Designing an Edible Garden

July 31, 2010 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

When considering an edible garden the first thing most people will think of is the vegetable garden. Vegetable gardens are by far the most popular type of edible garden for the home gardener. There are, however, many garden trees, shrubs, perennials and groundcovers which are both edible and attractive enough for use in your landscape design.

Second to the vegetable garden in terms of popularity is the herb garden. They’re an attractive yet very useful addition to any garden. Many herbs will flower along with perennials in the garden. Thyme, for example, is a great spring flowering groundcover as well as a prized herb in the kitchen. When designing your herb garden, especially if you intend to use the herbs that you grow, it is best to keep it in close range of your kitchen, just outside your backdoor, for example. Pots and containers other options if you have a sunny deck or windowsill. In either case, the closer, the better.

Other useful herbs for the garden include; basil, oregano, rosemary, parsley, cilantro (also known as coriander), Laurel (bay) and lemon verbena. Each of these are widely used in cooking. Chamomile, Peppermint and Spearmint are popular edible herbs that can be used for making tea.

Trellises and arbors which support edible grapevines are an aesthetically pleasing feature in the landscape and can provide some shade to a sunny patio. Grapevines are vigorous growers so be sure to choose a structure which is strong enough to support them.

When selecting trees for you r garden, consider, if space allows, orchards of apple or pear trees. An orchard is one of the most productive yet beautiful landscapes one can imagine. Where space is limited, one or two fruit bearing trees planted in the garden serve as wonderful accent plants. Fruit trees are one of the most common and versatile garden plants available; they provide seasonal interest to the landscape with showy displays of colorful flowers in the spring and colorful foliage in the fall. While apple and pear trees are great, don’t overlook nut producing trees, such as the black walnut. These trees are generally larger than fruit trees and can provide a good amount of shade in the garden.

Instead of the more traditional groundcovers, try planting strawberries. They’re a fast grower and can spread over a larger area within a just a few years.

Edible plants can even be incorporated within the traditional shrub border. Quince, for example, fits in perfectly in the sunny border with its beautiful peach colored flowers in the spring. Highbush blueberries are an excellent shrub for naturalizing the landscape or for serving as a backdrop to the rest of the garden. Plant them along the edge of the forest as a transition plant between the existing natural landscape and garden. They are also ideal for wet soils. Lowbush blueberries, as the name suggests, are low growing and, when planted on a slope, work well as groundcovers.

When planning an edible landscape, think beyond the vegetable garden and herb garden. There are numerous edible plants which can be integrated into your garden. Edible gardens are also a wonderful way to attract wildlife to your garden. What doesn’t get eaten by visitors to your garden will surely be eaten by birds and other animals.

Marble Miracles via Waterjet

July 30, 2010 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

When 26-year-old Michelangelo sculpted the statue David from a block of marble 500 years ago, his tools were basic and crude compared to what is available today. And although solid marble floors were created for the wealthy back then, the artists did not have the tools to make intricate, delicate patterns in the marble. A slab of marble remained a slab of marble cut to the required size.

Today’s technology for creating masterpieces of architectural design from marble is centered on the cutting technology of waterjet. A Master Designer is no longer limited in expressing his creativity as the waterjet machines can cut, with meticulous precision, the thousands of various-shaped pieces that comprise a work of art. Marble-granite-onyx floor medallions, an example of the practical use of waterjet technology, can be seen not only in hotel lobbies, restaurants and airports, but in fine homes around the globe. These medallions express uniqueness, quality and originality, and are considered an excellent investment. They come in original designs, or pre-made, ready-to-install designs, or a customized version of the pre-made version. And, they are economical.

What is waterjet Cutting?

An environmentally friendly process
A process that does not create chemical air pollution
A process that does not create dust, grindings, or chips
A process that does not generate pollutants or fumes
A process that does not require cutting oils or emulsions
A process that is clean and efficient

What items can be cut with waterjet?

Marble and granite, and all other stones
Ceramics and porcelain
Linoleum, vinyl, and sports flooring
All metals, including brass, muntz, CorTen Steel, stainless steel
Glass
Almost any material that you want to cut into a two-dimensional shape
Being a clear, cold process, waterjet cutting does not distort, heat, or harden materials
When conventional cutting methods can’t cut through a material, waterjet can
No pressure or heat is exerted on the material, making it safe for plastics or composites, or items that cannot tolerate mechanical damage or heat

What patterns can be cut with waterjet?

If you can draw it on a computer, waterjet can cut it
Images come from electronic files, drawings, blueprints, etc.
The images are converted into a language the waterjet machines can read.
This ‘converted image’ is downloaded onto the waterjet machine

What about the cost?

Waterjet cutting is the most economical way to cut stainless steel, porcelain, or any stone into complex shapes.
Being environmentally friendly makes it very cost effective
The savings over traditional cutting methods is often substantial
There are no molding or tooling costs associated with waterjet

What are some of the main architectural uses of waterjet technology in the commercial world? The intricate masterpieces created with the waterjet technology are found around the world in:

Airports
Government Buildings
Hospitals
Hotels, Resorts, Casinos
Restaurants
Malls
Outdoor Public Spaces

Medallions are found in all of the above places, along with an artistically designed whole floor concept that delightfully leads one from the entryway into all the areas where the public or employees walk. The medallions are sometimes the logo of the local sports team, or the trademark of the business.

Other uses of waterjet technology in these commercial areas include architectural signage, plaques and murals. These murals can depict famous places that attract tourists to the area.

What are the main architectural uses of waterjet technology in residences?

Stone Floor Medallions may be located throughout the home, starting with a Custom Entryway

Border Tiles, along with an artistically designed whole, flowing-floor concept, gently carry one from the entryway to living room, dining room, halls, kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms in an integrated, beautiful way.

Bathrooms - a sublime bathing experience when planned by a Master Designer

Kitchens - blending the floors, countertops, and dining areas into a daily delightful cooking/baking/eating experience

Taking Care Of Your Beautiful Garden Pond

July 29, 2010 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Keep a pond looking great by following certain seasonal, as well as typical guidelines
When it is time for the colder air to take over, pond care will still be necessary if you want to maintain the good condition of your pond. Autumn can bring challenges for pond care.

The first point I need to make about pond care in autumn leaves that fall into the pond will decay if not removed. Perhaps you can skim the surface of your pond to remove them. However, this method of pond careonce fall is really kicking inmay have to be done many times throughout the same day.

One better idea, in my opinion, for keeping falling leaves out of your pond is to purchase a cover for it. Perhaps just a small canvas big enough to cover the water, nothing fancy, you can set it up with stakes or stones.

Try to keep as much sludge out of the pond during the colder months. There will be slime, decay of water plants and other plant debris, and you will certainly need to perform the proper pond care to keep your pond from becoming an enormous chore when the warm seasons begin.

If you have fish in the water, for great pond care, be sure to feed them less. This is because when the cold approaches the fish will eat less due to a slowing metabolism. Extra fish food in your pond can contribute to the bacterial problems that often develop during the winter. Someone who wants to provide great pond care for his or her pond will want to make sure that, by using good pond care, he or she will keep as few bacterial sources away from the water as he or she possibly can.

For your fishes, pond care is very important. You can provide foods for your fish, which contain a protein content of twenty-five to thirty-two percent. A wheat germ based food is good fish pond care. During this time of year the food easily digested.

Pond care spring and autumn food is an excellent choice for you to maintain your pond at this time of year. When you practice the proper pond care, you will definitely be glad you did.

These are only some of the guidelines for pond care. Depending on your individual pond care needs, the advice I have just given may vary. For example: even if you have no fish in your pond, certain pond care is still especially important.

How To Replace The Rollers On Your Patio Door

July 28, 2010 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Have you noticed your patio door is getting harder and harder to open? Maybe it’s time to change the rollers on the door. They generally last from ten to fifteen years but they do wear out and its a job that a do-it-yourselfer can accomplish with a little advice and some strong arms to get the door out!

Sliding patio doors are usually aluminum but there are many wooden and vinyl models on the market. All of them use ball bearing rollers to slide easily back and forth. The aluminum and some vinyl doors have a door bottom that is held in place by 2 screws on either side of the door near the bottom. Beneath the screw is usually an open hole in which there is an adjusting screw to raise the roller up and down. The wooden doors often have pairs of rollers due to their extra weight. The adjusting screws are accesible through plastic caps covering holes in the front of the door bottom.

I mention the adjusting screws because you need to check them before deciding to pull the door out and replace the rollers. Slide a big flat blade screwdriver underneath the door on one side and lift slightly to remove the weight from the roller. Use another screwdriver to turn the adjustment screw. See if that makes the door slide better.

Sometimes thats all thats necessary but if the adjusting screws wont turn or are totally missing, you will have to lift the door out of its track and remove the large screws holding the door bottom on and pull the door bottom off. Get help to lift the door out. Two people are needed to safely handle even the smaller patio doors. The door bottom may not pull off easily especially if the door is old. Check for any metal tabs that may be holding it on and gently work the bottom off.

Some old aluminum and vinyl patio doors have rollers that use one screw both to mount the roller and to adjust it. These types of rollers can often be changed without removing the bottom of the door. Look carefully at the bottom of the door in case there is room to pull the roller assembly out.

Wooden patio door rollers are somewhat easier to change, although the door itself is much heavier. The rollers are often screwed in to the wood door bottom. Remove the screws, and out come the roller.

Some Vinyl patio doors are glued together. They were never intended to come apart. You may not be able to remove the rollers if you see no visible screws holding the frame together. Also vinyl doors are often brittle with age and crack easily as you try to pry off the door bottom. Take extra care if you have a vinyl patio door.

Once you have the bottom off the patio door it should be easy to see how the rollers are held in. Usually, removing one screw or bending a metal tab is all thats necessary. Remove the rollers and take them with you to your local glass shop to get the proper replacements.

To reassemble everything start by adjusting the new rollers so they are up as high as they can go. You dont want them getting in the way when you reinstall the door on its track. Make sure you cover the roller retaining screws with cork or rubber if they come near the bare glass in the door bottom. If the metal screws touch the glass, it will crack.

Replace the door bottom, reinstall the screws that secure it and lift the door back in to place. Follow the instructions gave earlier for adjusting the rollers. You should now be able to see the door move up and down when you turn the adjusting screws. You will also be able to align the door with the frame using the screws. Your patio door lock may need to be adjusted to compensate for the new door height.

Try the door and you should be amazed at how easy it is to close. It should only require a couple of pounds of force to open and close. No more fighting with a heavy door and you did it all yourself!

Building a Home Addition

July 26, 2010 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Besides providing your home with more living space, a home addition can be a terrific investment. However, before embarking on such a project the homeowner should first consider several important items. These items include: home market values in the neighborhood, financing, size and scale of project, architecture, timetable for completion, personal disruption/inconvenience threshold and the sweat equity commitment level.

Size of Addition and Market Value

Prior to actually breaking ground on a home addition, it is best to first determine what you are looking for in terms of additional living space. For example: How many square feet? What types of rooms? Once this is understood, it is then important to find out the market value of homes in the local area with similar size and features to the new and improved home. With this information the homeowner can then calculate the difference between their current home market value and the new and improved home market value. This difference should represent the maximum budget for the new addition if a positive investment is desired. For example, a homeowner would not want to spend $50,000 on a new home addition that provides only $25,000 in increased market value to the improved home.

Financing

The next important question involves how to fund the home addition. Unless the project is being funded via cash/savings then financing will be required. If current mortgage rates are higher than the existing mortgage, then a home equity loan will probably make the most sense. If current mortgage rates are lower than the existing mortgage, then refinancing the entire home, including the cost of the home addition project, may make the most sense.

Architectural Considerations

Once the financial items have been addressed it is then time to focus on the size and scale of the project, as well as the architectural and aesthetics of the new addition. The addition should be of size and scale such that it aesthetically melds into the original house. It should not be too small or too big. Frequently, homeowners get carried away and add large amounts of new living space without sufficient thought on the outside appearance. From a market value, there is more to a home than just pure living space. A home needs to maintain its exterior aesthetics as well. It is important to consider such items as siding, doors, windows, rooflines, and elevations. All should meld into the existing home exterior seamlessly and aesthetically.

If an architect is not planned for the project, then the homeowner should at least make some sketches of the home exterior with the new addition. The building inspector will probably require them anyways during the permit process. Also, there are many Home Design software packages on the market today that can help create such drawings.

Schedule and Sweat Equity Commitment

The next two items that should be considered include the timetable for completing the project and the homeowner sweaty equity commitment level. Many homeowners assume they can do a lot more than they are either skilled to do or have the time to do. From personal experience, I would suggest contracting out the site/ground work, rough framing, roofing, siding, heating/cooling, and the drywall. All of these tasks require skill, time and brawn. If local laws permit, electric and plumbing may be tackled by the homeowner. However, both require skill and can be life threatening if not performed properly. Other tasks that a homeowner could tackle include installing interior doors, finish trim, painting, cabinet installation, tiling and hardwood flooring. Prior to a homeowner signing up to any specific task however, they should first honestly assess their skill and available time, and compare them to their project schedule. If they don’t match, hire the contractor.

Threshold of Inconvenience and Disruption

Finally, a homeowner should consider their threshold for inconvenience and disruption. A home addition, particularly if it involves the kitchen, is very disruptive to today’s busy lifestyles. It is also a dusty, dirty and noisy endeavor. In addition, dealing with subcontractors can be challenging at times. For a typical addition anticipate several months of effort and inconvenience.

If after assessing all these issues you are still willing to move forward with the project, contact your subcontractors, pull your permits and get ready for an exciting time. For most homeowners tackling a home addition is a positive experience that provides both new living space and a great investment.

Three Choices in Kitchen Cabinet Refacing

July 25, 2010 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

There is a wide variety of color and finishing options for kitchen cabinet refacing. There are both solid colors and a variety of wood grain finishes to choose from. Some are very simple patterns and others are more decorative. The quality and cost vary according to the finish material used in refacing the cabinetry.

Cabinet Refacing Materials

There are three basic materials used in most kitchen refacing projects. These are plastic laminates, wood veneer and rigid thermofoils. Plastic laminate is the least expensive option. It also has the lowest quality in overall appearance. The wood grains aren’t very convincing. It’s fairly easy to tell the difference between the laminates and natural wood, even from a distance.

Wood veneer looks more realistic than either plastic laminate or rigid thermofoil. It is the most popular choice for adding the beauty and warmth of wood to the kitchen. It is also the most expensive option in refacing. Wood veneer is available in nearly every wood tone. The most popular are maple, oak, birch and cherry woods.

Rigid thermofoils are the newest material used in remodeling cabinetry. These consist of fiberboard material covered with a pressure molded vinyl foil. There are fewer solid colors and wood grain choices in this material. The wood grains are more realistic in appearance when compared to plastic laminates at a distance. The look isn’t as good when you are looking at them close up.

Rigid thermofoils are much more pliable than laminates. They can be molded into a wide range of styles. This gives more decorative options in the look of the cabinet doors. They can be molded into raised panels or arches. More detail can be added with this material. The cost is higher than plastic laminates, but lower than wood veneers.

Other Kitchen Cabinet Refacing Options

In most cases, the hinges and drawer tracks are not replaced. Depending on their condition, you may want to consider having them replaced during the remodeling. If drawers are no longer opening smoothly, it is a good idea to replace the tracks. Some people opt for new drawers, rather than using the old components with new fronts. The cost is higher, but not considerably.

Other updates can be easily done at the same time. This is a good time to replace the countertops. The old ones will need to be taken out and put back anyway. If the counters are in good shape, it’s not a problem to put them back. If they are worn or not really what you want in the new kitchen, this is a good time to invest in new ones.

The sink is another consideration. It will also need to be taken out. Whether the sink is not in the best shape, or you just don’t like it, replacing it at the same time won’t add significantly to the overall budget. Sinks are generally not very expensive, depending on the type and material used. This is a good time to have a new sink installed. New sinks and counters will give your kitchen a complete makeover.

Buying Displayed Furniture

July 24, 2010 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Have you ever just had to have a certain piece of furniture right then - you won’t leave the store without it? If you have ever had such an experience, you have probably been offered the displayed floor model. If you have not had a similar experience, be aware of these issues that might arise when buying a demo, displayed piece of furniture.

Most stores can order furniture for you unless the particular model you want is being discontinued. Or, unless you absolutely, positively plan to walk out of the store with the sofa, recliner, or other piece of furniture that very day.

If you find yourself in either of the above situations, you should be aware of the pros and cons of buying a demo or displayed piece of furniture.
The biggest pro, obviously, is being able to have the instant gratification of immediate ownership. If really, really want a piece of furniture that is on display, try to hold your enthusiasm for the piece until you can talk with the sales person. Ask if there is a discount for buying the floor model. That would be a second pro.

If a commissioned sales person can see how desperate you are to own that piece of furniture, he or she might be more likely to hold you to the original price. The best way to proceed is to ask the sales person what kind of price he can give you for that piece. Then, ask what price he can give you on the floor model. With any luck, the prices will show a decrease each time you ask!

If there is no discount for buying the floor model, proceed with caution. Don’t let your urge for immediate ownership of the furniture to keep you from getting the best deal. Back away and think about it. Can you wait another two weeks for a brand new piece of furniture to be shipped to your house? If the answer is no, go back and look at the furniture. Prepare to give it a good inspection.

If it is a sofa or chair, chances are that many of people have tried it out by sitting in it. Look at the seat. Is it worn or showing any signs of wear? Check out the back. Sometimes the natural oils from hair or the back side of necks can rub off on furniture cushions. Look for oily spots on the cushions.

Take a look at the arms. Are they worn? Pay special attention to the cording on the arms and cushions. As people get up or lean back to get comfortable, the cording gets extra friction against it and shows signs of wearing sooner.

Next, check the seams. Are any of the seams pulling apart? This might happen if a number of people have tried out the furniture. As people sit on the cushions, the seams tend to pull. They generally go back in place when the person gets up, but continued use could cause seams to separate permanently.

If you spot any signs of wear, point them out to the sales person. If he still won’t come down off the price, walk on by. Place your order and wait for a perfect model to arrive just for you!

Care and Maintenance for Butcher Blocks Countertops and Kitchen Islands

July 22, 2010 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

The wood is widely considered the healthiest building material in the world. The solid wood represents a reliable, sturdy material that can last very long without requiring excessive protection. However, wood is a natural living material and, unlike man-made materials, it reacts to different environments in specific ways. We would like to draw your attention to the basic maintenance instructions for the solid wood countertops, island tops or butcher blocks. Following these directions will result in having a great looking, easy to maintain custom countertop that will last for many years.

Tops with a Mineral Oil Finish

The panel must be oiled carefully on top, bottom and sides, giving a special attention to the end-grain area, as the section that the wood is most likely to absorb humidity through. Each cut or drill you make in the panel (either for size adjustment, sink cutout or other purposes) must also be oiled thoroughly. Proterra mineral oil (Hesse, Germany) is a product that we recommend for kitchen tops applications given that it was specially designed to come in contact with foods. For situations where there is a great deal of humidity involved (like sinks, water faucets, etc) the mineral oil only will not assure the best protection and it is advisable to use polyurethane or any other similar finishing instead.

With a soft brush, oil the wood generously on all sides or simply pour a small quantity of oil on the wood and then spread it with the brush. Let the wood soak the oil for about 20-30 minutes and then remove the excess with an absorbent paper towel. When the top is first installed, it is advisable to apply 2-3 successive coats of oil, after which, the oil can be applied once several months or whenever needed. Every time you sand the area to remove scratches or cut marks, a new coat of oil must applied.

Maintenance

In order to keep your wooden top clean, periodically scrape or brush away any food residues existing on its surface, wash with warm soapy water and dry it well using either a dry cloth or paper towels. Apply a new coat of oil any time needed. Alternatively, you can warm up a 1:4 combination of beeswax and mineral oil until the mixture becomes homogenized and then apply it uniformly on top’s surface, thus getting supplementary protection against both stains and humidity.

Avoid setting your wood top next to extreme heat sources like stoves unless there is appropriate insulation between the heat source and the top. Avoid spilling vinegar on a wood top having a mineral oil finishing, as it can cause cupping or cracking. Do not use corrosive chemicals or excessively harsh detergents on a wooden top having a mineral oil finishing, as they can cause irreversible depreciation.

Repairing

If properly installed and sealed and periodically oiled, there is no reason that your top won’t last a long period of time in the same good shape it was when new. Sometimes however, due to poor maintenance and improper environmental conditions, some problems might arise; it is our duty, therefore to inform about these problems and the way to solve them.
