Buying a Wood Stove

October 21, 2009 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

There’s little better than the comfort of a wood stove. Wood stoves have been around for centuries, and they are proving to be just as popular today as they were a hundred years ago. One reason for this is the advances in technology.

Wood stoves of today produce less smoke than wood stoves of old, and they produce less mess as well. Another reason why they continue to be popular today is that they come in such a wide variety of styles that finding one to fit into the d

Easy Home Decorating - How to Decorate Spaces for People

October 20, 2009 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

When it comes to decorating your home, forget about the empty, lifeless
rooms you see in interior design magazines and books. Instead, you
should concentrate on designing all of the rooms in your home as
backdrops for the people who will be living in those spaces.

Here are a few easy home decorating techniques for designing dynamic spaces:

Don’t be afraid to leave some empty spaces in your rooms. Empty space
allows for breathing room and lets the most important items in the room
shine — the people who live there!

Avoid large patterns in your fabrics and wallpapers. As a general rule,
use no designs larger than your palm, because they will interfere with
the appearance of people in the room. Using smaller patterns on walls
and furniture will mean that friends and family won’t have to compete
with bold patterns for attention.

Use paint colors that complement people’s skin and eye colors. For
light skin colors, use yellows, pinks, and beiges. For darker
complexions, yellows, olives, and tans can make people look great.

Use textures that stimulate the sense of touch. Look for textures that
are nice to caress, such as velvet, chenille, or satin. They’ll create
a feeling of being pampered.

Always choose comfort over pretense. Just because a sofa looks great
doesn’t mean it’s comfortable. When you visit a showroom, remember that
in order to truly test a piece of furniture, you need to sit on it for
awhile, until you feel totally rested. Only then will can you get a
realistic feel for its support and comfort level.

Your home is meant to be a place for people, and if you always keep
yourself, your family, and your guests in mind, you’ll be well on your
way to designing spaces that will be more comfortable and emotionally
appealing than the staged photos you see in magazines and books.

How to Deal with Crabgrass

October 19, 2009 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

This Article deals with the perennial problem of Crabgrass and how to control it. Read and enjoy!

Crabgrass is a warm season grass that does its most vigorous growing in June and July. Crabgrass is killed by the first frost of the season. If you live in a warmer climate it may only go dormant or semi-dormant during the cooler months. The way to deal with crabgrass is to get it before it gets going.

What Crabgrass Likes

If you make a nice home for it in your yard, crabgrass will do very well. By knowing your enemy, you will know what not to do. Crabgrass likes warm weather and sunshine. It doesn’t mind nutrient poor soils. It likes thin turf so there is plenty of sun shining down on it. Furthermore it likes short lawns, again so it can gather the suns warming rays. Crabgrass dies every year in all but the warmest climates but it leaves seed to carry on its legacy.

What You Can Do to Control Crabgrass

First, deny it sunshine. Mow your lawn to a height of 2 1/2 to 3 inches. Fertilize your lawn so that it fills in and keeps sunlight off the ground. Reseed thin patches in your lawn, again, to deny the seeds sunshine. These are all things you should be doing anyway. Keeping your lawn healthy is the most effective way to prevent crabgrass.

Next, as another preventative measure, use pre-emergent herbicides. Pre-emergent just means “kill it before it starts growing”. Even in warmer climates, pre-emergents are beneficial. Most people will be
applying the herbicides in early spring, but in subtropical zones, like Southern California, people will apply them in December and January. Note though that most varieties of these herbicides will also inhibit desirable seed growth. So time your reseeding so that the seeds are not stopped by the herbicide.

In the summer months, there isn’t much you can do to fight crabgrass. It is a fast-growing, vigorous weed. The best plan is to prevent it from getting a hold in your lawn next year. Deal with crabgrass before it becomes a problem.

Home Improvements and Pretty Real Estates

October 18, 2009 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Like it or not, people will say things about your home. Or rather, your home says a lot about you. Either way you look at it, we’re living in a world obsessed with image. The right one. Now, be honest. Ask yourself this question, is my house a before or after image of a home-makeover TV show?

Now, if you answered “After”, you were probably just too shy, or are in denial (kidding). But if you said “Before”, well, at least you know you have a problem, and you can fix it.

You don’t have to call the reality TV show guys for a televised makeover of your home or property. You just need to have your local builder make a quote of your home’s improvement costs. And then you can apply for a home improvement loan.

Your goal is to apply for the home improvement loan with the lowest interest rate. But don’t just jump on the first one that looks promising. Shop for quotes, and then choose the best. Ideally, you should borrow money above the quoted price of your builder, just so you won’t run into money shortage in the middle of the construction.

Whether it’s a new paint job, or a landscaping project, or an extension room, house renovations certainly increase the value of your property. Now, your house fits the “After” photo left side of the TV screen. Of course, nothing beats a smile here and there in your home, and just plain being nice to each other by everyone living there. Now that’s the best home improvement of all.

Oreintal Rugs Buying Guide How to Decorate Your Room with a Persian Rug

October 16, 2009 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Traditionally, oriental rugs were thought of as expensive luxury items affordable only to a select few, but now area rugs have become affordable additions as common to homes as sofas and dining tables. No longer considered expensive accessory pieces, Persian design oriental rugs are now sold as part of the overall decor. Consumers who buy a new dining room or living room set will more than likely purchase oriental rug to complement their selections.

It is important to understand what factors most affect when purchasing an oriental area rug. However, hand-made Persian design oriental rugs have the unique ability to pull an entire room together by offering nothing more than a way to accentuate the furniture itself.

What every rug buyer should know

Oriental rugs can be an intimidating subject to discuss. There are literally thousands of books, brochures, and pamphlets on hand-woven oriental rugs design and construction, so building solid oriental rug knowledge is a life long undertaking. Fortunately every area rug falls into a general design category, a specific type of construction, and contains only a limited number of fibers. If you can develop a good understanding of these basic aspects you can confidently make a decision in purchasing a hand-made Persian design oriental rugs.

Color

Color can set the entire mood for a space and is usually the first criteria on any one’s list when purchasing an oriental rug. Each shade sets a different tone and adds intensity to a space. For example, an area rug can open up and brighten a space by using lighter shades, or in contrast, darker shades close in a space and help create a more intimate atmosphere.
Additionally, people who may be looking for an area rug to compliment fabrics or wall treatments. For this customer; the color pallet is specific and may offer limitations; however, oriental rugs are offered in a diverse array of hues. The need for a broad coloration ranges is universally recognized, and hand-made oriental rugs offers a limitless color varieties. This unmatched capability ensures the right color match for any decor.

Designs

Over the past several years the floor covering industry has seen an impressive increase in the installations of hard surface flooring. The durability of these hard surface floors combined with the inexpensive costs of most hand-made oriental area rugs allow homeowners to change the decor of space much more often than in times past. Now, more than ever, design and style play a pivotal role in flooring decisions. Traditional, contemporary and everything in between.

With some of the most fashion forward rugs in the market, today there are designs to fit any lifestyle.

1) Traditional.

Traditional area rugs are typically modern day representations of time
honored European and Asian designs reminiscent of either oriental or
Persian motifs. It is also important to understand when it is referred to
traditional area oriental rugs with Persian designs that we are speaking
about that; the design. True Oriental and Persian rugs are all individually hand knotted of natural fibers made only in the Middle East and far East regions of the world and are priced accordingly.

Traditional designs are sometimes geometric using an allover pattern with lineal components. Traditional geometric patterns are very simplistic and unlike most traditional designs usually have no discernable flow. On the other hand, traditional; designs can be pictorial illustrating elements from nature or from life in general. Floral patterns are also very common traditional designs, utilizing a center medallion of an all over technique. Most floral designs will be framed with a border of some kind and are usually recognized as more Persian Rug than Orientals. Traditional floral designs are also typically considered more formal than most.

Modern day traditional designs rugs utilize color pallets that reflect modern day fashions; however, many still simulate authentic oriental Persian design motifs and utilize natural fibers that provide an antique reproduction appearance.

2) Contemporary.

At the other end of the design spectrum you will find the contemporary
classifications. When describing contemporary area rugs terms such as asymmetrical, architectural, and free form are common. Basically, contemporary designs are characterized by stark contrasts, bold use of color, and often geometric design elements.

One classification with the Contemporary genre is Modern. Modern designs tend to be more architectural in feeling. Many Art-Deco designs fall into this category. They utilize pure geometric design elements along with dazzling variation of primary colors such as blues, greens, and reds. Modern designs tend to be assertive and bold offering a strong statement to a decor. While on the other hand, Retro designs hearken back to styles that were first popular in the 60’s and early 70’s. They take advantage of the free form concept rarely having any rhyme or reason to the flow of the design.

3) Transitional.

In a nutshell, transitional designs are a blend of contemporary with traditional. Also, sometimes referred to as casual, they tend to be more popular with people looking for the elegance of a traditional design without the formality they often project. Transitional are the broadest classification of area rug design and often the most difficult to recognize simply because they can contain so many elements found in both traditional and contemporary area rugs.

However, most transitional designs are characterized through the use of open spaces containing a sparse assortment of design components; sometimes traditional and sometimes contemporary. You will often, but not always, find a border in transitional rugs allowing for a more traditional element to what would otherwise be a contemporary design. Floral and leaf patterns often fall into this classification.

4) Tribal.

Unlike transitional, tribal designs area rugs are probably the easiest classification of oriental rugs. They are characterized by those design elements common to a specific culture or ethnic group. They utilize earth tone colors such as yellow, gold, red, and brown. Tribal designs oriental rugs combine these elements in very exacting and structured designs offering their own interpretation. They lend themselves well to decor that take on specific themes, offering a way to tie the common elements of a particular space together.

Construction

The construction of oriental area rugs, though technical, is a key element in making decision when purchasing a rug. Many people who are looking to purchase an oriental rug are interested in the quality of the rug they are about to purchase. It is important not to become overwhelmed with these facts; however, explaining how a rug came to be and its role in the quality and design adds to the story of the rug and creates confidence in the product.

There is no need to know everything about each construction process but having a general understanding is imperative.

A) Hand-Knotting (or Hand-Weaving).

Hand-knotting is achieved when the craftsman ties of knots pile yarns around woven backing fibers (warp and weft). The resulting face of the rugs is then sheered to a pre-determined height to give the pile uniformity. In general the value of a hand-knotted rug depends on the number of knots per square inch. The more knots per square inch the more valuable the rug.

B) Hand-Tufted.

Hand-tufted rugs utilize a hand held tufting tool called, simply, a tufting gun. The craftsman will use the gun to fire pile yarns through a primary backing material known as a scrim. This process forms a looped pile. If these loops are left intact the rug is referred to as hand-hooked rug whereas if the loops are sheered off to create a cut pile look, you then have a hand-tufted rug. A secondary backing is then applied to the area rug securing the pile yarn in place and adding extra stability.

Of course, hand made oriental rugs take quite a bit more effort to produce and are made from natural fibers; therefor, they tend to be more valuable. However, the natural beauty and subtle imperfections that make each rug unique outweigh any increased expense.

Fiber

There are dozens of materials used in the construction of area rugs. All of which have unique characteristics that offer its own advantages.

1) Wool

Wool is noted for luxury and softness, wool has a high build and is available in many colors.

- Wool can absorb up to 1/3 of its weight in moisture through cuticle pores and has an ouster membrane that repels water. It can be stretched to 30% without breaking.

- Wool rugs have excellent resistance to compression due to the physical nature of wool fiber. It has a natural crimp with millions of coiled molecules, rather than the artificially induced waves found in man-made fibers.

2) Silk

Silk is used either on its own or in combination with wool. Silk is reasonably hard wearing but it lacks the springiness and suppleness of wool; consequently, silk tend to retain any creases or scuffing in the pile, and far greater care is needed to protect them damage.

Its physical beauty is unsurpassed and silk rugs are normally used as

decorative, rather than functional examples of textiles art, either as wall hangings, or floor covering in rooms that rarely see practical use. Silk is also used as a foundation material; it is extremely strong, keep its shape, and can be spun into very fine strands; however, it is only used when exceptionally fine knotting is required.
Understanding basic design concepts is very helpful in selecting an oriental rug. A few basic principles in design coordination include:

Rugs create mood.

Rugs more specifically their shades, add intensity and relevance to a space. For example, an area rug can open up and brighten a space by using lighter shades or in contrast, darker shades close it in and make it more intimate.

Never try to match the main fabric color. Find a rug that uses its main color the same family of colors found in the swatch you are coordinating. For example, it would be impossible to match the exact red found in a pillow. Rather look to see what second or third colors are used in the pillow and match families of colors not specific colors.

Another factor you certainly want to consider is size. From small scatter rugs to palatial carpets, both the actual room size and specific decorating scheme are critical in determining the size of the rug best suited to your needs. Dining room rugs need to be sized for placement of the chairs and the table as well as for the absolute measurements of the room. Take into account how much of the pattern will be hidden or obscured under the table. Obviously a center medallion design would not be the ideal choice for this purpose.

Living rooms can have a wide array of layouts and elements. Sofas, chairs, occasional tables, and lighting fixtures can be arranged in a single unified configuration or in separate seating or “conversation” areas. In either case your rugs should play a key role in focusing and enhancing the placement of your other furnishings. In effect, they should function as the “foundation” of your design plan for any area in which they are used. The possibilities of decorating with rugs are endless, and with the Persian design oriental rug collection from the rug weaving capitals of the world, you can be assured of the very best in colors, design from Bijan, and quality for every room in your home.

Traffic makes a difference. One critical element in selecting and area rug that is commonly overlooked is traffic. Understanding how much traffic an area rug will be subjected to is not only important in selecting an appropriate design that can hide dirt but also in selecting a rug that can hold up its appearance.

Home Remodeling Ideas The Finishing Touches

October 15, 2009 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Building homes breaks down to several different parts. While larger chunks get the best inspection, smaller areas, those that add significance later on, tend to get ignored. These are the home remodeling ideas addition, the accessories, which might not contribute to the actual structural integrity or operation can simply add a huge factor regarding the flavor and the livability of the place. So ask yourself often: have I covered all the essentials in the designs feasibly? What types of accessories would match the specific decorating theme? What other accessory options are available? And how can I translate the home’s overall style to a particular room in the house?

Take note that attention to detail gets bigger returns in the long run. These apparently insignificant details along the guide could very well make significant differences in several key locations. in particular areas. Small entries like a mini exhaust port in the corner of the room as well as above the stove may be illogical but it keeps the air cooking smoke free in the feasibility process. The right home remodeling ideas addition should be chosen and used carefully before it can add ‘feelings’ to a room in an instant.

It’s also been a principle that: accessorizing according to function is best served identical. Having three sets of identical loungers arranged in a martial way is better than the haphazard function with several un-identical items. Such notion is gone these modern days. Always work around the principle of accessorizing not by uniformity but by comfort and aesthetic, even if dissimilar. Add personality to your style to create an actual visual interest - to accentuate or create focal points. Hence, it’s important to but the best items in their best places. Otherwise, you’ll only end up with a jumble of clutter as if you’ve never cleared up all the debris from the renovation.

Also, choose the right mix and balance of accessories. If you have a Tuscan lighting, then also keep your hardware or fabric in the Tuscan theme. However if you found the perfect Tuscan carpet, don’t shower your entire floor with carpets just to attempt a ‘unified’ look. If you’ll find it more convenient, you can easily create harmony rather by staying by a consistent color palette. That probably is the best home remodeling ideas addition trick.

But if you want a more standout result apart from the common relaxing hue of the room, then go an extra step intending for a traditional/formal, Asian, casual-contemporary, industrial, or a country style; you can even go vintage or eclectic, just the right choice of accessories and your on it.

In a nutshell experimenting designs work splendidly if you have something to pattern on. The tiniest bits and pieces such as towel bars, shelves, carpet, wall or desk clocks, lamps, slip cover, throws, furniture, side tables, photographs, artwork, area rugs, book cases, vases, pillows, mirrors, even plants - can make all the difference in any room’s d

Choosing the Right Baby Crib

October 13, 2009 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

With a new baby on the way, you’ll want the perfect crib to coordinate with your nursery and provide a safe sleep environment for your little one.

Not only are there different styles of baby cribs, but there is now a wide selection of convertible cribs. Many baby cribs are designed to convert to toddler beds, children’s benches, and even adult daybeds for later use elsewhere in the home.

There are so many different types and sizes of kids bedding and baby bedding for children that it can sometimes be baffling to try and determine which bed size is best, and there is really no correct answer to this. It is all based on the individual child and other considerations.

The crib must meet all recommended safety standards. Most new cribs on the market today comply with both mandatory and voluntary safety standards.

For example, the bars or slats of the crib railing should be no more than 2 3/8 inches apart so a baby can’t wedge his head between them. A mattress should fit snugly into the baby crib. There should not be any room that allows your baby to get his or her hands (or any other body parts) caught between the mattress and the baby crib.

Carefully choose the location for your baby’s crib, in particular don’t place the crib against a window, near drapery fixtures, or near furniture which could help your baby climb out.

This article may be used without permission as long as it is shown in its entirety with links intact.

Because a baby crib is the only children’s product manufactured with the intention that a child will be left unattended, parents should be extremely careful in the selection process. You might find this link very handy with your selection process http://www.epinions.com/

Septic Systems The Inside Story

October 12, 2009 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Two Components

Class 4 septic systems are divided into two components, the septic tank and the septic field or leaching bed. Waste is piped out of the house into the septic tank, which is essentially a water clarification tank, in which anaerobic bacteria break the waste down into solids (sludge), liquid effluent, and scum.

Septic System

The solids settle to the bottom, the scum floats to the top and the liquid effluent flows through an outlet pipe into a distribution chamber, where it is directed to the septic field. The septic field is an effluent water disposal system, where the liquid is channeled through perforated pipes to different parts of a field of loose gravel.

Septic Tank

Materials that initially float in the scum layer are kept out of the drainage sytem by an outflow tee or baffle. If the tank is not pumped regularly, the level of solids can rise, and if it approaches the level of the outflow tee, scum and solids can proceed out into the drainage system, clogging the pipes and gravel - and eventually preventing the absorption of the water by the surrounding earth.

A Class 5 septic system is a holding tank for the storage of sewage at the site where it is produced. A typical holding tank system is comprised of a single compartment tank with a pump-out stack and an audible or visual warning device to alert the homeowner when the tank requires emptying. A holding tank is costly to operate, places restrictions of the owner, and is dependent on Class 7 (hauled) sewage system for waste collection and disposal.

A property serviced by a holding tank system requires an agreement registered on title to notify current and future owners of the servicing restrictions on the property.

Care and Maintenance

With proper care and maintenance, your septic tank and field should provide many years of trouble-free service. There are, however, some important steps to follow to help you maintain the proper operation of your sewage disposal system.

The Honey Wagon!

The septic tank in a residential system should be inspected at least once every two years for sludge buildup. The tank should be pumped by a licensed septic tank pumping contractor when necessary. Under normal use a septic tank should have its contents removed every two to three years.

The use of starters, bacterial feeds or cleaners in a septic system is normally not necessary.

The final grade (top soil) over the field should not be altered after it has been installed and inspected, and should be kept grassed after installation. Shrubs, trees or gardens should not be established over the septic field.

Discharge from evestough drains and sump pumps should not be directed into or over a septic field, and lawn sprinkler systems must not be located within this area.

Helpful Hints

Limiting excessive amounts of water in a short time can help reduce disruption of the septic process. You may want to consider the following water use reduction practices:

* Install water saving shower heads, sink aerators, and low-flush toilets.

* Use dishwashers and washing machines only for full loads, and stagger the loads through the week.

* Don’t run water continuously when shaving, brushing teeth, rinsing dishes or veggies.

* A container of water in the fridge prevents the need to run water continuously for a cold drink.

* The installation of garbage grinders, large volume hot tubs or spas are not recommended unless the septic system has been sized to accomodate their use.

* The use of biodegradable products is highly recommended. Disposal of non-biodegradeable products such as condoms, feminine hygiene products, plastics, dental floss, etc. is strongly discouraged.

If you have questions regarding the care and maintenance of your septic system, consult your contractor or the Environmental Protection Division of your local Health Department.

The standards for private sewage systems are prescribed in Ontario Regulation 358/90, under the Enviromental Protection Act, and the Guidelines established by Ministry of Environment, and requirements of your local munipality or township.

General Guidelines for Purchasers

* If the system is 5-7 years old and has never been pumped it is unlikely that there are serious problems.

* If there is no record of the system having been pumped but the owner has a vague recollection of pumping the system at some time in the distant past, figure that it has never been pumped.

* If the system is over 10 years old and has never been pumped, it is possible that there has been some damage to the septic field, and if it’s not been pumped for over 15 years it is quite likely.

* The only way to make an accurate determination of the system is to have a licensed contractor or engineering firm perform a tank, distribution chamber and field inspection, and possibly soils sampling.

* Flushing dye through the system looks good but will only indicate systems that are already seriouslyclogged, in which case there should already be more obvious signs.

* Flushing dye may not indicate serious defects or indicate systems that are close to failure but still functional.

* If you are on a septic system, adding a bedroom, even without adding a bathroom, may mean having to increase the size of the tank and drainage field.
