Light Up Your Kitchen with the Right Lighting!

September 20, 2009 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

The proper lighting in a room can make or break it. With lighting, you can create a soft, cozy room for reading and relaxing. With bright, brilliant light you create a sense of excitement and energy. When looking for the right lighting for a room consider what you will do in that space and what you want the lighting to do. If you plan to install lighting fixtures in your kitchen, you will want to use kitchen lighting that is bright and clean. You need to see what you are doing without shadows and haziness.

A popular choice of lighting is track lighting. With a long strip of lights that point in whatever direction you decide, it is a great option for areas with a lot of lighting needs. You can direct the light at pictures, doorways, over a table or near a chair. Track lighting is also used for hallways where long spaces need constant light. The designs and colors of the track lighting fixtures are really anything. You will find many options in any store.

A common area that people seem to have trouble with is outdoor lighting. Again, there are many options available to choose from. Strings of lighting fixtures that push into the ground are common. Usually, these, get bumped or run over with the lawnmower if placed near high traffic areas. And, keeping the lights on all evening can become costly. Another alternative is solar lighting. These look similar to the last but are powered by the sun. During the day they charge up from the solar rays even in cloudy weather. Then, at evening, when the sun is down, they are glowing. Landscape lighting is a great way to line your driveway or sidewalks. You can also use brighter fixtures to light up your flag or just a flower bed. It makes for a great look to those approaching the house in the evening hours.

Lighting, in whatever form, can be expensive. But, purchasing the proper lights can add quality and life to a room. So, what do you do? There are several options. For one, there are stores that offer discount lighting. Many of your larger home stores and even some department stores carry lighting fixtures that are very nice and affordable. Of course, the selection and styles may be limited, but you may find what you want anyway. There are stores that specialize in lighting and they often can order something you want if they do not carry the items. So, there are choices.

For all types of spaces, indoor and outdoor, there are lighting options. Consider all aspects of what you are installing though. The cost of the fixtures, the wattage they will put out and even the quality of light you will gain. Lighting fixtures can add and enhance the mood of any room. Take your time and consider all these options before choosing the lighting you want.

Five Quick and Cheap Ways to Decorate for Fall

September 18, 2009 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

1. Utilize the “use what you have” theory! Go through your cupboards and drawers to find items that can be used as props in your fall display. Find pitchers to use to hold wildflowers and dried grasses, bring out warm throws to toss over your couch, layer fabrics on your tables. (Remember, pretty blankets and quilts can work well!)

2. Take a nature walk. Gather organic elements that can be used in your fall makeover. Acorns, pinecones, seed pods, bark, even stones can be used as display in bowls around the home. Press pretty leaves and strew them on tables and around centerpieces.

3. Bring out the candles! If you put away your candles for winter, now is the time to bring them to center stage. Gather groups of inexpensive votives and tie together with scraps of raffia.

4. Add scent to the home. Simmer apple peels and cinnamon sticks on the stove, or invest in a couple of vials of potpourri oil. They are relatively inexpensive at just a couple bucks apiece, and they last forever as you only need a few drops.

5. Celebrate the tastes of the harvest season. Keep apples and pomegranates out in bowls, store squashes on countertops, pick up a pumpkin or two at your produce stand (even though it’s not Halloween yet!) and use as a centerpiece, or pile a couple next to the kitchen door.

Most of all, take the time to celebrate this special season and appreciate the comfort we can offer our families in our own homes.

Removing Asbestos From Your Home

September 16, 2009 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

During the 1930’s asbestos was discovered to be a great material to be used in building homes, it’s fire resistant as well as sturdy and strong. It was used on shingles extensively up until the 1970’s when it was proven to cause many diseases.

If your home was built during this time, there is a chance that asbestos may have been used, but just because asbestos exists in your home that does not mean that there is risk of developing any of the diseases related to it. It’s when the asbestos becomes damaged and the fibers are released into the air that there is a health risk.

Of course, most people who suspect they have asbestos in their home probably want it removed right away, but now matter how much you want to get rid of it, this is a job best left to professionals as the very act of removing it can cause the fibers to become air born and put you and your family at risk.

Today, there are many laws and regulations controlling the removal and disposal of asbestos.

First, a professional should inspect your shingles - if they are still in good condition the best course may be to just leave them as the fibers will not be released and therefore, are not a health risk. However, if you do have asbestos shingles and do decide to leave them it is very important that you do not drill or cut into them in any way as doing so can loosen the fibers.

If the shingles are in bad condition, you have two options - either remove them or repair them. In order to repair them, they must be professionally enclosed so that they are no longer a danger. Removal also requires a professional and disposal can be tricky as some places do not allow disposal of asbestos waste.

As you might imagine, disposing of asbestos can be quite expensive. First of all there are many government regulations to be met. Then there is the safety of those that are removing, gathering and transporting the asbestos. To prevent inhalation of the fibers there must be protective equipment as well as clothing. Care must be taken that no asbestos fibers get into the environment while the removal is taking place. It is a serious and costly undertaking.

These days, most of the homes that used asbestos shingles have either been resided or are gone forever so thankfully few people will have to deal with this issue. If your home has asbestos shingles, your best bet is to consult a professional. Look in the yellow pages for asbestos or hazardous waste removal. It can be an expensive undertaking but well worth your piece of mind.

A Guide to Mattress Stores

September 15, 2009 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

A good mattress can make all the difference in the world. After a good night’s sleep, you will feel rested, alert, and healthy — ready to take on the world. If this is true — and it is - then why do so many people continue to sleep on old, worn-out mattresses? Night after night, month after month, year after year why do so many people suffer? The answer is often quite simplemany people are intimidated by the prospect of mattress shopping.

There are so many mattresses available and in so many different styles and price ranges. How to choose? The first step is to do some introductory research. Get an idea for what is available. After some basic research, you should have some idea as to what you like — and what you don’t.

Armed with this preliminary knowledge, it’s time to take a trip to the mattress store. Many local furniture and bedding stores sell mattresses. Many areas also have stand-alone mattress stores. These will have names like Mattress Giant, Mattress City, and Mattress King. These stores often have an excellent selection of mattresses. What’s more, since these stores only sell mattresses, their employees are usually well-versed in the features of each. This type of mattress store is a great place to start in your search for the perfect bed. They usually feature several different types of mattresses set up on display. Test them out. Lie down. Take a nap. Bounce a little bittest their firmness, their resiliency.

Once you know what you’re looking for, the Internet is another option for finding a mattress store. Just make sure you factor in the cost of shipping when you are comparison-shopping. Overstock often offers mattresses at deep discounts over retail. They offer a variety of styles, from pillowtop to memory foam.

With a little research and knowledge, mattress shopping can be a pleasant experience.

Dishwasher Detergent Cup A Sticky Situation

September 14, 2009 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Detergent tends to build up over time and you may find that one day the detergent cup won’t open. The detergent acts like glue, sealing the cup. Your dishwasher’s detergent cup is located on the panel, inside your dishwasher’s door. Grab your sponge and a bucket of warm water and clean the detergent cup inside and out. If this doesn’t fix your problem, read on.

Let’s understand how detergent cups work. The detergent is placed in the cup and the spring-loaded door is snapped shut. This keeps the detergent dry until later in the cycle. As the cycle progresses, a component will trigger the spring, allowing the door to open and the detergent to be released.

Not all dishwashers use the same components to open the detergent cup. Depending on your dishwasher the components in this process may include:

  • Timer and bi-metal switch
  • Timer and wax motor
  • Timer

The timer is responsible for the length of time your dishwasher runs each cycle. The timer sends an electrical current to each cycle component at a specific time and for a determined length of time. When the timer indicates it’s ready for the detergent cup to open, it will send a current to a bi-metal switch or a wax motor. If your dishwasher doesn’t have one of these components, the timer will activate the release of the door.

A bi-metal switch is an electrical component located behind the dishwasher detergent cup. This switch consists of two types of flexible metals bonded together to form one strip. An electrical current is sent to the bi-metal switch, heating the strip. Since the metals expand at different rates, the strip will bend. This action will open the detergent-cup door. A defective bi-metal switch won’t expand enough to signal the release of the door and the switch will have to be replaced.

Many dishwasher manufacturers have replaced the bi-metal switch with a wax motor. There’s actually wax inside this small motor. The timer sends a current and the wax inside heats up. As the wax heats up it expands and pushes on a piston. The pressure from the piston releases the spring and opens the detergent-cup door. If there’s anything wrong with the wax motor, you may have problems with your dishwasher releasing the detergent.

If your dishwasher doesn’t have a bi-metal switch or a wax motor, the timer also serves as an actuator. The timer activates a lever to release the door. If the lever is broken or damaged in some way, it’s probably the culprit.

Test your bi-metal switch or wax motor if you have one. If you don’t have one of these components or they aren’t the source of the problem, test your timer. You may need to replace it.

Take care of your dishwasher and it will take care of you.

Things To Consider When Buying An Intercom

September 13, 2009 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

An intercom is an electronic communication system that is commonly found in hospitals, schools, offices and other large buildings, in ships and liners, and even in homes. With just a push of a button, an intercom system enables people in different rooms to communicate with each other in an instant.

The intercom is now becoming a popular component not only of workplaces but also of every household. Keep in mind that the right knowledge and proper caution is important, and the guidelines below will help you in finding the perfect intercom that best suits your needs.

1. Set your budget. The first important thing to do before shopping for an intercom system is to set your budget limit. The type, make, brand, and features of an intercom system will largely depend on the amount that you are willing to spend on it.

2. Know the basics. Different brands may have different systems, but their basic components are essentially the same. In general, an intercom has the following basic parts:

*The master station - also known as the central control panel, this is the unit that controls the system.

*The sub-stations/door stations - also known as the speakers or slave units, these are connected to the control panel.

*The power supply - this feeds power to all the units in order to make them function.

3. Determine the range that you want. Different intercom systems have varying ranges, with some even reaching almost 1,000 feet (or 304.8 meters).

Choosing the range of your intercom system depends on their use and purpose, which can vary from room to room, floor to floor, and even as far as from one building to another.

In general, intercoms are usually used for the following purposes:

*To connect different rooms.

*To connect rooms to a central office.

*To broadcast announcements/as a public address system.

*To function as a ‘bell’, especially at schools (to signal the change of classes) and at home (connected to a door buzzer).

4. Check its compatibility with your home (or building) structure. The ability of the intercom system to deliver a good sound quality depends on the structure of your home (or building). Obstacles, such as metal walls, may interfere with the signals and prevent your intercom system from producing a clear sound.

5. Choose the desired type of intercom system. Intercom systems can either be hard-wired or wireless.

*Hard-wired or traditional intercom systems - these require wires to connect the entire system that is installed throughout your home (or building). Although they provide minimum interference and/or restrictions, hard-wired intercoms can be expensive to install (even far more expensive than the actual cost of the units themselves). They can also prove to be less convenient, with all the wires running throughout the walls and ceilings.

*Wireless intercom systems - these units may be more costly than the traditional, hard-wired ones, but they have the advantage of requiring simple installation: just plug them to a power source, and you’re all set!

6. Determine the power supply to be used. Intercom systems can perform with either of the following power sources:

*An AC power outlet (or a 12 volts DC power supply)

*Batteries (needs regular replacement)

7. Check the product’s warranty. In a way, the length of an intercom’s warranty, including the extent of its coverage, reflects the manufacturer’s confidence in their particular product. Make sure that you understand the clauses and provisions that are stated in the warranty certificate, and that they are backed not only by the manufacturer but the local dealer (or dealers) as well.

8. Transact business with experienced dealers that are known for their reputation. They will not only provide you with several possible options but also actually help you in choosing the best intercom that would give the best value for your money. It is also strongly recommended that you deal with certified and accredited dealers and manufacturers that have been in business for a considerable length of time, who not only offer clear warranty considerations but also extensive after-sales support.

By following the guidelines that are mentioned above, shopping for a perfect intercom will surely be an easy task for you - allowing you to enjoy the many benefits of a good intercom system minus the worries and frustrations. Happy hunting!

Kitchen Cabinets - Setting the Style For Your Kitchen

September 12, 2009 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Kitchen cabinets are a vital consideration for any contemporary kitchen, whether you are constructing a totally new kitchen or just redecorating it. It is not always as straightforward to install cabinets as it appears. Sometimes you need to bring in a professional to help you with the best choices. A qualified carpenter can also be necessary to redesign your kitchen to get the most from the space you have and to visualize how many cabinets you will need to store your crockery and kitchen utensils. Bringing in a professional can also mean you get a better deal on premium materials.

You can often find experts who will help you redesign your kitchen or bathroom at retailers, wholesalers and building contractors. Kitchens advisers can also be found at home centers and some of these will be qualified architects. Getting an expert on-board a project means that you will benefit from their understanding of how kitchens are used, how to locate important kitchen fixtures in the most appropriate place and can recommend particular brands to suit your requirements.

What you can expect from your cabinets varies. There are manufacturers who offer a tailored product where the customer can choose from a range of possibilities. But this degree of pick-and-choose freedom is not likely if you buy wholesale or from a home center - these outlets will have a stock which you can choose from instead. The typically you will be offered a choice of cabinet doors. For example, many suppliers offer at least maple, cherry or simple blond wood stain. This kind of choice is easy for the builder to offer and would even be available in new building projects where the kitchen fittings have already been ordered in bulk and the choice is relatively limited.

If you do have the freedom to choose your own cabinets, you can select from a wide range of materials either for the entire cabinet or just the cabinet doors. Below is a sample list of some choices:

- Alder
- Ash
- Birch
- Cherry
- Hickory
- Maple
- Oak
- Pine
- Poplar
- Walnut
- Decorative laminate
- Metal

When you pick out kitchen cabinets on your own or even with an expert, ask if the kitchen cabinet brands are approved by the KCMA (Kitchen Cabinets Manufacturing Association), and have the KCMA seal on the inside of the cabinet. Only kitchen cabinet manufacturers from the United States and Canada that have passed rigorous testing on each and every brand that is manufactured by an approved company can display this seal. You can tell the manufacturer by the code on the seal. Below are kitchen cabinet manufacturers and their codes currently approved by KCMA:

- American Woodmark Corporation, Code X.
- MasterBrand Cabinets, Code MBCI.
- Continental Cabinets, Inc., Code CC.
- De Pere Cabinets, Inc., Code PJB.
- MasterBrand/HomeCrest Cabinetry, Code HA.
- Kitchen Kompact, Inc., Code I.
- Republic/Legacy Cabinets Inc., Code LE.
- Prestige Acquisition Corp., Code PI.
- Republic Industries, Inc., Code RI.
- Rosebud Manufacturing Co., Code RK.
- Armstrong Cabinet Products, Code H.
- Eurocraft, Code EUC.
- Texwood Industries, LP, Code QJ.
- KraftMaid Cabinetry, Inc., Code GA.

Shower Curtains

September 11, 2009 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Shower curtains are used mostly for privacy, compartmentalizing the bathroom, keeping water in the shower area and enhancing the look of the bathroom. Shower curtains are perhaps the most visible decoration in the bathroom. They can liven up the bathroom atmosphere and make a stylish statement. There are different types, styles and patterns of shower curtains designed to cater to individual tastes and needs.

Shower curtains are a little less efficient in keeping water in the shower area, compared to shower doors. Vinyl and polyester curtains are the most effective in this regard. There are infinite patterns and designs available in vinyl. Care should be taken to choose thick, durable curtains for the shower area. Vinyl and polyester curtains are inexpensive, and both opaque and clear varieties can be found on the market. However, those who prefer a luxuriant cozy style do not favor vinyl and polyester curtains. The style-conscious usually opts for cotton, terrycloth, nylon or other such fabrics.

One downside in using natural fabrics is that they absorb water easily, leading to mildew formation and soap stains. It is essential to keep these types of curtains dry and clean, and allow light to fall on them. As far as possible, they should be spread out to let them dry easily. Mildew and stains can be removed by washing them with detergent, or soaking them in limewater and then letting them dry. More recently, to counter such problems, these fabrics have been treated with waterproof coatings and stain-resistant formulations. Another remedy is to opt for a vinyl lining in the inner part of the shower curtain, which is exposed to water and soap.

A more modern innovation, hemp shower curtains, has resolved the problem of aesthetic appeal, functionality and maintenance. Hemp is a plant derivative with natural antifungal and antibacterial properties, to counter the formation of mildew.
