Flooring Installing Ceramic Tile

July 31, 2011 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Ceramic Tile brings a texture, richness and color to a room that Linoleum has yet to truly mimic. Tile floors can be installed in any room, however they are most frequently seen in Bathrooms and Kitchens. I particularly like them in entryways, where they serve as a transition point from the outside to large carpeted or hardwood floored rooms. They make for easy clean up and are impervious to water damage.

Tile Types

Ceramic tiles come in two basic types. Glazed and Porcelain. Glazed holds up the best for heavy traffic areas and porcelain works well in bathrooms. Porcelain is typically more expensive, so consider your budget and the size of the area you want to tile. Tiles also come in many shapes and sizes. For flooring, however, I would suggest using larger tiles up to 12″ x 12″.

Underlayment

For proper installation the base foundation or the underlayment is critical. Typically it consists of

Floor Tile Design For Better Home Decor

July 30, 2011 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

If one goes to a trip inside a house, the first thing that he will see is the floor. Once he takes his first step, he looks at the floor and nothing more. The difference is, if the flooring is not impressive, then the visitor will never notice it, but if the floor is filled with a wonderful array of tile designs, it’s going to leave a good impression on the mind of the visitor.

If he goes to the kitchen, the presence of good tiles will also be the first thing that he will notice. It’s not the pans nor the oven, nor the refrigerator, it’s the counter-top. If he goes to the bathroom to relieve himself, we’re pretty sure that he will definitely notice the tiles, if there are any.

Tiles are wonderful house ornaments which exist for the function of accentuating the beauty of one’s home. Tiles also have a purpose, and they are chosen according to where they are going to be put and how they are going to be used.

Types of Tiles

There are thousands of different types and styles of tiles. This is because tiles are used practically everywhere, not only in the house but in other structures as well. There are the common stock tiles which one can find in any common folk’s kitchen or bathroom. There are the higher-end ceramic tiles which are used in a more decorative fashion. There are also the stone tiles which come in different materials such as granite, marble or slate. Some tiles are mass produced and some are hand-made. The hand-painted tiles are usually the most expensive ones because they are made with a specific design which caters to a specific type of consumer.

Natural tiles (which are made from either stone or ceramic) will project a certain level of exquisiteness. These tiles are usually priced more expensively. They are very resilient and durable. The downside is that everything that falls into the tiles will certainly break most of the times because of the structural soundness of these tiles. They also keep the coldness of the environment which can be a downside in cold areas.

Different tiles are installed in different places according to their resilience, beauty and durability. There are tiles which are more suitable for flooring, there are those which are suitable for kitchen tops and those which are more suitable for the bathrooms. Diversity and combination are key things toward putting up a great tile design.

Installing Tiles

When installing tiles, it’s important to take note of the kind of tile you are using and the location where it is going to be put. Different materials entail different procedures and tools for installation. Often times, the specific instructions are given by the manufacturer, but to be sure, always ask the sales person regarding the specifics of the installation procedures.

There are several tools that one needs to have to be able to properly and cleanly install tiles. For the more advanced tile enthusiasts, having tile nippers, tile cutters and trowels would be good. Remember that installing tiles in flat surfaces is the key, however, curved surfaces can also be covered with tiles if needed. Remember that when purchasing tiles, always get some extra tiles because accidents will happen and some of the tiles will get broken. The law of averages also applies to tile installation.

Designing through Tiles

If you are thinking about installing tiles in a certain area of your house, a good practice is to make an illustration of the area. The dimensions of the area in the illustration should be proportional to the dimensions of the area. The area should be divided into the dimensions that would be proportionate to the tiles that you are going to use. This way, you can clearly see how each tile would fit into the specified area and you can estimate how many tiles you are going to buy. Don’t forget to include the buffer tiles in case some of them break.

Also make sure that the color of the tiles that you are going to use would match that of the rest of the area. The tiles need not to be of one-color only. One can mix and match as long as he knows that the colors will match.

Tiles greatly accentuate the beauty of one’s home. Whether they are placed in the floor, in the kitchen or elsewhere, proper preparation and installation of these tiles will definitely mark up the value of one’s home.

Creating A Cozy Spot

July 28, 2011 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Having a warm & cozy spot to snuggle up is important as
well as renewing. Creating intimacy in your home, or at
least in one area of your home, requires a little
imagination and some gut feelings. How does your family
room or sunroom make you feel when you walk into it? Are
the colors inviting? Is there comfortable seating? Winter
is the best time to paint and spruce up your rooms because
you can take advantage of all the white sales.

If you like to investigate with a “hands on” approach, hop
in the car and go to your favorite design stores (listed
under Interior Decorators & Designers). Look at the colors
they’re using as well as the kinds of furniture and fabrics.
Observe the accessories like throws, candles and mirrors.
You can get ideas from all kinds of stores like Pier 1,
department stores and small boutiques. Picture in your
mind how that still life would look in your home, take notes
and try to understand how it made you feel. If this is a
cozy spot in which you’d like to plop down right now and
read a long novel, you’ve hit gold.

Do the same investigating on the web by scoping out
stores, designers, designing sites, decorating websites and
how-to forums. Begin to learn why you like or dislike certain
elements, colors, etc. You’re working toward a focus on a
comfortable spot in your home.

Here are some easy steps:

Invest in a warm color for your walls, inexpensive
draperies on simple pole rods with classy finials and a
chenille throw (and maybe even a “bear” rug!). Move your
main chair close to the couch, add some lovely greenery
items, candles and statuary to the coffee table and you’re
set! Be sure to have a side table available to place your
book and cup of tea on while you enjoy your warm
surroundings.

The Secrets Of Winterizing Your Garden

July 26, 2011 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

If you’re like most people it isn’t the thought of winterizing your garden that gets you, it’s figuring out where to start. There’s just so much to do that it can sometimes be hard to know where to begin!

Well, relax. The harvest is in and putting your garden to bed, so to speak, is one of the more fun parts of gardening. You have a nice full cellar and pantry. The hard work is done, and you can relish the idea of preparing for next year’s garden.

Which is the perfect place to start winterizing your garden. One of the first things you should do is clean all the debris from your garden. Get rid of dead foliage, leaves, roots, stakes and row markers. The debris you clean from your garden can be added to your compost heap which will be a big help come spring. You want to be sure, though, not to add any diseased debris or pest infected dead leaves or stalks in your compost pile. You don’t want to accidentally spread a disease from this year’s garden to next year’s.

And now that you’re in cleaning mode, get out the rake and attack those fallen leaves scattered across your lawn. Why is it so important to remove leaves from your lawn? Because the grass underneath the leaves still needs all light it can get. Raking leaves from your lawn also lets adequate air and moisture get to living plants in your yard. After all, you don’t want any of your lovely grass and plants to suffocate!

Winterizing your garden also means mulching. You want to spread a light layer of mulch, just a few inches of it, around your trees and shrubs. This helps keep the underground temperature more stable throughout the winter, as well as offers much-needed protection to roots underneath the surface. Careful, though, too much mulch will become a home for rodents, which is the last thing you want. Mice just love to chew on bark, so don’t give them a place to hide while they munch away.

When winterizing your garden, you will also want to take the time to plan next year’s vegetable garden. After ridding your vegetable garden plot of debris, old leaves and roots, plan where you want to put next year’s vegetables. Take a pad with you out to the garden and make a sketch of where you want to put all your lovely vegetable plants in the spring. Doing this helps you make the most use of your garden area. No space goes unused if you take the time to planwhich means more delicious vegetables for you next summer and fall!

You’ll also want to be sure you’ve taken proper care to winterize your garden equipment and tools. Drain the gas from your lawnmower’s tank, weed eater and other garden equipment. You may also want to put the battery from the lawnmower and any other garden equipment into storage where it will remain at a steady, above-freezing temperature. This will help lengthen the life of the battery, which is good, because there’s nothing worse than getting ready or needing to mow only to find your lawnmower battery is dead.

Take the time to put your tools and gardening utensils away for their long winter’s nap too. Make sure they’re stored where mice can’t nibble on the handles (they like all kinds of wood, you know). Also make sure they’re all cleaned before you store them away. And yes, please throw away any tools that are worn out and replace them or start dropping hints to your family and friends about tools and equipment you need for gardening. This not only gives your family ideas for holiday gifts, it ensures that you won’t be all excited and ready to start next year’s gardening only to have tools breaking on you left and right, leaving you frustrated and having to make extra trips to the local home improvement store.

Now that your garden tools are ready for winter, the next step in winterizing your garden is to hit the local bookstores (or favorite online gardening site!). Yes, you read that correctly. Once the work of winterizing your garden’s behind you, it’s time to curl up on the sofa in front of the fire with a lovely stack of gardening books beside you. Because the only thing that comes close to bringing you the same enjoyment that being in your garden does is being engrossed in a great book about gardening!

Outdoor Kitchens - How to Get Started

July 25, 2011 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Outdoor kitchens go much further than the simple barbecue and prep station. Outdoor kitchen areas are one of the hottest new trends in residential landscape design and can include a wide variety of appliances and features. Whether you are looking to add a small fireplace, or have a completely functional outdoor kitchen with plumbing and granite countertops, you can achieve the look you want with a little budgeting, planning, and hard work.

Before you start your outdoor kitchen project, look at different outdoor kitchen plans online or in books. There are many outdoor kitchen plans that can help you turn your backyard into a functional and stylish entertainment area. You may even be able to custom design an outdoor kitchen space with the help of a computer program.

When planning your outdoor kitchen space, you’ll need to consider how much patio or lawn room that you currently have. This will determine the size of your outdoor kitchen that will, in turn, determine how elaborate your outdoor kitchen will be. One of the outdoor kitchen essentials that you must make room for is a barbecue. After choosing your perfect barbecue, and determining how much space it will take, consider what other items you will add to your outdoor kitchen. You can add cabinets for storage with countertops and include patio furniture in your outdoor kitchen design.

You must also consider how you will light your outdoor kitchen area. One of the most popular options is solar lighting. These lighting elements store up energy during the day and turn on automatically at night to illuminate your outdoor kitchen. There are many different style of solar lighting available.

Having an outdoor kitchen space can be a wonderful way to entertain during the warm months. With the right planning and considerations, your outdoor kitchen space can be comfortable and functional, providing a great place to make fun summertime memories for your family and friends.

Lawn Mushrooms - How to Deal with Them

July 24, 2011 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Lawn Mushrooms. What Causes Them and Can You Get Rid of Them?

In order to understand what is involved in the permanent removal of lawn mushrooms, it is important to know where they come from, and what causes them. Lawn mushrooms are simply the product of fungi infested in you yard soil in one or more areas of your yard. They are actually the fruit of this fungus, and feed off different sources that could be present. Lawn mushrooms feed off decaying matter such as:

. Old mulch
. Animal waste
. Rotting tree stumps

Abundance of food sources for the fungi in your yard soil will pretty much ensure the presence of lawn mushrooms in your yard. The more food sources for the fungi, the bigger the lawn mushrooms will grow. That is the reason sometimes the lawn mushrooms will be very large, and sometimes they will be very small. It all depends on the amount of food sources the fungi has available. Permanently ridding your yard of lawn mushrooms means totally eliminating the food sources for the fungi. While this can be difficult, and sometimes impossible, the following paragraphs will provide some insight on what is involved in permanently ridding your yard of lawn mushrooms.

Most people spend a lot of time trying to rid their yard of lawn mushrooms. Removing them as you see them is one method of removal, but it will be a never-ending task during several months of the year. Continual removal will keep the appearance of your yard up to par, but the source of the lawn mushrooms will still be present. Thus, the lawn mushrooms are likely to return in the future.

Chemical removal is another method home owners use to rid their yards of lawn mushrooms. As with continual removal, the chemicals will normally kill the mushrooms that are present. But with the food sources for the fungi still present in your yard soil, the lawn mushrooms are likely to return.

Some homeowners research to find a more permanent end to their lawn mushroom problem. There is only one way to permanently rid your yard of lawn mushrooms, and that is to exhaust all of the food sources in your yard and soil. Performing the following tasks could aid in permanently ridding your yard of lawn mushrooms:

. Clean up pet waste
. Dispose of rotting mulch
. Have old tree stumps ground

Having old tree stumps ground may aid in the permanent ridding of lawn mushrooms, but it could also cause a type of mushroom called fairy rings to appear. Most lawn mushrooms do not harm your lawn, but fairy rings are known to commonly kill grass in certain areas of your lawn.

The only effective way of permanent removal of lawn mushrooms of any kind is to rid the fungi of its food source. Sometimes, even after an old tree stump has been removed, the fairy rings and lawn mushrooms come back. In this case, the soil containing the fungi had to be removed, as well. When the food sources for the fungi have all been exhausted, and any soil infested with the mold spores has been removed, you should cease to see the presence of lawn mushrooms in your yard.

Hall Bench Perhaps the Most Valuable Furniture Piece

July 23, 2011 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

People are somewhat funny when it comes to indoor benches: either they positively love benches or they don’t. In most cases, a home either has a bench in nearly every room or there isn’t a single one to be found anywhere. Now this is a somewhat amazing fact because there probably aren’t too many homes out there that could not benefit from the numerous advantages offered by a bench. In particular, a quality-made upholstered hall bench can multi-task and handle a number of important roles, including:

1. Added storage for things like bed linens, outdoor clothing, and just about anything that needs a handy place to be stored out of everyone’s way but still accessible

2. Serve as extra seating during family gatherings and this is still true if the bench is made completely from wood and un-upholstered. Any spare seat that can double as a storage space is an added bonus in any home.

3. Temporary station for incoming/outgoing children. This is perhaps the most useful feature of any quality hall bench and makes home living very convenient when the space is filled with little ones. All shoes, gloves, scarves, backpacks, and anything else that can never be found when its time to leave can be conveniently stored away in hall bench until its needed.

Most bedroom and other indoor benches are great for storing itemsboth inside and atop! It is also common for most quality made wooden benches to be made from quality materials like:

1. Oak

2. Cherry

3. Mahogany

4. Cedar

5. Yellow Pine

However, the true advantage of a premium hall bench is convenience. It would be improper to seat guests upon a bedroom bench but an extra seat or three in the hallway is perfect for sitting children and even distinguished guests. Plus, when you consider the convenience of having a well-positioned storage facility that doubles as a seating areathe quality-made hall bench makes getting the kids off to school a breeze instead of a dreaded, stress-filled chore!

When shopping for hall benches, be careful to consider the purchase carefully. Truly well-crafted benches made from premium materials can literally last a lifetime. Therefore, make sure that the hall bench will be a fit with the other home d
