10 Landscaping Design Ideas To Enhance Your Home Garden

January 21, 2010 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

A home garden is a place, which can give identity to your home building in a neighborhood. You can use very little creativity to enhance to look and feel of your garden so that it stands out from the rest of the gardens in the neighborhood. Here is a list of probable elements you can add to your landscaping garden so that everybody loves it and you get the credit.

1) The compound wall of the home plot defines the boundary of the garden as well. Use paintings on the wall surface (inside), that will add excitement to your garden . You can go for a theme based paintings such as nature, waterfalls, sunsets etc..

2) Use stone sculptures of actual human size. These statues greatly add a human touch to the garden and also defines a scale to the space. Everything we use in our daily lives such as clothes, kitchen utensils, office equipment, computer parts, are all always related to human measurements. If this is the case with all other objects, why exclude a garden from it.

3) Use a fountain with artificial mood creating lighting. This adds a great amount of curiosity during night.

4) Use Japanese stone lanterns instead of the normal ones. This is because stone has its own rough texture as against the smooth and fresh look and feel of the plants in a garden. This creates “hot-spots” in the garden if you plan to use light bulbs inside the stone lanterns. These stone lanterns can also be used along a pathway to define the direction of movement.

5) Design a pond that flows partially into the home building. This is a great way to seamlessly connect the interior and exterior of a home landscape.

6) If your garden has a swimming pool, then instead of having normal diving boards, be little creative and make it into the shape of a house or the person coming out of the mouth of an animal etc…Your kids will love this and will be remembered whoever visits your garden.

7) Create private semi-open patios in your garden. This is a great place to sit around and chat with your loved ones and also can be used as a small deck during a small party.

8) If you love pets, then try rabbits, ducks along with a small pond, in the backyard. These pets have very fresh colors and add great amount of liveliness in the garden.

9) If possible plants flowerings trees with fragrance. This is a free and absolutely amazing way to keep your garden fresh.

10) Create levels in your garden to distinguish various areas as per the function of the garden. A leveled garden always creates interest and curiosity.

If you have read this article completely you can see I have hardly talked about plats and their species in landscaping. So landscaping design is also about using creativity with materials and their finishes. I hope this article helps you to start thinking creatively about your home garden and generate more unique ideas.

5 Things to Do Before Starting A Kitchen Design Project

January 19, 2010 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

In deciding on what to do in hiring a kitchen designer a well thought out plan is necessary for any kitchen design project to be successful.

A good kitchen designer should be able to work with you to create the design that will both fit your desires and needs and that squares with your budget.

1. How Much Are You Willing To Spend?

Level with the designer just how much you will be willing to spend on your kitchen design project.
Let the designer know just what you would feel comfortable spending. This way you can insure that the designer and contractor will have a clear direction on where to go with the project and not go overboard. They will have a good idea of the limits when drawing up plans and selecting materials.

2. How Much Time Are You Willing To Devote?

You need to consider what your personal needs are and if you will be able to work around the necessary construction in your kitchen. By consulting with an experienced kitchen designer you can get a good idea of how long your kitchen design project will take by providing a timeline that your family can plan around.

3. What Style Are You Planning For Your Kitchen Design Project?

You want to give the kitchen designer as much information as possible. You need to do as much research as possible before your meeting with a kitchen designer.

First you should consult with design magazines and catalogs to get an idea of what style and design elements you would like to see for your kitchen. To compile more ideas visit kitchen design showrooms, check out products and design on the internet and take notes. What are your likes and dislikes regarding color and styles. Make a scrapbook with clips from the magazines and catalogs, as well as examples of materials and design elements you would like to see in the kitchen. Use these to show the kitchen designer what your vision is for the new kitchen. Also bring a list of questions for your kitchen designer.

4. How Do You Use Your Kitchen?

You need to be prepared for questions that a kitchen designer will ask you when you first meet with him. Among the questions that you need to ask yourself before talking to your kitchen designer are:
Will you be doing a lot of entertaining with family and friends? Is your family busy during the week with lots of activities? You should also fine out what other family members have in the way of ideas.

5. How To Prepare For Your Kitchen Design Project?

You will need to prepare for the disruption that will be caused by your kitchen design project. But with the right planning you can make the project run as smoothly and a quickly as possible.
You need to make sure that the kitchen design project area and the living area are separate for both safety reasons and to stay out of the way of the contractor and his crew. You might have to set up a temporary kitchen in another room of the house. What time of the year you schedule a kitchen design project can make it easier on everyone since in the warmer months it is possible to eat and cook outdoors.

Conservatories

January 18, 2010 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Home conservatories has become one of the modern day needs to maintain a pleasant living atmosphere and it is also one of the major facts considered for a peaceful and pleasant atmosphere. There are many ways of deciding the conservatories based on the peoples mentality and mind and it also gives the owner an opportunity to create the life he needs. So every care should be taken in choosing the right and relevant kind of conservatories for a sophisticated and thought provoking atmosphere.

The good thing about conservatory is it will give you enjoyment and liberty to your home. There are several styles of conservatories that are available for a person to choose based on his taste, mentalities and ideas. It may be of a general modern style or a traditional style or even a classical normal style. The major aspects for deciding conservatories depends upon the area that is going to be utilized, the legal approval, roofing styles and there are even much more aspects that will have to be taken into account before launching the project.

The drainage factors must also be considered since there should be no effluent wastes formed in the course of maintaining the conservatories, moreover the roofing types such as transparent roofing or translucent roofing will also have to be discussed and finalized. After deciding all the factors, then comes the brick work. The cost of the roofing may also be considered and based on the cost, we may even alter the roofing material such as PVC - U externally capped roofs or aluminum roofs and there are even other kinds of roofs to prevent the effects of sunlight. The next vital point to discuss after the roofing is the glass which is going to be incorporated for the roofing such as whether we are going to use any sort of energy efficient polycarbonate sheet which is normally a light weight or if we are going to us glass.

So on building a conservatory, we have to be very careful in determining the exact methodologies that we are going to use and also the material that we going to incorporate and in a nutshell, proper planning will pay fruitful results in building a conservatory. Our conservatory should be hugely attractive and should give a warm welcome whenever an outsider visits our house. So the bottom line is that a conservatory adds value only if it is designed and constructed well with proper planning and using right kind of materials.

Proper Handling and Use of Pesticides

January 17, 2010 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

This Article deals with the problems involved in Using and Handling Pesticides.

Sometimes, even with good lawn care practices, weather conditions or other factors can cause pest problems to develop. Pesticides can help control many lawn pests. But pesticides have risks as well as benefits, and it’s important to use them properly.

The chemicals we call pesticides include insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides. These products are designed to kill or control pest insects, weeds, and fungal diseases. Pesticides can be very effective. But don’t be tempted to rely solely on pesticides as a quick-fix solution to any lawn problem. Serious, ongoing pest problems are often a sign that your lawn is not getting everything it needs. In other words, the pests may be a symptom of an underlying problem. You need to correct the underlying problem to reduce the chance that the pest will reappear.

All pesticides are toxic to some degree. This means they can pose some risk to you, to your children and pets, and to any wildlife that venture onto your lawn, especially if these chemicals are overused or carelessly applied. Pesticides can also kill earthworms and other beneficial organisms, disrupting the ecological balance of your lawn.

Use pesticides to minimize pests, not eradicate them. Eradication is often impossible and unnecessary.
Be sure you have accurately identified the pest so you can choose the best pesticide for the job and use it most effectively. Obtain professional advice from your county extension agent or a local expert.
Spot treat whenever possible. In most cases, it isn’t necessary to treat the whole lawn with pesticides if the problem is confined to certain areas. Spraying more than necessary is wasteful and can be environmentally damaging.

Store pesticides out of children’s reach in a locked cabinet or garden shed.
When Spraying, protect your skin, your eyes and your lungs. Wear gloves, long sleeves, long pants, eye protection and a respirator.
Wash this clothing separately before using it again.
Read the entire label and follow its instructions as well as any local and state regulations.
Keep children and pets away from pesticides, and make sure no one goes on a treated lawn for at least the time prescribed by the pesticide label.

If you have questions about a pesticide, call EPA’s tollfree National Pesticide Telecommunications Network (1-800-858-7378). For general information on minimizing pesticide risks, call or write EPA for a free copy of the Citizen’s Guide to Pesticides. The Basic Steps to Bamboo Gardening

January 16, 2010 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Bamboo is an interesting plant to grow. It adds character to a gardening display. There are some basic steps to successfully bamboo gardening. These steps are outlined below.

1. Choose a spot that has excellent drainage. Bamboo gardening involves letting the dirt dry out between watering. The soil should not appear clumpy or clay-like. Fertilizer can be added later to make a richer soil.

2. Clear out an area that is about one foot larger than the space needed for the amount of bamboo being planted.

3. The hole should be dug to the same size as the pit the bamboo comes in.

4. Planting the bamboo requires attention to detail. It is important for the buds not to be disturbed during this process. It is also important when filling in the hole that no air remains around the root ball. Fertilizer should also be added to the soil at this point. The plant should be planted at a depth where the top of the existing soil is only slightly below the ground level.

5. The bamboo should then be watered thoroughly and mulch should be laid thickly. Any type of mulch can be used in bamboo gardening.

6. Maintenance depends on the climate and the soil condition. As mentioned, bamboo likes to grow in soil that dries between watering. It may be necessary for the gardener to check the soil often to determine a watering schedule. Bamboo gardening also requires thinning. After the first gardening year the bamboo should be thinned by removing older bamboo. After this the garden can be thinned as needed to separate clumps and get rid of old bamboo.

Bamboo gardening is not too difficult. The mulch should help with watering needs and thinning is simple. Other than that bamboo gardening requires nothing more than the gardener enjoying their work.

Watching Your Children’s Garden Grow

January 15, 2010 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Start some gardening traditions with your kids. Give them their own garden patch and a spot to dig. Children love getting their hands dirty and watching things grow.

Be sure to buy good quality, child sized gardening tools. Plastic toy versions just won’t hold up to the task. You will also need children’s gloves and a watering can.

Mark off the garden area and turn the soil. Kids can help break up any lumps with their hands. Work in some organic compost.

Choose seeds that will grow quickly. Small children get impatient if their plants take too long to sprout. Radishes, Snapdragons, Cosmos, and Sunflowers will all germinate quickly. Carrots and strawberries are also easy to grow– and yummy to eat.

Large seeds like beans and Morning Glories are easy for small fingers to push into the ground. You can start your seeds indoors in an eggshell carton. When the seedlings are an inch high, tear off the egg carton, and leaving the soil intact, transplant the seedlings outside.

Or, try placing beans on a wet paper towel inside a zip top bag. Tape the bag to a sunny window and wait for the seeds to germinate. I can remember, as a child, checking my beans every morning before school. The first shoots appeared to my delight and we carefully transplanted the beans outdoors.

Make garden markers by painting small rocks. This will help kids keep track of their selections.

Make it fun!

Grow a sunflower house by planting the sunflowers in a circle with a space in the middle big enough for your kids to hide. Be sure to leave room for a door.

Grow a spaghetti garden. Plant herbs such as basil, oregano, rosemary, and parsley. My kids love to snip fresh herbs. They stuff their pockets full of scented “spaghetti” herbs.

Share your garden with butterflies and hummingbirds. Zinnias, Verbena, and Cosmos are butterfly favorites. Hummingbirds love the nectar from Nasturtium and Lantana, and Hollyhocks.

Children love to pick up bugs and worms. Poke holes in the top of an old jar. Add some dirt and a few, new found specimens. Be sure to release the critters back into nature after a few hours.

Arm your kids with cameras to take photos throughout the summer. They will enjoy remembering the fruits of their labor. And, the pictures will help your budding gardener plan for next year.

Happy planting. And, don’t forget to pick a few bouquets for mom.

The Way to Buy Furniture is Changing

January 14, 2010 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

“Have you seen the changes in furniture?” Think about how something as simple as buying a new piece of furniture can change how a person feels about their home. Now that ready-to-assemble furniture (commonly called RTA) is so widely available, and the prices so much lower than ready-made, it is opening a whole new demographic for being able to buy quality furniture pieces.

“Are People Happy to Buy RTA Furniture?” You bet they are! To be able to furnish a house, apartment, office, dorm room, etc., without breaking the bank has resulted in an enormous increase in online RTA sales. RTA furniture is one of the fastest growing segments of the furniture market internationally.

“How about the Quality of RTA?” Design, engineering, production, testing and packaging are done in-house. Each component of every product is carefully engineered to be produced with minimal handling, without compromising quality, function and value. Testing is done to meet and exceed National Safe Test “Drop Test” standards. Products are typically made from a combination of “engineered woods.” These materials are bonded together with a synthetic resin, in a process under high heat and pressure to make a very stable, environmentally friendly product. The result is dense, strong panels, which are then laminated with durable, attractive finishes. Better materials can be afforded when the buyer saves on expensive shipping costs by buying items that come flat-packaged. Consumers have demanded current design trends as well as durability. And while standards have increased tremendously, a buyer’s pocketbook still forces them to watch the price. Younger buyers want to create stylish rooms that mesh with the latest technology, i.e., slim and modern designs well known to RTA easily win out over heavier and costlier furnishings.

“Is it easy to Assemble?” Yes. Each unit comes with detailed assembly instructions and one person can assemble most things in well under an hour. Surveys indicate approximately 50% of the assemblers are female customers and most find the assembly instructions very easy to follow. Oftentimes, sales & marketing employees assemble and write the instructions to make sure we provide enough common sense directions.

“What is Available in RTA Furniture?” Every room in the home is a candidate for RTA furniture. Over the years, the industry has evolved and you will find bedroom sets, tables, desk and office furniture, entertainment furniture, and dining room furniture. There is more on the way.

Now you are just as likely to find a designer look bedroom set at your online etailer as at an uptown specialty furniture store. RTA makes a stylishly furnished home possible for almost everyone.

Clean Leather Furniture - Tips from a Pro

January 13, 2010 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

“How should I clean my leather furniture?” It’s a common question from our clients.

As a leather furniture repair and restoration specialist, I hear over and over again from my clients that they have been using saddle soap on their fine leather upholstery. After all, it seems like the right thing to use, as certainly saddles are made from leather.

Despite what it seems like, it’s a mistake! You see, leather intended for saddles and leather intended for furniture are processed very differently.

Saddles are made from heavy-duty leather which is vegetable tanned to withstand the harsh environment of the outdoors. It’s tough, highly durable leather and can stand up to the use of chemically harsh leather cleaners, like saddle soap.

Upholstery leather is processed differently. Using chromium tanning chemistry, the end result is soft, supple leather that is much more sensitive to harsh cleaners like saddle soap. Here’s the reason why.

Think about your own skin. Would you wash your face with a strong household cleaner? Certainly it would clean your face, however the drying and chaffing effect it has on your skin is not desirable, particularly with repeated use. The same is true for upholstery leather. The fact is that upholstery leather is acidic. It has a pH of 4.5 - 5. Harsh cleaners are highly alkaline. Consequently a chemical reaction occurs in the leather that breaks down its fibrous structure. Therefore it’s important to use leather cleaners that are chemically engineered (pH balanced) specifically for upholstery leather.

And, then there is the question of the type of leather you have. Leather cleaners are not appropriate for all types and grades of leather. For example, suede, brushed leathers, fine lamb or calf skin are aesthetically delicate and should be treated very carefully. Leather cleaners or conditioners may stain such delicate leather.

Generally speaking, leather furniture doesn’t need a lot of attention. A simple maintenance procedure is to wipe the piece down with a lightly dampened cloth at the same frequency you dust the wood furniture in your home. Then, periodically (every 3 - 4 months) apply a quality leather conditioner to instill moisture into the leather. Regularly conditioning your leather will prolong the life of the piece. If you feel the need to “clean” your leather furniture, be sure to use a pH-balanced cleaner appropriate for your type of leather. If you have questions, contact a leather professional.

Just remember, saddle soap will remove manure, clumps of dirt, and the grime from a saddle after being out on the trail. Hopefully your furniture is not subjected to the same environment. To prolong the life of your fine leather upholstery, use leather care products that are chemically engineered specifically for upholstery leather.

Landscaping Tips Koi Pond Aeration Needed for Healthy Fish

January 12, 2010 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Fish keepers know that koi pond aeration is an important element in a healthy garden pool. Animals need oxygen, and fish are no exception. Koi fish literally breathe the oxygen that is dissolved into their water. A lack of oxygen in the water is the number one reason for koi to die unexpectedly. To get that needed oxygen into the water, a system for koi pond aeration is needed.

Two factors affect the amount of oxygen in the water. Allowing algae to grow in the pond depletes oxygen and having too many fish for the size of the pond does the same. Either of these conditions require koi pond aeration be supplemented.

Waterfalls are a common addition to the backyard pond. Besides being pleasant to hear and to look at, the tumbling of the water increases the amount of oxygen in it. Waterfalls are a useful part of koi pond aeration. When the weather warms up, though, a small waterfall is not enough to provide adequate oxygen for your fish.

In the summer, especially if the temperature goes over 80 degrees F., koi pond aeration becomes very important. Large waterfalls, fountains, and other ways of keeping water moving, should be used day and night when it is hot.

There are also bubbling devices that can be placed in koi ponds to provide aeration if installing a waterfall is not practical. Especially in the bottom of the pool, koi pond aeration is a necessity, since this area is farthest from the surface. An air pump is needed to use these bubbling devices, which include airstones and rings.

Airstones are ceramic stones that attach to the hose from an air pump. The pump pushes air through the porous stone, which forces bubbles through the water. The stones are natural looking and sit on the floor of the pool, providing koi pond aeration where it is most needed. Several airstones can be used with the same pump.

An air ring also sits on the pond floor. It provides several outlets, through which the air bubbles up, providing koi pond aeration. Stones, rings, and electric waterfalls should be left on throughout the night for the koi to receive a healthy oxygen supply.

Carlo Morelli writes for http://www.onlineTips.org, where you can read more about koi pond designs and ultraviolet pond filters.
