How To Bring Your Living Room To Life

July 31, 2009 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Do you like what you have but dont like your room? Heres the solution: pull your rooms together so they look finished and professionally decorated by following these techniques to add the wow to your rooms! (Ive used them in hundreds of homes!).

1. Paint the walls and ceiling a rich, warm neutral color or one of the colors in your rooms fabrics. Your furnishings will immediately look more at home. I call it marrying your architecture to your furnishings.

2. Next, move your seating away from the walls and group it around a fireplace, a view window or any logical focal point.

3. Now, add a generous area rug to accent and unify your entire seating area.

4. Fill any empty looking corners with large plants and soft up-lights. Add a decorative, folding screen for a fuller look.

5. Place your lamps to evenly and softly light your seating area. Use additional lighting to accent your artwork, collections and accessories.

6. Create a focal point on the coffee table by elevating one of your favorite accessories on a stack of several books (sans covers). This will give your treasure more presence. Then add a low, full green plant or a blooming orchid and a couple of large, glowing candles. If you like a fuller look, use a decorative tray or runner underneath.

7. Lastly, be sure to decorate the top half of your room (from the furniture up), with tall plants, window treatments, artwork and that wall color. The room will feel considerably larger, more interesting and most importantly finished!

These few changes will make all the difference so you can start enjoying living in a beautiful home!

When I bought this cart, it did not say unfinished in the title. Apparently, my e-mail changed their deceptive advertising. First of all, the company does not stand behind their product. Our product came with a broken board. Well, this product came while we were on vacation and after the shock of finding out that it was unfinished and trying to figure out how to finish it, we did not inspect everything for a couple of weeks. The company only gives you 24 hours to inspect the product and let them know if anything is broken. However, they don’t tell you this in any of the packaging. So, if we want to get a replacement board, we have to pay to have it shipped to us. I have never met a business that has a 24 hour return policy. Most businesses have a 30 day return policy. Secondly, this product is not quality furniture. Besides the broken board, most of the pieces have gouges and knicks all over it. The wood on the drawers where you have to connect things is so thin that, even being extra careful, three drawers broke as we were trying to connect them. So, we basically have a broken, glued together, useless piece of junk that is an eyesore. This is not worth the 114 dollars plus the 80 bucks in paint and painting supplies it took to finish this eyesore. The company also was very curt in their e-mails and have done nothing to provide recompense for this piece of junk. The only thing that has changed is the advertising of the product, which is good for other people, but not us. I regret the day I bought this product. There are much better cabinets out there that might cost more money, but they are probably better quality and finished when you receive them.

How To Keep Your Wooden Fencing in Tip-Top Shape

July 31, 2009 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Putting in a wooden fence around your lawn or garden adds a decorative accent that many will find attractive. However, your fence may soon lose its appeal if you don’t keep it up with regular care and maintenance. Some fencing materials, like vinyl or aluminum, require their own brand of upkeep. But wooden fences benefit most from routine scraping, painting, and sealing. Plan for this annual or bi-annual maintenance when budgeting the cost for new wooden fencing.

Of course, if you can do the work instead of hiring it out, you can some substantial costs. But if you cannot, you will need to factor in the labor costs of caring for your fence. In addition, you need to cover the cost of supplies, including the paint or sealant products, along with equipment needed to do the work.

Check your fence every few months for peeling, splintering, mold, or breakage. Insect nests are another potential problem, along with knotholes where birds may be nesting. If you decide to treat the nesting areas, do so humanely, for the birds at least. Otherwise, you may wish to leave these areas alone and concentrate on actual damage to the wood. Look for signs of termite infestation, and call an exterminator if you find them. Manage pest problems before they get bigger, or you could end up paying a premium for pest control.

Depending on the style of wooden fence you have, you may want to sand off rough edges or remove protruding fragments that could cause splinters, especially if you have children or pets that are likely to play on or around the fencing. For split-rail fences, a natural look works well, but you still may need to check for problem areas that need to be treated with fungicide, herbicide, or pesticide.

Painted fences should be touched up every year or two. You will probably have to scrape away flakes and chips to get a smooth finish before repainting. You also may want to seal the fence with a product that will help to protect and preserve it. There are several on the market, so check with your local home supply outlet for details on what to buy and how to apply it.

When painting your fence, buy the right kind of outdoor paint, along with primer, if needed. You might want to put up a string barrier along the fence that you have painted to keep it from being bothered until it dries. If you are painting a wooden fence for the first time, you will want to match or at least coordinate it with other colors in your outdoor decorating scheme. These may include your porch, house door, window shutters, or shed. Otherwise, a neutral color like white, brown, or red should work well for many kinds of outdoor fences.

Even though your fence may be used for mostly functional purposes, like keeping neighborhood dogs away or protecting a parking area, it doesn’t hurt to make the fence attractive and aesthetically appealing. Check out your decorating options at your local home supply store.

Bedroom Decorating

July 30, 2009 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

When decorating a bedroom, keep in mind that the end result should produce a disitnct and memorable impression. Colors, space and decorations all set a bedroom’s mood, and when put together well, can create a definite, pleasurable look.

When it comes to the arrangement of items in a bedroom, symmetry is the most important factor. The bedroom is your personal space and should not be cluttered with too many objects creating a claustrophobic effect. For a room to seem personal, special touches should be added that reflect your special loves and interests. This includes your favorite colors, books, photographs, etc. Make sure colors are balanced in subtle shades reflecting your lifestyle and interests. The older generation seems to prefer more subdued shades than the younger generation, who opt for bright, textured colors. To maintain balance, the color of a chair placed at one end of the room can be repeated on throw, pillows or carpet.

Furniture in the bedroom is of utmost importance. Don’t over do it with too many pieces making your bedroom look overdressed and cluttered. The size of the bed should be in proportion to the size of the bedroom. What matters the most is comfort. Therefore, a bed should offer quality, comfort and a feeling of elegance. Nightstands or side tables should be on either side of the bed for books, medications and telephone. A dressing table comes in handy for women, and dressers with lots of storage space are ideal. Ample closet space is important, as are mirrors and wall decor. Mirrors help to give a room a larger look and also help to reflect light. Lighting should be gentle and relaxing. Valence lighting is ideal for bedrooms, and colored lights can be used for added effects. Subtle light gives a romantic feeling to the room, and focused light is good for detail work like reading without disturbing someone sleeping in the room.

Finally, a bedroom should be well-ventilated, designed for comfort and always stocked with a vase of flowers for a fresh feeling.

Why A Mattress Pad Matters

July 29, 2009 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Do mattress pads really do anything? What good are they? Well, if you’ve ever wondered if you need one, find out here!

A mattress pad can make any mattress a great deal more comfortable. By placing extra padding on top of the regular mattress, softness can be added without removing the support of the mattress. These pads are usually one to three inches in depth and are made for several different materials which we will discuss.

Most popular types of mattress pads are:

Memory foam pad- newer product that may ring a bell. The memory foam mattresses have received a great deal of television advertising and, while they look very appealing, they are not inexpensive. Recently, a thin pad version of this mattress has appeared on the market at a much more affordable price.

This pad is about 3 inches in depth and it has all the attributes of the memory foam mattress. The foam adjusts to the pressure placed on it so that there is no undue pressure on different areas of the body. This type of pad is very popular with anyone looking for additional comfort. If you don’t have a pillow-top mattress but want that comfy feel, this pad may save you from purchasing a new mattress.

Egg crate- pad that looks as if you could store eggs in it. The foam hard depressions and raised areas that provide a bit more softness when placed over a hard mattress. The person who suffers from arthritis can frequently find sleeping much more comfortable with the addition of this type of pad on the mattress.

Egg crate pads are inexpensive and readily available. To install this type of pad on the mattress, first remove the bed sheets. Place the unrolled pad on top of the mattress and smooth it into place. If the bed is for a patient, a waterproof barrier may need to be placed over the pad where the most likely soiling could occur. Then place the fitted sheet back on the mattress. It will fit a bit more snugly than before and stay on the bed very well. Then you can remake the bed with the other bedding and it is ready for use.

Latex- if someone has incontinence problems or if you have children that are going through the stage where accidents can occur at night, latex pads can protect the mattress from stains and allow you to keep the mattress sanitary and odor-free.

Wool, down or feather pads- can make a cold bed warm and cozy. These pads, especially the down pads, also offer some added padding to help achy hips, shoulders, backs and other painful problems.

Pre-warming- these electric pads work very much like an electric blanket but are on the mattress rather than over the sleeper. No more cold feet when you jump into bed. Wintertime chills run and hide very soon after you turn your electric mattress covering onto the desired setting. Some people like to sleep with the pad on; others prefer simply to use this as a pre-heating device.

Alternating pressure pad- used on a mattress for the truly bed-ridden patient. This plastic pad is placed on the mattress and is constructed of baffled tubes or sections which are filled with air or water. The pad is connected to an electric pump and the pump inflates, deflates and changes the pressure in each section at regular intervals. This can help heal a bed sore or completely prevent bed sores from occurring.

This type of medical device pad can be obtained from a medical supply house and you should learn how to properly operate the device from the professionals who provide the equipment. Some medical supply houses will rent this type of pad for the use by those who must lie on their mattresses all day and night.

No matter what situation best describes your particular needs, you’ll find the perfect mattress pad to fill your nights with better sleep and comfort!

Patricia Bowlin informs and entertains you as you shop for home bedding! Find out everything you need to know about chosing the perfect pillows, comforters, and bedding here now.

Product is excellent for temporary room darkening (or even more permanent if you are careful about installing and perhaps enhancing with minimal window treatment.) However, please be warned about the packaging. Each of 5 shades came in its own box that was HUGE and loaded with paper. Completely unnecessary as all five could have fit in ONE box 1/3 of the size. It took me 45 minutes to unpack and get rid of all the packaging so I could leave the house (the five boxes completely blocked my entryway.) I was LIVID and will NEVER order these from Amazon again. I do want more and will go through another retailer. This is obviously the work of a disgruntled or zero-IQ employee that is trying to ruin Amazon’s otherwise great track record. I had read another review mentioning this, but trust me NOTHing can prepare you for the insanity of this packaging. And, to make matters worse, one of the shades was bent! Completely ridiculous. Bottom line: buy these, but NOT FROM AMAZON

I have allergies and have used Redi Shades for over 4 years, have used the cordless and the ones with the cord. I like the cordless best. The are easy to cut and easy to hang.

On windows that get usage and because I live in the south, (Hot here) sometimes the tape at the top of the blinds gradually come loose, so I just take a small piece of duct tape and place on center and corners when I first put up, then it doesn’t make any difference how hot it gets, it won’t come loose.

They are wonderful temporary shades, gives your room a nice look from the outside and you can replace as often as the dust requires. I would never go back to using regular blinds after using Redi Shades. In addition, the price is very reasonable.

Try them, you will not be disappointed.

If you are wanting to truly darken your room, take a white garbage bag and tape it across your window (so it looks okay from the outside). Cover with Expensive Dark Green Garbage bags (they are darker than cheap) (hang long across, use tape if in apartment or use tacks if in your own place to secure them. Then so your room looks nice, hang your room darkening Redi Shade.

You room will be really dark. My husband said our bedroom is like a cave. LOL.

I love them!

I have used this in my daughter’s room and in my living room for the past two summers and it makes a huge difference on the power bill.

The late afternoon sun & 20′ ceilings in my living room make it more like an oven than a living area. I put these shades underneath the mini blnds for 1/2 of the windows in the room. Before I used these my AC couldn’t keep up to keep the house at 73 degrees. It would always get up to 77 or 78. With these on though, it is so cool & comfortable.

What’s even greater is that I can take them down once summer is over and put them back up the following year.

They are very EASY to install - less than 10 minutes.

***I highly recommend that you clean the area that the adhesive strip will stick to with alcohol before you hang these. A clean area helps the adhesiveness last longer.

Review date : 2008-05-18
These are inexpensive, easy to install, and they reduce the heat in my living room when used with my darker damask curtains which cooked the room when used alone. These don’t block the sunlight, they just reduce the light entering; they also are not high quality permanent-type blinds, I just use them in the summer to reduce interior heat.
I ordered 2 and Amazon sent each of them in its own 3 1/2′x2′x2′ box, the dimension of the blind is about 3′x2"x2". Lots of wasted space and packing material.

Review date : 2008-05-14
Easy to trim down to size. Easy to use and look great. I’m thinking of buying more but the HUGE BOX each shade comes in is ridiculous. THey should ship them together in one box.
