Monsoon Home Care Tips

January 31, 2010 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Given that the monsoon season lasts for a few months in India, there are many aspects that need to be looked into while considering home care needs. In fact, it is a good idea to get a professional to do an inspection of your home, old or new, prior to the monsoon and ensure that you find and fix the problems that keep recurring. Once they have been fixed, after the monsoon, you can plunge into the decoration aspect.

1. Seepage in foundation walls can be due to a leaking downspout. These problems should be corrected before the monsoon. The causes can be many, so corrective action can only be taken when you have determined the cause of the problem. Stop gap measures do not really help, as the problem is likely to recur the next year.

2. Termites are a major problem wherever water leakage or high humidity levels are a feature. They would require professionals to do a really complete job, but you would need to check the whole house for any signs of termite infestation, which tend to increase during the rainy season.

3. Some easy do-it-yourself remedies for woodwork. Put Camphor in your cupboards, it takes away the moisture and protects your clothes. Neem leaves are also effective against silver fish, which are a common problem in the rainy season. Cloves are an equally effective remedy.

4. Hardwood floors need maintenance during the rainy season. Make sure they are free from moisture and wax them to protect them. Moisture content in hardwood floors tends to make them warp.

5. Carpets, especially wall-to-wall carpets need to be vacuumed regularly with cleaners that will take away not only the dirt but also the moisture that seeps into the fibers. A good carpet cleaner will also keep them from getting a musty smell. Rugs should be rolled up during the rainy season, as they just get dirty if you use them. Ideally if you can wrap them properly in polyethylene sheets they are saved from water damage and insect infestation as well.

6. Waterproofing of the roof is essential before the onset of monsoon. Check that the drains are not blocked with leaves. Ensure that water is directed away from the foundation. Check the underside of roofs for leakage or water condensation.

7. Walls need to be checked for breakages and seepage. The exterior masonry should be repaired well before the onset of the rains. Paint on the interior walls should be checked for flaking.

8. Ventilation is an important aspect of home care during monsoons. Make sure there is enough cross-ventilation and fresh air coming into your home, otherwise the humidity levels will cause a general feeling of dampness.

9. Tile joints in bathrooms should be checked and kept sealed, especially in apartment complexes.

10. Keeping areas clean can prevent mildew and by ensuring that the moisture content in the air is kept as low as possible. Air conditioners and dehumidifiers are a good way to reduce the humidity levels inside a home, but the best way to protect upholstery and rugs is sunlight. A good sunning is the best way to keep moisture from creating problems.

11. An investment you can make this year is a tumble dryer. In a country with such an extended monsoon, we should use tumble dryers, not only to ensure that our clothes do not smell because of moisture trapped in the fibres, but hanging clothes inside the house to dry is one of the reasons why the moisture content in so many homes is so many homes is so high. While its wet outside, you must think of every conceivable way to keep the inside of your home DRY. That solves half the problems that are associated with a prolonged rainy season.

12. Any major work in the home should be done either before the monsoon or after. That is the first basic rule of home d

Adjustable Bed Mattresses Are Great For All People With A Bad Back

January 30, 2010 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

All adjustable bed mattresses are made in modern, state-of-the-art plants using advanced manufacturing techniques. The same expensive parts and manufacturing methodology, quality control and care used to manufacture high priced adjustable hospital beds and dental chairs are used in the construction of adjustable bed beds. Component parts are carefully assembled and rigorously tested for long life and reliability.

The bed’s high-strength steel frame is protected from rust and corrosion by dipping in non-toxic lead free enamel paint and also the qualities of the adjustable bed mattresses. The mattresses are constructed using a hot glue laminating process. This technique is designed to prevent mattress components from shifting and interfering with one another during the thousands of flexes adjustable mattresses go through during a lifetime of use.

The mattress has a 312 coil count spring (for Model 1 Full/Double size industry standard bed). The unit contains 312 five turn oil-tempered coil springs that are tied together using a double-knotted tying process with oil-tempered steel helical wire. The adjustable mattress is engineered to bend! Next, a flexing insulator, polypropylene net, is placed over this spring system to isolate it from adjoining layers. A garneted synthetic fiber pad is placed on top of the flexing insulator, then multiple layers of high quality non-allergenic foam cushioning are added. Next a decorator cover of the finest ticking available, a natural cotton & polyester blend product produced to exacting adjustable standards is attached. A hot glue laminating process is used to attach the synthetic fiber pad, layers of foam and overlying ticking in order to extend the life of the mattress and enhance mattress comfort.

The adjustable bed mattresses construction techniques result in a superb dual sided, reversible, dual-density mattress — luxuriously firm with maximum support on one side, and a plush/soft side with almost 2 additional inches of luxurious fill materials including 1 1/2″ of specialized convoluted on the other. All mattresses, regardless of the adjustable bed model they are made for, meet adjustable demanding specifications for comfort, shape retention and support.

Catherine has been a salesperson for a bedding store for the last 15 years and enjoys helping customers select the right products for maximum comfort and support. Come to http://www.mbwl.net to get free advice on evaluating mattresses and tips on how to buy a mattress.

Plan Before Buying Rose Bushes

January 29, 2010 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

So, you have decided to plant rose bushes in your yard or on your patio, porch or balcony. Now all you have to do is go out and buy some bushes and plant them. Right? Wrong!!

There are several things that you have to decide before buying:

1. Where are you planning on planting?

2. Are you going to plant in the ground or in containers?

3. Do you want roses that are scented or unscented?

4. Do you want bushes, trees, climbers, vining or do you want them to grow into a hedge?

5. Do you want large, medium, small or miniature blooms?

6. Do you want roses for cutting?

7. What colors go best with your garden, patio, porch or balcony?

There are several types of roses, among them are:

Hybrid teas bloom frequently, are hardy, come in a wide range of colors, are well sented and are good for cutting for vases. The size of the blooms and the length of the stem depends on how they are pruned. They make the best long stem roses for cutting.

Hybrid perpetuals are seldom planted today as they have a limited color range and normally bloom less frequently. They are, however, quite hardy and have large well scented blooms. The “American Beauty” rose is from this category.

Grandifloras are a cross between hybrid teas and floribundas. The flowers are the same size and shape as hybrid teas, however they usually have an abundance of blooms on each stem. These roses are very popular for growing in containers.

Floribundas have slightly smaller flowers but are hardier, have a longer growing season in cold climates and yeild large numbers of flowers.

Polyanthas are small averaging just 18 inches in height. They are very hardy and produce large clusters of small flowers.

Miniatures average between 6 and 12 inches in height, carry small one inch or less blooms, are hardy and require little care. These make very good balcony container roses.

Climbers come in several types, Ramblers which are hardy, fast growing and can develope canes up to 20 feet long. Pillars are slower growing upright palnts that are well suited for growing on posts. Trailers are low growing easy to maintain plants good for covering banks and walls. Large Flowered Climbers are slower growing but have more showey flowers and are good for growing against fences and low walls. Hybrid Teas , Floribundas and Polyanthas can sometimes become climbers and have the same characteristics as the bushes.

Tree Roses can be developed from any type of rose. They are made by grafting a bush onto a long thick trunk. These look great on a patio or porch.

Shrub Roses are normally small, hardy fairly continuesly blooming bushes that can be used as hedge (hedges can grow to 5 or 6 feet and provide inexpensive privacy and color), thicket and trellis (trellis roses can add a beautiful accent to a yard or home entryway and can be made into an arch) roses. There are even varieties that can be used as ground cover on embankments or planted in hanging pots.

Today roses come in hundreds of varieties with new varieties being developed every year and in an almost limitless number of colors and color variations. It has been my experience, however, that usually the darker the color the heavier the scent. Most white roses seem to have no scent at all.

If you choose the right roses for the right place you can add beauty and elegance to any garden, patio, porch or balcony without spending large amounts of money or time.

Discount Granite Countertops

January 28, 2010 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

The beauty and warmth of granite makes it an ideal countertop material for aesthetic and practical purposes in most any kitchen. In addition to its natural strength, granite is a very beautiful stone that adds color and warmth to a room. Although granite countertops are quite popular, a homeowner may not want to spend the premium price for granite, or may live in an area subject to limitations on resale values. In cases like this, discount granite countertops are an attractive option.

Granite is relatively expensive, with prices starting at $60 a square foot. The majority of the cost is not in the stone itself, but in the quarrying, transportation, polishing and installation. Typically homeowners will contribute labor on improvements to reduce costs, but installing granite countertops should be left to the professionals. However, a large marketplace with numerous suppliers and substantial discounts creates a price range that allows anyone to have granite countertops in their home.

Granite suppliers will typically have three or four groupings of granite to choose from. The suppliers will refer to their groupings or “tiers” by numbers. The first tier will include the premium products that sell for the highest price. A stone is grouped based on several criteria, including country of origin, color, veins or patterns, thickness of the slab, amount of soft minerals in the stone, and fashion trends. Granite from lower tiers has the same beauty and utility as the slabs in the upper groupings. Additionally, stones in a lower tier could be harder than some stones in a first tier, so it pays to get out and look around.

While granite from the lower tiers exhibits the hardness granite is known for, the presence of softer minerals may require additional cabinet supports or a penetrating sealant. Thinner cut stone may be a little less than two centimeters instead of a recommended three; if so, the installer can provide additional stability by laminating it to plywood backing. Discount granite suppliers will typically deal with a thinner cut stone, and many suppliers now carry stones that are intentionally cut thin and laminated at the quarry.

Another option would be having granite tile countertops. Tiles are fashioned from the same desirable stone as solid granite countertops. All elements of the granite remain the same, with exception to the size of the granite slabs. Granite tiles, while needing special care, can be installed (with the right tools and preparation) by a homeowner.

Granite tiles are laid in the same manner as ceramic tile, with consideration for the additional thickness of the stone. All of the countertops in the kitchen can be covered in tile, or a few large tiles can be inlaid to other countertop surfaces such as Formica. Strategically placed twenty-four inch granite tiles inlaid near the range or oven allow for searing hot pans to be placed on an otherwise delicate countertop. A thirty-six inch granite tile set into the counter work area serves as an excellent surface for rolling dough and working with confectionery.

The homeowner on a tight budget has many options for to providing a touch of luxury with discount granite countertops. Today, many manufacturers will fabricate the countertops in the country of origin, which reduces the costs attributed to waste and shipping fees. Although prefabricated countertops are made with thinner slices of stone, they are laminated to plywood for strength. Prefabricated pieces are also cut to fit basic lengths and L-shaped counter layouts of most kitchens, allowing for lower costs related to installation. Another benefit with prefabricated pieces is that the country of origin will typically have lower wages for labor, which greatly saves on installation costs.

Discount granite countertops have proven to be a wise investment for any homeowner. Clever design and planning allow homeowners to enjoy the benefits of granite without the traditional large expense.

Ten Convenience Built-Ins That’ll Help Seniors And The Disabled Live Independently

January 27, 2010 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Planning to remodel, repair or build a new home? Looking for some
innovative, unusual but powerful universal design features? We
can help! We started collecting over 1,000 uncommon, affordable
convenience built-ins in 1998, when we first began writing books and
consulting to help people have truly extraordinary but affordable
homes. Here are some of our favorite ideas that’ll change your life via
how they enable independent living. Add any of these to your next
project, and you’ll be on your way toward creating a home that’s truly
beyond the ordinary!

Motion-sensor faucets. These are especially handy where hands will
often be dirty or full. They also deliver water at a preset temperature that
kids or slow-to-react family members may appreciate. No more risk of
getting scalded!

A single-lever faucet control, for ease in adjusting water flow and
temperature with one hand. (It’s especially inconvenient to have two-
fisted, separate hot and cold controls at the kitchen sink.) This can help
you reduce wasted hot water, can be visually marked so family
members know where to position it for safe hot water temperatures, and
is easy to use after arthritis has started to affect your fingers and hands.

A central vacuum system. Its parts are not as heavy to push as most
freestanding vacuum cleaners.

A garbage disposal activated by a pressure-button switch that’s inches
away from the faucet, so it’s accessible without your bending to open a
cabinet or walking several steps to flip a switch.

Well-planned task and reading lighting that doesn’t create shadows.
Don’t forget lights that illuminate countertops or are mounted under
upper cabinets.

Lots of electrical outlets for your holiday decorations, both indoors and
outside, so everything plugs in nearby. No point in having the confusion
or hazards of extension cords, powerstrips or overloaded circuits.

Magnetic drawer and cabinet locks that release and latch via a single
remote-control button that controls an entire room or outdoor area. This
is the least awkward and most secure type of childproof lock we’ve
seen, especially if you mount the control unit high on a wall where
adults can easily see and reach it while kids cannot. Grandparents with
arthritis will especially applaud this system, compared to the common
plastic door locks that require considerable dexterity to release. (These
magnetic locks also secure drawers or cabinets in overnight guestrooms
that you use when your guests are gone, or in any rental properties you
own and store some possessions in.)

Wall-mounted intercoms in every room and outdoor living area (don’t
forget the garage), for talking to anyone on your property without having
to physically walk over to them. This also eliminates using what might be
dirty or full hands to dial and hold a cell phone you might use to call
people elsewhere in the house.

A light switch or knee-level motion sensor at the top and bottom of
every stairway that controls adequate lighting from above. Motion
sensors are especially handy wherever your hands are often too full to
easily reach for a switch. That light from above is more important for
people with vision problems than light from fixtures that are down at the
stair level.

A bathroom near the family entrance for quick cleanups for limiting the
mess that gets tracked inside when someone’s coming home dirty. It’ll
also prevent rushing through the house and risking a fall when
nature calls while you’re working outside or just arriving home.

The Impact Of Beds On Bedroom Design

January 26, 2010 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

In years past, beds were not considered to be an element that factored into bedroom design, more just a place to lay your head, although the bed could be dressed to match whatever style had been chosen for the bedroom.

Times have changed and with the return of bedsteads or frame beds, the bed is now an element that factors in quite highly in bedroom design. The range of styles, colours, fabrics and materials that today’s modern beds are manufactured from go to enhance and work in synergy with all bedroom design plans.

The decision of the type of bed to purchase in relation to design can be broken down into three steps:

The aesthetic of the room.

Deciding on the aesthetic of a room or the way that it looks is not as difficult as it may seem at first. In most cases you will already have a good source of inspiration from the other rooms in the house, but let’s say for arguments case that it is a blank canvas. In that case the world is your oyster as there are so many places to draw ideas from;

-The internet

-Interior design book/magazines

-Ideal home exhibition type shows

-New property development show houses (always a favorite of mine)

-Furniture retail showrooms (you don’t always have to shop)

-Friends and relative’s houses

Once you have got your inspiration for how the room is going to look you need next to plan how the bed is going fit in the room.

Where to position the bed.

This can be something that gets overlooked at this stage and can result in being quite costly if other purchases are made such as furniture without this in mind. It is therefore important that before purchasing of any bedroom furniture takes place, consideration is given to the following.

Size of bed - will there be sufficient space around the bed to meet your requirements i.e. opening wardrobe doors, doors, getting changed round the bed etc etc.

Position of bed - have you planned on buying bunk beds that the steps will only go on one side and thus will only go on one wall or a captain’s bed with the same problem.

Height of the bed - you may have taken into consideration the length and width of the bed, but what about height? This is not a problem for about 98% of beds, but is a big consideration when buying a four poster bed. Have you measured the height of the room and will that four poster fit in term of height?

We have so far worked out the style and limitations of the room in which you are going to house your bed, but there is one last consideration to take into account before you part with any of your hard earned cash. That final consideration is what you use your bedroom for or “How do you live in your bedroom”

How do you live in your bedroom?

As mentioned in the introduction bedrooms have become a multifunctional space, and these days are used as offices, somewhere to watch TV, listen to music or a quiet place to read or get away from the grind. All of these are key components that need to be considered when deciding on the type of bed that you will buy.

It is now time to go and purchase that dream bed. Now that you have followed the steps above you should be confident that the purchasing decision will be a calculated one, and one made from consideration as opposed to impulse. By using the rest of this guide as a would be “bed purchasing bible”, you will feel at ease when confronted with “jargon” and “terminology”, and most of all you will be in the driving seat when it comes deciding on the type of bed for you!

In summary; a bed is the centerpiece of any bedroom and time and consideration should be spent on the whole process of planning and choosing the bed that will be suited to your requirements. As mentioned in the introduction “a decision to buy a bed should have the same amount of time and effort spent on it as purchasing a car”, if this is followed, and in conjunction with the advice from this guide, you will find yourself making a purchasing decision that will not just enhance the style and functionality of a bedroom, but will also result in a comfortable nights sleep.

Ten Things You Need To Know Before Hiring A Remodeling Contractor

January 25, 2010 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

1)Are you licensed? Make sure your contractor is properly licensed. In the State of Delaware, all contractors MUST be either certified by the State (if they have a statewide license), or registered with the State (if they have a countywide license). Anyone can say they are licensed. Make the contractor prove it by either showing you the license or giving you a copy of it. Remember to check the expiration date, and the county if It’s a countywide license. Being licensed is the law. If a contractor cannot produce a valid license, DON’T HIRE HIM!

If you live in a townhouse, villa, or high rise condominium building with four or more
units, only a Building Contractor or General Contractor are permitted to perform remodeling work. Do not hire a Residential Contractor; he would be operating outside of his license. Furthermore, hire a specialty contractor (trim, carpentry, drywall, glazing, aluminum, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, roofing, etc.) to do only the type of work the license specifies.

If you have any questions or doubts, call the Delaware Department of Business and Professional Regulation, or the New Castle County Construction Industry licensing board.

2. Do you carry general liability insurance? Make sure your contractor carries general liability insurance. This type of insurance protects your property in case of damage caused by the contractor and/or his employees. The insurance company will pay for the cost of replacing and/or repairing any damage that occurs.

Anyone can say they are insured. Make the contractor prove it by having their insurance company FAX or mail to you a certified copy of his insurance with you named as the certificate holder.

3. Will you provide me with a written lien waiver? Your contractor should provide you with a written lien waiver at the end of the job. This is a legal document, which says you the homeowner have paid the contractor in full for the services rendered and the contractor waives his right to place a mechanic’s lien on your property. If during the course of construction you receive any Notice to Owner documents from material suppliers or sub-contractors, it would be prudent to ask the contractor for a Final Release of Lien from each one prior to paying the contractor his final draw. This protects you in case the contractor doesn’t pay his material suppliers or sub

How to Install a Ceiling Fan - A Simple Guide

January 24, 2010 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

A Complete manual on how to install a Ceiling Fan may take more than just an article; it may all even take up an entire booklet. Let me just give you a simple, no-nonsense essential guide in installing a ceiling fan. Anyway, your ceiling fan manual will do the detailed explaining for you.

Speaking of a ceiling fan manual, all ceiling fans come with a manual (especially the new ones). The manual will cover the topics on how to assemble the fan and how to install a ceiling fan properly. The first thing you have to do read your manual carefully. Every kind of ceiling fan has a different manual so you also have to make sure that you are reading the manual that is designed for the ceiling fan that you will install. After which, prepare some necessary tools for your ceiling fan installation such as screw drivers, a step ladder, wire strippers, circuit testers and a drill. Next is to follow the instructions on how to assemble the ceiling fan. Then after the assembled ceiling fan is all set, do not forget to SWITCH OFF the electricity on the main circuit panel or the area where you will be working on. This is very important because you should be working without electricity flowing to prevent electrocution. Before installing a ceiling fan, be sure that you first observe this safety precaution.

Once done with the ceiling fan assembly and the turning off of the electrical supply, you will then need to work on ceiling fan installation itself. This phase includes the wiring. You should be able to determine which ceiling fan wires go with your house wires. The basic principle when working with wires is that you just have to match colors. For example, ceiling fans typically have black wires and these black wires normally go with the black wires of your main circuit and so on and so forth. The only complication you might encounter is when you circuit has become a little complex with the addition of the light fixtures. But no need to worry though, the manual should thoroughly cover that topic too as it is still a part of how to install a ceiling fan.

After the wirings and after abiding by the manual on how to install a ceiling fan, be sure to never forget to tighten screws and attach appropriate washers to prevent the fan from falling or wobbling. After making sure that all everything is in place, from the fan’s blades to the wirings and to screws, you can now get ready to turn on your ceiling fan and enjoy the benefits it brings.

Antiques - 17th Century Furniture

January 23, 2010 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

It is rare to find furniture pre-16th Century anywhere other than in a museum. It seems that collectors have only been able to obtain pieces from the Tudor period (1485-1600) onwards and even these are relatively small in number.

Until the middle of the 17th Century, furniture was fairly simple, made of oak with peg joins. Some items were painted or inlaid, but the d

Inspiring Home Designs

January 22, 2010 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

So when you redesign your home, what exactly should you do to it? If you’re short on inspiration, here are a few ideas to get you started.

The place where many people like to really go to town with their design ideas is in babies’ and children’s rooms - you can paint them bright colours, do imaginative pictures of fantasy environments, draw pictures of the child’s favourite characters from books and TV, and so much more besides. If you do this, why not let the child join in with the painting and show you what they want, with you just being there to help make their decoration dreams come true. However, one thing to be careful of is to keep redecorating their room as they get older - you don’t want them to be embarrassed to bring around friends when they’re a teenager because of their babyishly coloured room.

Another idea could be to make an ‘outdoors’ house, taking inspiration from your garden in how to design your home. This means lots of greens and blues, lots of plants, outdoor fragrances, lots of windows - a real outdoor feel indoors.

Indeed, the best way to design a home yourself is often to just pick a theme and take it as far as it will go. I know a couple with a ’space house’, complete with portraits of rockets and black ceilings with painted stars - it sounds silly, but it’s really interesting to look at. Whatever you’re passionate about, make your house show it.

Don’t forget, though, that redecorating doesn’t have to be all about tearing things down and buying new stuff. You can get a long way with a few posters, ornaments, or just reorganising or repainting your furniture. You really don’t need to break the bank and hire a handyman to get your ideal home, as a little work can go a long way.
