Refinishing Wood Flooring

March 31, 2010 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Is your wood flooring already worn out? Has it already gone through the tough tests and is now looking old and pale? It may be time to refinish your wood flooring and make it look new again.

How do you know it is time to refinish the floor? You can do this simple step. Go to the area where the floor is mostly used, your living room perhaps. Get a tablespoon of water and pour it onto the floor. If the water forms beads and can easily be wiped out, there is no need to refinish it yet. Your floor is still in good condition.

If the water that you just poured slowly seeps into the floor and creates a visible spot, it may already need refinishing touches. You may want to keep it in your to-do list and schedule a time when you can do the refinishing. However, if the water seeps in as quickly as you had poured it, then don’t waste more time. Your floor definitely needs refinishing, and soon.

Refinishing your wood flooring would require equipments such as a drum sander. Other equipments may be needed for other more detailed tasks in the finishing process. You need not buy those equipments, though. These equipments are available for rent in your local home shops such as Home Depot. You can rent them on a daily or weekly basis.

Different grit papers are used in the drum sander for different floor types. The lower the grit paper number is, the coarser it is for use on more damaged woods. Once you have chosen the right grit paper, you can now start sanding the wood using the equipment. It is suggested that you do the sanding diagonally on both ways then along the grain.

Once you are done sanding the whole floor with that procedure, repeat the process again using a finer grit paper (one with a higher number). After sanding the whole floor again, you can now sand the edges using a spinner/edger machine.

Vacuuming is the next step to clean off the sand dusts. Should there be gaps present after the sanding process, fill them in using the sand dust mixed with varnish to form a paste. Then leave the floor alone for some time.

After a few hours, repeat the sanding process again, this time doing it along the grain with a much finer grit. Do this twice using the highest grit number on the last sanding. After which, vacuum the floor once more and sweep off the sanddust.

Once the floor is dust-free, it is now time to apply the coat. You would need a roller to do this. Before using the roller, make sure it is clean first using a stiff brush to remove dirt and loose hairs that might get into the finish.

The urethane coating can now be applied across the floor grain by strips. Once the whole array of strips is completed, go back to the starting strip and make sure there are no roller marks or urethane build up.

Let the first coating dry for some time. When the coat is completely dry, the next step is to sand the whole floor using an orbital sander. Vacuum and sweep the floor afterwards to remove the dust.

Finally, the second coating can now be applied using the same procedure as the first. When you do the second coating, make sure the sun doesn’t shine through the window to any part of the floor to avoid uneven marks.

Refinishing your wood flooring is relatively easy as long as you have the right equipment. The rent may be a little costly though, but not as expensive as replacing your whole floor. You can even save more doing it yourself than hiring somebody to do it for you. Also, wouldn’t you be proud to show off your work and tell your friends you did it by yourself?

Nicely finished or refinished floors make your home look more beautiful. It is also a healthy alternative than carpets. Carpets are known to cause allergies because they are difficult to clean. Having just bare, nicely finished wood flooring will help you have a healthy environment inside your own home. Dusts, pests, molds, and animal stains can easily be cleaned up as well.

Chandeliers - Not Just For Dining Table Anymore!

March 30, 2010 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Who honestly doesn’t love the elegance and refinement of a gorgeous chandelier? For centuries, chandeliers were found in the finest homes, castles, and palaces throughout the world. The crystal chandelier literally became an iconic status symbol and many can still be found that are just simply too large to be displayed in any home that people actually live in. However, chandeliers are made for use in “real people” homes and the vast majority hang above the dining room table.

Chandeliers are a variety of ceiling fixtures that either provide illumination directly downward or bounce the light upwards where it will then reflect downwards towards the room. In other words, the bulbs are either facing downwards or they are inverted along with the lamp shades in an effort which tends to reduce glare and diffuse light to a greater degree.

Another defining feature of the chandelier is the use of multiple light bulbs and lampshades. Unlike many ceiling fixtures which may use a single bulb with a high wattage output in order to generate the necessary ambient lighting to properly illuminate a space, the chandelier uses several bulbs. This feature of the chandelier allows for the use of bulbs with lower wattage to produce the same or more illumination with less glare and eye strain.

The multiple bulbs and high ambient lighting output tend to make chandeliers the perfect choices for dining rooms. Placed above the dining room table which is generally situated as the focal point of the room anyway, a chandelier naturally suits the space and sparse d

Developing a Garage Addition Building Plan and Estimating Garage Addition Costs

March 29, 2010 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

The decision to add on a garage addition to a home is one of the best home improvement projects a homeowner can make. A garage addition provides great utility and can significantly increase the value of a home. Prior to actually breaking ground, however, a garage addition plan and garage addition costs estimates should be developed.

A garage addition plan starts with making initial sketches of the garage addition concept and evaluating how it will tie in with the existing home structure. Though most homeowners prefer a large garage, it is very important during this phase to consider proportions between the existing home and the new garage addition. To aesthetically look appealing from the road the garage addition length should not exceed two-thirds the length of the existing home. Otherwise the garage addition could overwhelm the existing home structure. The depth or width of the garage addition is less critical from an aesthetic standpoint, as it is usually less visible from the road.

Once the initial sketches have been completed, detailed garage addition building plans should be generated. Depending on the complexity of the garage addition either the homeowner or an architect can develop the actual garage addition building plans. In either case, the plans will need to include scaled drawings with dimensions, and cross-sectional construction views with constructional materials specified. The cross-sectional views should include from the concrete footings all the way to the peak of the roof. Each new transition from the footings up should be carefully drawn. Examples include: the footing/foundation transition, the foundation/sill plate transition, and the wall/roof rafter transition. The plans should also include a comprehensive bill of materials for the project. In addition, all property lines and appropriate setbacks should be clearly shown in the drawings.

Estimating the garage addition costs depends on who is building the addition. If the homeowner plans on acting as his or her own general contractor and performing some of the work (e.g. the framing) then costs will need to be calculated starting with the bill of materials generated during the planning phase. With a comprehensive bill of materials a homeowner can provide much of the list to any home improvement store where they can fill out the pricing information for the specific items for the project. For specialty items such as garage doors, garage door openers, and in some cases lighting and plumbing fixtures (if required for the garage addition) the homeowner may need to contact specialty stores for pricing. The subcontractors may also be able to provide some unit pricing (e.g. garage doors).

If the homeowner is acting as his or her own general contractor and will require subcontractors, then it is important that they identify early the subcontractors and review with them the plans and development schedule. Each subcontractor should provide a firm fixed estimate for the particular job based on the plans and bill of materials. In addition their bid should also include start/complete dates for the particular job.

With garage addition plans and costs estimates in place the homeowner can then proceed with pulling permits and developing a fairly accurate building schedule.

Once permits have been approved, construction of the garage addition can begin. It is important to note, however, that even with the best plans in place things happen and schedules slip. To mitigate schedule slips a homeowner acting as his or her own general contractor should factor in some buffer to the schedule and always be looking ahead several weeks during the entire project. They should regularly check with suppliers to ensure building material will arrive when required and should occasionally check with subcontractors to ensure that their schedules are still in line with your garage addition project.

With these simple planning, budgeting and scheduling issues addressed prior to the start of the project, building a garage addition can be a positive experience both pre and post construction phase.

For more information on building a garage addition see the Garage Addition Bid Sheet from HomeAdditionPlus.com. The Garage Addition Bid Sheet includes an extensive questionnaire (Request for Quote) that a homeowner can provide to prospective general contractors and subcontractors for bidding the garage addition. In addition, the Garage Addition Bid sheet also includes estimated costs and time intervals for constructing a garage addition as well as a list of key home material manufacturers. Finally, the Garage Addition Bid Sheet includes an extensive set of helpful tips and advice on making sure the garage addition is built properly and on time and budget.

All About The Mattress!

March 27, 2010 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Those of us who think that mattresses are just something to plunk ourselves on and while away the night, couldn’t be more wrong. We simply might have to rethink again. The fact is that we spend one-fourth of our lives in bed and what should demand our maximum attention often goes unnoticed- for example the mattress that we sleep on.

We make the mistake of undermining the importance of mattresses by considering them to be just another part of our furniture. But this is not so. A bad mattress can be worse than the cavity in your tooth. It can cause spinal problems, muscles aches and sleep problems. The net result would be a stressed head over an equally unhealthy body.

So be very careful about choosing the mattress where you will be spending a good proportion of your life.

There are different types of mattresses available in the market today and what we decide to buy depends solely on our needs and specifications. For some foam mattresses might be the ideal choice while you may find others swearing by a spring mattress. Waterbeds and airbeds are other popular form of mattresses with their own set of merits and demerits to follow. The reason why people don’t prefer air- beds is because they are designed for temporary sleeping rather than daily usage. Its good to have an air mattress around when you are out camping or if you have guests over at your place. As for the water -beds, they aren’t considered to be very practical either because of the weight that they carry. Many homes are not designed to take the weight of a waterbed in one place.

A very popular myth running amongst most people is that hard mattresses are better in comparison to the softer ones. But this is not necessarily true. What is more important is the consistency of the surface of the mattress. The mattress should not cause pressure points in your body and leave you feeling sore. It should feel comfortable and should be in alignment with your spine so as to avoid any unwanted pressure on your other muscles and body parts.

What Is The Right Time To Change Your Mattress?

It is very essential for the user to know when his mattress needs to be replaced. Sometimes the regular use of the mattress might leave behind the impression of your body on it. In such cases you should try rotating or turning your mattress every three months at the least. Moreover the most important signal that your mattress might give you will be its inability to help you in a good night’s sleep. That’s right- when you start feeling uncomfortable in your old mattress or if you get up every morning with a sore back you can be sure that your mattress is desperately crying out for its retirement.

If you are prepared to buy a new replacement for your mattress be sure to check it out for yourself. Lie down on it and see if you are comfortable enough. If it meets both your price as well as comfort level then you can be sure that you have made the right choice!

Bathroom Products for Remodeling Projects

March 26, 2010 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Spacious or convenient? How would you furnish some 7 square feet of bathroom space with every bathroom essentials? Will it have a tub, or would it be sporting just a shower room? Will be the bathroom dual accommodating or will the bathroom accommodate only one patron at a time? Modern bathrooms have become more conservatively spacious than in the older models often having only a lavatory and a shower but even then for some, life’s pleasantries like a tub and a sauna shouldn’t be compromised.

That’s why bathroom products for remodeling have evolved to meet the criteria for space consciousness without sacrificing comfort. Now, the bulk of the old heavy tubs are peeled away and newer designs have several features incorporated, often tagged as a combo facility that has several components. Like for instance the Wasauna Steam Shower and Whirlpool Combo WAS-2245. It is essentially a shower room tub but enclosed to trapped steam and moisture in, turning the multipurpose shower tub into an efficient sauna. It incorporates several massage jets, including along the foot to accommodate a relaxing massage bath. Features can be controlled by a digital control panel outside for obviously safe purposes, but a hands-free telephone can be accessed from within.

Sinks have gone a long way too. Because sinks and vanities are notoriously hard to aesthetically fit to any areas, newer designs have attained the ease of fitting them to almost any wall with aesthetical results. These designs can be free standing, just like a fountain, installed into a counter (a common design), or integrated into a table surface. Like the Wasauna Bathroom Vanity Table WAS-0003. It is very much like a glass table; in fact the sink is made of tempered glass. A few other vanities spark elegance more than this Wasauna design. This vanity table includes a mirror and a mini shelf. Wasauna offers two designs of the vanity tale, dual and a single capacity.

Porcelain sinks are still a popular choice to those budget-conscious, or those restrooms that are intended for the public. At mostly white or beige (since these colors are considerably sanitary looking) porcelain sinks also have gone a long way from being casual looking. Take a peek at the designs seen at victoriaplumb.com: www.victoriaplumb.com/Contemporary_toilet_sinks.html

Vintage Decor For The Kitchen

March 25, 2010 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

When it comes to redecorating, the kitchen is a favorite by far. Many consider the kitchen to be the heart of the home and is certainly the room where we spend most of our time so it makes sense to give it a cool decorator style.

One decorating style that is becoming very popular is a retro or vintage style and adding vintage decor to your kitchen can be a fun way to get a new look as well as acquire some neat collectible that you can show off to your guests.

When decorating, one should consider wall color, flooring, window treatments, furniture and, of course, accessories. To accentuate your vintage decor, you might want to consider using vintage tile on the walls or painting in vintage colors. Some popular color combinations for vintage kitchens include cream and green, red and white, pink and blue. These days even the 1970’s retro styles are popular so you might even consider going with a harvest gold or avocado green and orange color scheme.

Your window treatments can have a big affect on the look of your vintage d

Outdoor Indoor Patio Furniture

March 24, 2010 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Buying patio furniture was one of the best things I could have done for myself when I was a student. Keep in mind that I did not have a patio or even a front lawn. I got the patio furniture because I was too poor to furnish my apartment with proper in door things. It was a choice between one or two wooden chairs or a room full of patio chairs and tables.

A lot of people have done this I might add. With me it was nothing original. But in my case things did get out of hand, though I still think it was for the best. As my first year went on a lot of people took a liking to my place because the patio furniture gave it that nice relaxed, outdoorsy feel. In the dead of winter people seemed to enjoy the fact that they could come into my place, lay back on the patio furniture and have a drink.

It was after someone got me a plant that things started to escalate. Why the plant was given to me I will never know but one person liked it and then the next. This prompted a bigger plant to be brought and then one more. With all the foliage around the crowding patio furniture it truly began to look like I was living outside, or that outside was living inside.

This prompted people to add to my patio furniture a park style bench. This went against the wall where a tree was then painted. My place became a free for all and everyone was adding their own touch until my whole apartment looked like you had just walked onto a patio.

Years later I can’t sit on anyone’s patio furniture without remembering my outdoor indoor apartment.

Online Furniture Stores

March 23, 2010 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

The furniture industry, like most other industries, has gone online. Shopping online for furniture at various featured websites finds favor among customers because of the convenience of shopping from home.

It is easier to find specific stores on the web that sell furniture according to an individual customer’s taste, style preferences and requirements. Most websites provide digital images and product sample pictures, which provide a fair idea of the style and look. Store locators enable a customer to personally scrutinize the quality of the product ordered, check the durability and material used, and determine the functional aspects (comfort, storage space etc) of the ordered product. Most sites also have room planners and style guides to aid the customer in choosing the right style, kind and size of furniture depending on expectations, room size, an individual personality and taste. One can find a host of online stores with furniture of every imaginable style and type.

While shopping online for furniture one has to be careful about fake deals and other unwanted transaction hurdles and business aberrations. Most of the time, online shopping is secure if due caution is maintained. Most online stores accept credit cards. In case of any unexpected irregularities, the credit card companies can aid in sorting out money-related issues like refunds. There are also product trackers that help a customer to keep track of the whereabouts of the shipped product. It is not advisable to opt for any financing deals offered by the store without crosschecking the reputation of the store and the financial implications of the deal.

One should read the terms, conditions and other policies meticulously before embarking on the deal. It is also advisable to look for the BBB logo. The BBB (Better Business Bureau) is a non-governmental mediating organization. Most business organizations with a good name are members of this organization. It seeks to resolve disputes between the consumer and the organization or store. It is not a law-enforcing body that penalizes offenders, but it has influence

Indoor Fountain - Read This if You are Just Starting Out

March 22, 2010 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

There are many spaces inside a home where you can use an indoor water fountain. Living rooms, bedrooms, partially open spaces such as patios. Also office and hotel lobbies are also great for using this amazing accessory.

There are basically 5 types of indoor water fountains.

1) Tabletop water fountain.
2) Floor water fountain.
3) Wall mounted indoor fountain.
4) Garden Courtyard water fountain (for partially closed spaces)
5) Waterfalls (for partially closed spaces)

Depending upon the volume of space to be decorated and other accessories already used to decorate the interior space a water fountain can be selected.

What are the requirements to install a water fountain?

Before we can answer this we must first see that what are the various components of a indoor fountain. It contains a water reservoir, a submersible pump that runs on electricity, a hose pipe that carries the water from reservoir to upper level, (from where it drops down) and finally the environment or cascade through which the water falls.

The submersible water pump consumes something around 120 volts. Precaution should always be taken to see that the pump remains dipped in water all of the time. If the pump is run dry it can get damaged.

Those who have already used an indoor fountain in their homes talk about some of the following problems that can occur at some point of time during the use.

1)Noise of the pump.

Actually a silent pump can not exist but the noise can be reduced substantially if the pump rests on shock absorbent material such as cork/rubber. Both these materials are water proof hence are durable even in water.

2)Water being contaminated overtime.

This is quite a common problem. The water in reservoir at the bottom gets pumped at the top and drops down because of gravity again in the reservoir. The only loss of water is because of evaporation. The water can become unclean because of growth of algae. If the water doesn’t contain any living creatures such as fish or turtles etc. then adding little chlorine bleach to the water has shown good results with some people.

While selecting the pump for the fountain you must take care to see how much water it can lift per hour. For smaller pump this number varies from 200 to 500 liters/hour. Normally the pump which has been designed to run in water should NEVER be run dry or can get damaged.

A good water pump will also have the capacity to control the amount of water flow flowing out at the top. Depending upon the amount of water flowing out, the beauty of fountain will change. For example do you want a water fall type of fountain or a water curtain or small droplets of water like in rain. This final appearance will decide the amount of water that should flow and the pump should have that kind of mechanism to keep it in control.

The environment through which water flows can have infinite shapes and sizes. Actually sky is the limit to design the kind of environment
through which the water will flow. Ceramic is a very creative and commonly used material for constructing fully water bearable environment.
