients.

Save Time & Money Doing Your Own Basic Electric Wiring

October 19, 2011 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Hiring a professional electrician can be very expensive and is often the reason why people try doing their own basic electric wiring themselves.

I have seen the good, the bad and the ugly results of these efforts and I have come to the conclusion that basic electrical wiring is not something anyone should do without proper guidance, tools and confidence.

It is so important that before attempting any of these basic electrical wiring projects that people are aware of how dangerous electricity is and how important safety is for you and for your family and family home.

90 percent of the time I recommend hiring a licensed electrician over doing your basic electrical wiring yourself. Not doing this will usually end up costing even more money than before and increase the risk of bringing your family into danger without even knowing your doing it.

But doing your own basic electric wiring really isn’t that hard to do if you “educate” yourself on the topic.

Licensed electricians had to learn the stuff themselves too. So as a ‘do it yourself person’ this isn’t different. There is no escape possible.

You will see that the more you read about it the easier it will become and the more confidence you will get.

Just to give you an idea, here are 3 questions I recently got from people just like you who tried doing their own electric wiring:

Question 1: I installed a grounding probe in your aquarium and every time anyone in the house turns on or off the lights, the fish jump. What’s going on?

A couple of suggestions:

1. (easiest) Pull out that grounding probe and return it from whence you purchased it.

2. Check the wiring on your outlet. You may actually have ‘Neutral’ instead of ‘Ground’.

3. Check the wiring throughout the rest of the house. There are some people out there that insist on doing their own home repairs, yet don’t understand basic electrical wiring.

Outlets are easy to check by getting a $7.95 outlet tester from the hardware store. Wired-in appliances, lights, heaters, etc. are tougher.

4. Check all your electrical fixtures to make sure they aren’t leaking some voltage to Ground.

Question 2: What is the NEC? Where can I get a copy?

The NEC is a model electrical code devised and published by the National Fire Protection Association, an insurance industry group. It’s revised every three years.

The 1993 version has been released. You can buy a copy at a decent bookstore, or by calling them directly at 800-344-3555.

The code exists in several versions. There’s the full text, which is fairly incomprehensible. There’s an abridged edition, which has only the sections likely to apply to most houses.

And there’s the NEC Handbook, which contains the “authorized commentary” on the code, as well as the full text. That’s the recommended version. Unfortunately, there’s no handbook for the abridged edition. And the full handbook is expensive — US$65 plus shipping and handling.

Question 3: Can I do my own wiring? Extra pointers?

In most places, homeowners are allowed to do their own wiring. In some, they’re not. Check with your local electrical inspector. Most places won’t permit you to do wiring on other’s homes for money without a license. Nor are you permitted to do wiring in “commercial” buildings.

Multiple dwellings (eg: duplexes)are usually considered “semi-commercial” or “commercial”. However, many jurisdictions will permit you to work on semi-commercial wiring if you’re supervised by a licensed electrician - if you can find one willing to supervise.

If you do your own wiring, an important point:

Do it NEAT and WELL! What you really want to aim for is a better job than an electrician will do. After all, it’s your own home, and it’s you or your family that might get killed if you make a mistake.

An electrician has time pressures, has the skills and knows the tricks of the trade to do a fast, safe job. In this FAQ we’ve consciously given a few recommendations that are in excess of code, because we feel that it’s reasonable, and will impress the inspector.

The inspector will know that you’re an amateur. You have to earn his trust. The best way of doing this is to spend your time doing as neat a job as possible. Don’t cut corners. Exceed specifications. Otherwise, the inspector may get extremely picky and fault you on the slightest transgressions.

Don’t try to hide anything from the inspector.

Use the proper tools. Ie: don’t use a bread knife to strip wires, or twist wires with your fingers. The inspector won’t like it, and the results won’t be that safe. And it takes longer. And you’re more likely to stick a hunk of 12ga wire through your hand that way.

Don’t handle house wire when it’s very cold (eg: below -10C or 16F). Thermoplastic house wire, particularly older types become very brittle.

As you can see, getting the right answers to your questions can make the work a lot easier.

You save time by doing it “the right way” from the first time and you save money because you won’t need to hire an electrician to either do the entire job or to fix your screw-ups.

In any case, no matter what you, be very careful when working on electricity! If needed cut down the entire power of your house just to be sure.

Keep It Safe,

Making Small Bathrooms Seem Larger

October 18, 2011 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

When people think about remodeling a room, bathroom remodeling is often last on the list. We use our bathrooms all the time, of course, and so this is a little strange that it often gets left out of the make-over plan. One reason for this may be that bathrooms tend to be smaller than other rooms, and so even though they get used and even abused more than other rooms, they often get left behind.

Even though bathrooms are smaller than other rooms, there are still countless things you can do with them. In fact, because there are so many different elements involved in even the smallest of bathrooms, they are often one of the most interesting (and most challenging) rooms you could choose to redecorate. If you have the challenge of a small bathroom, one of the first things you’re probably going to want to do is make it seem larger.

Because we do spend so much time in our bathrooms, the quality of this space can affect how we view the quality of our homes overall. A nice, clean, large bathroom can improve the quality of your life. The problem, of course, is that some of us don’t have nice, large bathrooms to play with. Not to worry. Below are some tips for making any bathroom seem larger.

As was mentioned earlier, even a tiny bathroom has loads of things to play with, redecorate, move around, or simply get rid of. There are bathroom vanities and tubs and showers and lighting and tile and mirrors and sinks and storage spaces and on and on and on. There are also a multitude of accessories that can be found in any bathroom, even accessories that you may not even consider as an accessory, things such as bathrobes hanging on the back of a door, towels hanging on towel racks, and even little washcloths. All of these things are “exposed,” if you will, and so whether you want them to or not, they go into making up the overall design of your bathroom. The good news is that once you start thinking of them in this way, they give you more elements to play with in your design.

Although older homes have lots of character and lots of advantages, one of the biggest curses of an older home is usually, of course, a small bathroom. If you don’t have the time or finances to rip out walls and simply make the place bigger, there’s still hope. Even a little bit of color can help change the perception of a bathroom’s size.

One general rule about color and size perception is to stay away from very bold colors and very dark colors. A very bold or dark color is going to make any room seem smaller that it is.

However, a few splashes of color in a room that is overall light and soft can go a long way in brightening it up. Therefore, in general, a good idea for a small bathroom is to use neutral colors for the walls, and then liven it up with carefully chosen bright accessories - a nice, flashy shower curtain, or a few bold, bright towels. A relatively light-colored floor is also usually a good idea if you’re looking to enlarge the feel of your room.

Another thing to always consider, especially for a small room, and even more so for a bathroom, is lighting. Because bathrooms are built for privacy, this often translates into rooms with few windows and little natural light. There are exceptions, of course, but it usually takes a lot of forethought to get the proper balance between natural light and privacy, and unless you’re living in a modern, extremely well-designed home, you’re probably going to find that your bathroom doesn’t live up to that idea. Fortunately, of course, you can simply add more lighting to your room by putting in extra fixture. Some could increase the lighting in their bathrooms dramatically by making sure they’re using the highest watt bulb possible. That seems like a no-brainer, but many simply don’t think about it.

Another element of your bathroom that can cause smaller spaces to seem even smaller is the size of your fixtures. Of course we want comfort, but if your toilet and your vanity are hulking pieces that dominate the room, then you’re going to feel cramped every time you go in there. Some changes, while they may seem major, are not that big of a deal once you commit to them. One idea is to change out a large, cabinet style vanity for a pedestal sink. A pedestal sink will immediately slim down the whole sink area, and as a result, open up the whole room.

Of course, if you switch to a pedestal sink, you will need to then find extra storage space somewhere else, but there’s a good solution to that too - metal racks. Metal racks make great storage areas, and they have the advantage of feeling open, airy, and light. In addition, because the materials stored on them are open to public viewing, you can use their colors and shapes to add character to the room.

The last tip for making a small bathroom seem smaller is an old one - mirrors. Mirror have been used in this way for as long as they’ve been around, and they will always be used in this way for one simple reason - they work. Use more mirrors in your bathroom. You don’t have to limit yourself the one, simple mirror above the sink. Get creative. Use them as decoration. Use them in places that you won’t even be able to see yourself in. Once you’ve added a few mirrors around the room, every other element will be able to reflect it’s uniqueness over and over again.

Quick Lawn Care Tips For Achieving the Perfect Lawn

October 16, 2011 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

If you’ve ever wanted to improve the look of you lawn there are a few things you can do to maintain your lawn on a weekly basis without doing any major work often required to recover a damaged lawn.

Lawn Fertilizer- Lawns need their Spring feed most of all, especially one containing nitrogen, backed up with both phosphates and potash. One feed per annum is not enough, and a Summer feed, if the lawn is looking a little jaded should contain either a proprietary lawn tonic, or nitrogen rich fertilize. An autumn lawn care feed should concentrate more on phosphates and potash rather than nitrogen, possibly combined with a worm killer and disease preventive.

Watering Your Lawn - Rainfall in the is normally sufficient to keep the roots supplied with moisture, but dry spells do occur in late spring and summer months. The first sign of drought will be colour change, from green to straw or even brown. It is advisable to water at the coolest time of day, early or late, and best with a rotary sprinkler. A good watering once a week for optimum lawn care is preferable to over watering, unless it is extremely hot. In this way deep root development will be encouraged.

Weed Control - This is really down to good lawn care management. With an established lawn, laid with good quality seed or turf, the rules for maintaining it include the following. Appropriate mowing, at the correct height and little and often, and proper watering especially at the hint of a dry spell. Scarifying helps to control weeds and invigorates lawn growth, as does proper feeding. Good fertility combats the growth of weeds and builds the strength of the grass. Worm casts invite weed seeds, worm control is necessary, and prevention of disease in bare patches.

Mowing Your Lawn - Mowing keeps the lawn looking attractive. It should he done regularly, from March to October, with sharp blades, set not too low. It is better to mow when the grass is dry, to reduce mower clogging. The mower should be moved in a constant direction at a steady pace, and not hoovered backwards and forwards. When newly sown grass reaches 2″ or 3″ inches high, the top 2″ can be mowed with care.

Advice for new lawn care.

Establishment lawn care - Whether starting entirely from scratch, or renovating and old, tired lawn, the following is the best way to proceed. Seeding - for a lawn to be created from a bare, grassless mud patch, it is easier to get professional help with the levelling, via a tractor and box blade. A smooth clear surface is essential, with no holes, dips, or drainage problems.

Seed is best applied with a rotary type spreader. Half the seed should be spread in one direction, the remainder in the opposite direction. This gives good soil contact for the seed, and uniform germination. The type of grasses to be grown are dictated by climate, and are best planted 30 days before real warmth or chill sets in. Only hot season grasses should be sown when the temperature reaches 80 to 90 degrees. Hot season seed is very small and can be spread lightly, whereas cold climate seed is larger and requires heavier coverage for good thick grass.

There are various lawn care machines that can be rented for a day or two to power seed a lawn. The seed is dropped into ready made grooves as the machine moves over the ground. Again, a level surface is essential, and power seeders are not recommended where it is rough or uneven.

A further solution is to Hydroseed. Under this process the seed is mixed with fertilizer and a lawn care mulch plus water, and sprayed on to the lawn. This encourages quicker germination. The spray is coloured blue or green for identifying the sprayed area, and later turns white. The machine will usually have to be hired rather than rented. A lawn can also be renovated easily with a lawn care dethatcher, which scarifys the surface, and aids germination of scattered seeds. This machine needs using with care in respect of the lawn surface.

Preparing the Seed Bed.

For New Lawn care - Rake and smooth, remove any debris. Renovating Established Lawns - Mow closely. To overseed or repair bare spots, rake to produce a viable surface, then check section on ‘fertilizing’. Kill off remaining seed with Finale. Vegetation will brown within 7-10 days. A good raking will remove loosened thatch and expose soil for seed. Bare spots can be chopped into small chunks to allow use of the slit seeder in a grid formation. Slits should run in a horizontal fashion across slopes. Do not use a Rototill, which will expose and spread weed seeds.

10 Ways to Improve Your Home and Help the Environment

October 15, 2011 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

The U.S. Federal Government reports that the average American family uses about 75% more energy than families in the developed countries of Europe. Our energy use costs us roughly $1,300 a year on home utility bills per family. In this day and age, with global warming a looming threat and non-renewable energy sources growing scarcer and more costly, we should ask ourselves if we can really afford this rate of energy consumption. This is an amazing amount of waste considering that there are many simple ways that we can reduce our energy use and help the environment at the same time.

In this article, we’ve listed 10 simple steps you can take to help reduce your personal energy use, help the environment, and save money in the process. Even if you make use of just a couple of these tips, you’ll be helping to make big changes in your pocket book, the amount of energy you consume in your home, and your impact on the environment.

1. Switch to compact fluorescent bulbs. The California Energy Commission reports that lighting can make up to 25 percent of the average home’s electricity consumption. That’s why you can make a big difference if you switch your incandescent light bulbs to ultra efficient compact fluorescent bulbs. Studies report that by replacing 25 percent of the lights of your home with compact fluorescents, you can save as much as 50 percent of the money that you’d normally spend on lighting. Additionally, compact fluorescent bulbs can last up to seven years each! With the average cost of a fluorescent bulb being around $11.00, this means that you can potentially save around $20.00 for each bulb over three years if you switch to fluorescents. (Source: U.S. Department of Energy, Energy Information Administration).

2. Switch to a low-flow shower head. Another change you should make is switching to a low-flow showerhead. What does reducing your water use have to do with reducing energy consumption? According to a report by the California Efficiency Partnership, about 73% of the water you use in your shower is hot water, and hot water requires energy to create. The report shows that the use of low-flow shower heads and faucet aerators may reduce water heating costs by up to 50%. Not to mention the fact that you’ll notice significant savings on your water bill when using a low-flow showerhead. And by saving water, you’ll be protecting precious fresh water resources. With a basic low-flow showerhead, the average family can save about 8,000 gallons of water a year. A higher end model can mean even more savings.

3. Compost your yard and garden waste. The Environmental Defense Fund claims that 18% of the waste that the average family in the U.S. produces comes from the yard and garden. Moreover, other studies report that most of the garbage delivered to the landfill during the summer and fall comes from gardens and yards. By composting garden and yard debris back into our gardens, we can greatly reduce the amount of energy spent hauling this material to the dump. Additionally, we can put the compost to good use in our garden, making our plants more resistant to diseases and pests, and therefore reducing the need for fertilizers and pesticides.

4. Use landscaping wisely. Properly landscaping your home with shade trees and windbreaks can help you save money on heating and cooling. Deciduous trees (trees that lose their leaves) placed on the southern and western exposures of your home will shade and cool your home during the hot summer months. In the winter, when the trees lose their leaves, they will allow the sun to heat your home. In addition, if you use plants native to your area, you’ll end up using less water, and your plants will be more resistant to pests and diseases. With natives, you’ll spend less time maintaining your garden as well. Of course, we all know that growing trees and plants has other environmental benefits, including reducing air pollution and creating wildlife habitat.

5. Purchase a more efficient refrigerator. Your refrigerator is one of the most energy consuming devices in your home, so think about buying a modern, ultra-efficient refrigerator. Modern refrigerators can be up to twice as efficient as ones made ten years ago, so retiring your older model will help you save money and energy in the long run. It’s also a good idea to use the energy saving settings on your refrigerator. Most refrigerators show these recommended settings on the temperature gauge. If your fridge doesn’t list these settings, 38 degrees F and 5 degrees F for the freezer are good settings.

6. Insulate your home. The average family in the U.S. spends 50%-70% of their energy on heating and cooling, and many homes let energy escape due to improper insulation (Source: U.S. DOE). This means that properly insulating your home can make for big energy savings in the summer and the winter! Insulation keeps your house warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.

7. Seal your home. Sealing cracks and spaces in your doors, windows, and walls can be a big project, but it is one of the best ways to save energy and reduce your heating bills. You can actually tackle this project a little at a time. For example, you can start by weather-striping your doors, windows, and attic door. Caulking holes where pipes and wires pass into your home is also an easy way to reduce the amount of cold air that enters your home during the winter.

8. Use your washer and dryer more efficiently. Washing and drying clothes is a necessary chore, but if we rethink the way we wash, we can see big energy savings. For example, switching to a front-loading washing machine is a good start as they are typically more efficient than standard top loading machines. Also, if you hang your clothes out in the sun to dry and only use a clothes dryer on cloudy and rainy days, you can greatly cut down on your electricity bill. The sun is a wonderful free source of energy that will dry your clothes quickly and efficiently. When you do use your dryer, make sure you dry full loads and don’t overload your dryer.

9. Cook your meals more efficiently. By changing the way you cook your meals, you can actually save considerable amounts of energy. For example, using a pressure cooker can often cut your cooking time in half. Additionally, if you’re making small meals, try using smaller appliances such as toaster ovens to heat your food instead of your main oven.

10. Disconnect appliances when not in use. Another simple thing you can do to save energy in your home is to disconnect certain electrical appliances that you don’t use frequently. Many home appliances use a small amount of energy even when they’re turned off! If you unplug your T.V., VCR, and computer when you’re at work during the day, you’ll probably notice the change in your electricity bill. Over a few months, the savings will really add up. The U.S. government’s Energy Star program recommends plugging several of these appliances into a power strip that you can turn off at night or when you’re not at home. This makes it easier to disconnect several appliances at once.

For more information about ways to improve your home and protect the environment at the same time, check out the U.S. government’s Energy Star program: http://www.energystar.gov

Pond Liners - Which One to Use

October 14, 2011 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

There are several kinds of pond liners available in pond stores.

The first is EPDM rubber - and this is extremely durable, resists punctures and quite flexible. It is normally sold in 40 or 45 mil thickness. If you intend to put a rock bottom on top of your liner, this is the liner for you as it is very flexible and will give and take with freezing. The puncture resistance and flexibility ensure a long life and consistent performance. Usually guaranteed for over 20 years.

Polyethylene is the cheapest liner you can buy. But with this lowered cost comes a lowered lifespan. If exposed to sunlight - this material may only last one season. It is not puncture resistant and it is quite stiff. The only serious use of this material is if you have a very large pond with a sandy bottom and can bury the edges so the sunlight can’t get to it. But if you think you want to build a backyard pond cheaply, using this is truly false economy.

Polypropylene is another choice and it comes in the same thickness as EPDM and is equally puncture resistant. The problem comes in the flexibility (about the same as polyethylene which is to say terrible) and this makes it difficult to go around corners. But it is the strongest of the liners.

Old swimming pool liners make terrible liners as they tend to degrade quickly in the sunlight and are quite stiff.

And what about cheaper materials such as that for roofing. The difference between fish-safe and other material is that the fish safe liners are made with a consistent formula. Other non-fish materials might be OK in this batch but if compound A becomes cheaper next week, it will replace the more expensive compound B. The difficulty is that it doesn’t matter for roofing that compound A kills off fish while compound B does not. In fish-safe liners, all material used is consistently fish-safe. But it is possible to obtain a real deal on roof liner material sometimes - just be aware that it may or may not be fish safe.

Advantages of Custom Window Coverings

October 13, 2011 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Changing your window coverings is a popular and relatively simple piece of home improvement that can dramatically alter the look of your home in a short space of time. If you really want a change for your windows, then you might want to consider having custom window coverings made. These will be designed and made specifically with you and your tastes in mind. You can coordinate your design with a motif already found in your property, such as the pattern on a well loved sofa, or just choose your favourite colors and have the windows dressed up in those.

You are not just limited to curtains when you are having custom made window coverings, you can also choose blinds or shades if they are more appropriate to your design and existing decor.

There are now an enormous variety of shades to choose from. They add an element of privacy to your property but can be raised and lowered to let in as much light as required. Roman shades are a simple popular choice for custom made shades; they are not too expensive and can bring a classic, stylish look to any room. You can also choose from cellular, honeycomb, cordless, pleated, sheer, and roller shades to give your room that special personal touch.

Blinds are a popular alternative. Although they are not usually considered as aesthetically pleasing as shades, the different varieties and materials can produce exactly the look you require. They are also reasonably priced and can easily be made to fit even the oddest shaped window. The most popular material is till wood, but metal and vinyl can also work well. Blinds are available in vertical or horizontal styles, depending on your requirements.

Traditional drapes are of course, still widely used. They can be used in conjunction with blinds or shades for added impact. Most custom made curtains will begin with a particular pattern or color request, but you may just want drapes that fit in with the theme of your room, be that Victorian or Mediterranean.

So will custom made window coverings blow your budget? That is largely dependent on the type of fabric or material used and how big your windows are. You need to make sure you measure your window space accurately, or ask whoever is making your window coverings to come and measure up themselves. This avoid the embarrassment of making a substantial investment on custom made coverings, only to find they are a little too small when you get them home. Before you order custom made coverings, do check that your supplier offers a satisfaction guarantee and a decent warranty period for the product.

Greg Hansward repeatedly creates online reports on topics associated to curtains and home improvement. From his reports such as http://www.curtains-drapes-coverings.com/custom-window-coverings.html, the reviewer expressed his know-how on custom window coverings.

Ashley Furniture Gives Helpful Tips
