Landscaping with Rocks

September 30, 2009 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Have you ever considered landscaping with rocks? Not only does this add some texture to your garden, but it is also very attractive and doesn’t have to cost the earth. The beauty of using rocks is that you don’t necessarily have to spend a lot on materials, as you might already find you have a wide variety of rocks on your land to begin with.

My wife and I decided to go for landscaping with rocks because we were constantly turning up stones in our garden. The stones came in all manner of shapes and sizes which made it easy to create deep and meaningful displays in simple arrangements.

The first idea we had was to knock up a circle of stones around the four small trees towards the right hand corner or our back yard. Landscaping with rocks around each of the trees really helped to define the space. Each tree had its own little collection of stones circling it, a bit over two feet in diameter.

After that success, we decided to use the flat rocks we kept finding to make a walkway. We found this to be quite different from the tree design, because of the sheer time and effort that was required to uncover the stones and arrange them suitably, particularly because of the bad weather we were experiencing at the time.

Next, We laid a sheet of plastic over the grass and weeds growing by the trees and used the stones we had already laid to weigh it in place. We then put some red mulch over the plastic which gave us a nice, professional look. This high priced look came at very low cost, with the only expenditure being that on the mulch and the plastic sheet.

My wife came up with the idea of digging a small ditch to hammer a spike into numerous parts of the clay earth. This went some way to help the land absorb more water, which was proving to be a problem. We then filled the ditches with gravel and sand, before arranging some stones over the top.

After a great deal of sweat and perseverance, the walkway was completed. This time-consuming task was well worth it in the end and turned out to be quite cheap, apart from the hours of work we put in!

On the whole, landscaping with rocks already in your garden is a cheap way to spruce up your garden and give it a modern feel. The colors and textures of the stones are beautiful and contrasting, and we frequently receive comments from our guests about how nice the garden is looking. We are so happy with our garden now, and especially satisfied that we achieved our goal cheaply and relatively painlessly with resources already on our land.

So why no give it a go yourself. If you’re creative, there are so many things you can achieve when landscaping with rocks. It’ll save you money, and you’ll by happy in yourself, knowing that you’ve really accomplished something that looks so professional off your own back.

Hydroponics Gardening - An Introduction to Hydroponics Gardening for Beginners (part 16) Temperature

September 29, 2009 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Take Control Of Your Grow Room Temperature

It is vital to maintain a temperature within the specified upper and lower limits for the species of plant being grown. This temperature may need to vary between dark and light periods, again dependant upon species. The desired results are usually obtained by either fans, to lower the ambient room temperature, or heat sources to raise it.

Reducing the room temperature can be done in various ways. For example, if your grow room is quite small and the air input via say a 4 inch diameter ducting system, then you might decide to use another slightly larger duct with an in-line fan to extract
the warm air and send it to the outside atmosphere. This can be supplemented by the use of free standing oscillating fans circulating the grow room air. Should more cooling be needed,in some hot climates for example, then an air cooler can be used. This can be easily made by passing the air over a refrigerated surface like a car radiator with ice cold water running through it.

It goes without saying that when the lights are turned off the temperature will reduce quite rapidly. If your grow room is not very well insulated, this is when you may need to turn on your heaters. Most growers find that it is more efficient to increase the insulation to a point where the heat loss is minimal, rather than spend money on raising the ambient temperature too much.

It is important to remember that any heat source used must not be placed so close to the plants as to burn them. Oil filled radiators and similar systems can be used with good effect.

In order to monitor the system some kind of sensor and switching device will be needed. These control systems are readily available at most suppliers. You will need a sensor for temperature linked to a switch for powering the cooling systems. Do not however rely upon them to never fail. I know of growers who have left their plants unattended for several days, only to return to a dead crop of nearly mature plants. The culprit being
a defunct control unit that allowed the lights to stay on and did not turn on the fans when the temperature climbed.

It is always wise to monitor your plants on a regular daily basis.

Decorating Your Bathroom on a Budget

September 28, 2009 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Maybe you’ve just moved into a new house and you need to make your new bathroom bearable, or maybe you just need a new look for your old bathroom. Either way, it is possible to completely redo your bathroom while on a budget.

First of all, you may be surprised by how improved your bathroom can look just by getting some brand new bath towels and accent towels and bath accessories. And if you have a little extra money, a new coat of paint is nice, too. You don’t need to completely remodel your bathroom to make it look great - you may just need to redecorate.

Fabric can make a big impact on your bathroom. If you have a bathtub, a shower curtain can really add some character and disguise an unseemly bathtub. Window curtains can also improve the look of your bathroom. If you are crafty, you can even go out and buy fabric and sew your own shower curtain and window curtains out of the same fabric - then you just need to buy a shower liner to seal the deal, so to speak. And before checking out the fabric store, you may want to consider using a basic bed sheet - hey, you could even buy the same sheets for your bed and tie the two rooms together!

Fabric can be used in other ways, too. If you have a sink without a cupboard beneath, you can get instant storage space by gathering some fabric and attaching around your sink with something as simple as Velcro.

You can even get some Modge podge and decoupage pieces of fabric to containers that hold your cotton balls and tissues, etc. Of course, you may not want to use that same fabric on all of these items. Sometimes just having a few items that match can be enough - you don’t want the d

Kitchen Cookware and Accessories

Stainless steel is made from iron and other metals, which is strong and resists
against wear and tear. It is inexpensive, long lasting and is most popular in North
America. The metals used in stainless steel or iron, may produce health effects such
as iron, nickel and chromium.

Ceramic pottery, enamel or glass cookware is easily cleaned and can be heated to
fairly high temperatures. Ceramic is glazed; similar glazes are applied to metals to
make enamelware. These glazes, a form of glass, resist wear and corrosion.

For cooking and storing food, plastic is lightweight and nearly unbreakable. Many
containers have been made for use in microwave ovens, where metal cookware is
not suitable.

Stainless steel cookware should be washed in hot, soapy water or a warm ammonia
and water solution, thoroughly rinsed and immediately dried to avoid water spots.
Use mild, stainless steel cleaners or light scouring with a plastic or stainless steel
scouring pad to remove most stains; don’t use steel wool, chlorine bleach or alcohol

Cast iron cookware is usually pre-seasoned coated with unsalted fat and heated to
prevent rusting, unless porcelain coated. It should be washed in warm, sudsy water
and frequently treated by coating the cast iron interior surface with unsalted
shortening, left until its next use, and then wiped out. To re-season, scour the pan
completely, rinse and dry; then coat the inside with unsalted fat and leave in
moderate oven for two hours. Remove and wipe off excess grease

To remove copper cookware discoloration, use commercial cleaner or a mixture of
flour, salt, lemon juice and ammonia applied before regular washing. Wash chrome
cookware with warm water and soap or detergent. Do not use abrasive cleaners.

Home Remodeling Contractors, Homeowners’ Right Hand

September 26, 2009 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Want to reconstruct a part of your house? Do you have plans redesigning your rooms? Do you want to start but don’t know where to begin and what to do? Fret no more because nowadays, there are several companies and professionals who can take care of you and your remodeling needs, these home remodeling contractors are just a click or a phone call away.

Remodeling a house may seem easy but still, homeowners may need the help of experts or skilled individuals who can assist them during their brainstorming times. But homeowners should always remember that they are “the” home owners, and they are the boss of these contractors, so they just shouldn’t say “yes” all the time or nod and agree with the contractors always. As an advice to the homeowners when dealing with these professionals, “don’t let these home remodeling contractors be the boss of you”, because in the first place, they are not the ones who’ll be staying and living in the house after the remodeling, if it’s not properly done then the people who’ll suffer are the homeowners.

These home remodeling contractors serve as advisers and guide but not the real decision makers. So, if you want to have a good and competent contractor, then you have to do your own research and background check. Make sure that he gives you a quote or price of his labor, and make it a point to ask him of his last three work references. If you’re satisfied with his work ethics and work background after a careful research, then try to talk to him about your remodeling plans.

There are some home remodeling contractors who try to suggest or sometimes push their own materials, products and designs, that’s why, homeowners must have a background or an understanding of the on-goings of the reconstruction. This way, they know if the idea of the contractor is well-rooted and correct. They must not depend on the contractors to give them everything because who knows if they are only using these materials and products, just because they get a bigger discount or a higher commission from the supplier.

Home remodeling contractors serve as the right hand of the homeowners in the reconstruction. They are not there to boss the people around, but rather, they are there to assist the homeowners in the details of the remodeling. So, homeowners should always bear in mind that, they need to know and trust the home remodeling contractor they hire or else, they may just get disappointed at the end.

Design Elements

September 25, 2009 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

A well-decorated room can still lack personality. To give your room a personality, choose from among these basic design elements, modify them to suit your tastes and implement them in a way which is just right for you.

1. A Theme - A ‘themed’ room says something about you, the person who has done it, your family or the place where you live. A theme will also provide you a place to showcase your collections, prized possessions, arts and crafts.

There are endless possibilities for using themes, but once you decide upon one, it will give you focus, as it will eliminate many things which don’t fit into it. This results in great ease in shopping, planning, implementing etc. Some best decorated rooms have had themes like Water, Nature, Eighteenth Century England, Contemporary, Ethnic, Pastels etc.

2. Artifacts - A piece of artistic value will always give your room that special touch you have always wanted. It can add texture and depth to a room. Depending upon your theme, the artifact may be an an antique chair, a painted bookshelf, an original painting or even an original watercolor by your local artist.

3. Collections - It is the most effective way to display your collections in a special arrangement. Whether you collect shells, dolls or trinkets, arrange them tastefully instead of just lining things up in a row. Lining things looks even worse when objects are small in size. Instead, group them together to project variety within your collections. Lovely trays, glass cupboards, corner shelves etc. are some ideas for displaying your collections.

4. Color - Color does not get limited to painting the walls of your room. Use colors that make you feel good about them in fabrics, linen, pillows, shelves, curtains etc. Blend colors to suit your style.

Add fabrics to liven up your room with a print that contains the color of your upholstery. To maintain harmony in colors, use the same accent at least THRICE around the same room. For eg. pillows, tablecloths and curtains could have similar accents. For more on using colors, read my article ‘Using Colors in Your Room’.

Use of the above elements will still leave everything to your own imagination and creativity. These will only help you in drawing out a plan for your Home-Decorating exercise. The details of the plan are still left to you to fill up.

Happy Decorating!

Growing Tomatoes A Hobby for Everyone

September 24, 2009 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

It is really a wonderful activity to grow tomatoes around your house. You can retain the tomato on the plant itself till it turns fully ripe. But when you are buying them from the stores or in the market you have to sometimes pick up the raw ones. The ripe ones are not always available.

The following is the procedure of growing tomatoes around your house.

Select a pot that will allow the excessive water to drain away. Then fill the pot with compost. Add about an inch of seeds into it. To allow the seeds to germinate, layer the pot with a plastic cover. Then remove it later and pour water into it till it penetrates the bottom. After a few days you will see a small growth. Keep the pot under the sunlight so that it grows rapidly.

When you observe a proper growth, shift the plant to a new pot. Possibly plant it besides a shrub or near a tree so that it is protected from the strong wind. Provide the essential nutrients for the normal growth. Use fertilizers almost after every month and water them at least twice a day.

Wait for about 4-6 weeks to let the tomatoes grow in full shape. If the temperature falls to 50 degrees Fahrenheit then cover it up.

Creating A Cool Atmosphere

September 23, 2009 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Sometimes I wonder what I would do if the air-condition of my apartment decided one day to stop working. Early during summer time, when the temperature begins to rise and I seek comfort against the heat that makes me feel exhausted by placing ice-cubes across my forehead. This time, as I was expecting a technician from the apartment building I live in to come for the necessary AC unit’s maintenance, before I was able to use it, I examined some interesting facts about air-conditions that I wish to share.

Most people are surprised to learn that buying a bigger air conditioning unit will not necessarily make them feel more comfortable during the hot summer months. In fact, a room air conditioner that is too big for the area it is supposed to cover and control its temperature, will perform less efficiently and effectively than a smaller, properly sized unit. The reason behind this is that air-conditions work better if they are operated for longer periods of time than if they are switched on and off continuously. In fact, longer run times allow air-conditions to control better the room temperature keeping it constant and cool. In addition, if they operate for longer periods of time, they can reduce the excess amount of moisture from the air making people feel cooler and comfortable. For extra cooling advice, read the following tips.

- Change Your Air Filter: Dealing with indoor air quality most effectively means filtering or cleaning all the air in the home using the air-condition system.

- The Right AC Temperature: Set your thermostat as high as comfortably possible during the summer months. The less difference between the indoor and outdoor temperatures, the lower your overall cooling bill will be. Remember that you should not set your thermostat at a lower (colder) setting than normal only during the first half an hour you turn on your air-conditioner. This practice will not cool your home any faster and if it results in excessive cooling it will be an unnecessary expense.

- The Fan Speed: If the weather is not very humid, set the fan speed on high, while when it is humid set the fan speed on low. This way you will get better cooling, and a slower air movement through the cooling equipment as it allows more moisture to be removed from the air, resulting in greater comfort.

- The Extra Fan: Using an interior fan in conjunction with your air-conditioner will spread the cooled air more effectively through your home without greatly increasing the energy usage levels.

- Heat Producers: Avoid placing lamps or TV sets near your air-conditioning thermostat, as it senses the heat produced by these appliances, leading the air-conditioner to run longer than necessary and its efficient level to decrease.

- Protect the AC: If you have access to the part of the air-condition unit that is placed outdoors, consider planting trees or shrubs to shade it, but be careful not to block the airflow. As experts point out, a unit operating in the shade uses as much as 10 percent less electricity than the one operating directly under the sun.

DIY House Moves Five Ways to Make Sure Your Stuff Stays Intact

September 22, 2009 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

With 20 moves in 25 years, I’ve learned a thing or two about moving house. Here are five steps you can take to make sure that all your belongings arrive with you.

1. Wrap it up

To avoid breakages, wrap your fragile items very carefully. The best packing items are newsprint and bubble wrap. If you can get it, beg or buy large sheets of unprinted newsprint or ends of rolls from your local printer. (When we did this, the roll we got saw us through three moves). If you can’t you’ll have to start saving your Sunday newspapers (the bigger, the better) the minute you put your house on the market.

Bubble wrap is also a safe, clean alternative, and if you get bored, you can pop a few bubbles while you wrap. Electrical items are best transported in their own packaging if you’ve got it, or bubble wrap if you haven’t. Sharp knives and toasting forks should also be wrapped so no-one gets hurt. All mattresses should be wrapped, otherwise you’ll be sleeping on dirt for years. They’re quite heavy, and you’ll usually drop at least one corner. Black garbage bags and packing tape are useful for wrapping large items such as these, but even better are big dust sheets from your local hardware store.

2. Get stuffed

Cups, mugs and glasses should be stuffed inside before being wrapped. That provides an extra layer of protection. Anything with a delicate handle should have that wrapped separately before wrapping the whole item. Lids to milk jugs, sugar bowls and teapots should be wrapped separately. And remember, with wrapping, more is more: the more stuff you put around your stuff, the more likely it is to survive the move intact. I haven’t lost a cup yet.

3. Space saver

Line the bottoms and tops of your crockery boxes, as well as any nooks and crannies with old tea towels. This provides more protection for your breakables and packs the towels as well, and you’ll have the satisfaction of having killed two birds with one stone.

4. Open spaces

OK, there are a lot of items you won’t be able to do without, but that doesn’t mean you have to leave the packing till the last minute. Pack your canned foods in boxes but don’t seal them. That way, you can easily get hold of something you suddenly find you need.

5. Delete the junk

When you’re moving things out of the loft or basement, use this as an opportunity to clear out anything you haven’t needed in the last two years. If you don’t need it, why move it? The same goes for the garage (does anyone keep a car in there?) and for the garden shed. Be ruthless, or you’ll end up with backache for nothing and have to throw it away on the other side. Moving is also a good excuse for ‘losing’ that unwanted gift from five years ago.

Final words

Follow these five steps and all your stuff should arrive safely. Happy moving!

New Furniture Can be Comfy Too

September 21, 2009 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

You’ve just moved into a new house and suddenly the comfy old furniture you’ve cherished for yearsokay, decades - just doesn’t seem to work any more. Do you give up the comfy old stuff for new furniture? The truth is that you don’t have to choose. You can buy new furniture that is comfortable if you know how to shop.

Start with the living room. If you’ve had your couch, loveseat, or sectional for more than 10 years, chances are you need to rethink your furniture needs. Do you have a small child now who has trouble getting on or off of a couch that didn’t seem too wide when you bought it? Is your sofa apartment-sized to fit into your first place, but it seems out of proportion now in your new home? Take size and width of seating into consideration when buying. And the only way to know if it’s comfortable is to sit on it. If you plan to nap on your couch, lay on it right in the furniture showroom. Don’t be afraid to test the level of comfort.

Looking for a chair or recliner? Take your shoes off and sit in it like you would at home. If you usually tuck your feet under you, that’s how you should sit when you try out the furniture. See just how far back that recliner will lean back or just how hard the rocker can rock. While you’re trying out the potential new furniture, note whether it’s comfortable or not. If it’s not, don’t buy it. Move on. Furniture is not like shoes or jeans. You shouldn’t buy them with the hope of breaking them in for comfort over a period of time. The new furniture should be comfortable as well as functional upon purchase.

Moving to the dining area you’ll need to take into consideration your table and seating needs. A family of five probably won’t be comfortable squeezing around a breakfast style bar built for two. Likewise, a couple who seldom entertains and is years away from planning a family might not want to take up space with a table that accommodates eight. Know your needs. Know your likes as far as colors and styles. Then, have a seat. Again, it’s the only way to know if your new furniture is going to be comfortable.

No one really likes to lie on a bed in a furniture showroom, but if you are going to buy one it’s a must. Do you usually sleep on your belly? Crawl up on the bed and lie as you would if you were asleep. Roll around. How does it feel? Don’t buy the first one just because it felt okay. The next one might feel better and still the third might feel great!

If you are furnishing a home office, the same tips apply. Sit in the chair. Pull up under the desk. Pull out all the drawers and compartments you can find. Will the printer be within comfortable reach?

Keeping your house comfortable furnished doesn’t mean giving up style. And giving in to style, doesn’t mean that you can’t have comfortable new furniture!
