Kitchen Countertops - An Overview

June 27, 2009 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Countertops can influence the total design of your kitchen. One of the most common reasons home owners remodel their kitchen is due to lack of usable counter space.

When you are remodeling your kitchen a new countertop gives the whole room a facelift. There are several types of kitchen countertops you can choose from.

1. Laminate Countertops - Some good things about laminate countertops are you can install them yourself, they are inexpensive, they are low maintenance, and you can find them in all kinds of colors.

On the other hand, you need to be careful with knives and hot pans because once a laminate countertop is damaged it is almost impossible to repair.

2. Ceramic Tile Countertops - These countertops can also be easily installed and they come in lots of colors and patterns, they are heat resistant, and easy to clean.

But ceramic tile countertops can be a tough surface to chop on and they can crack or chip.

3. Stone Countertops - These countertops are very durable, look great, and the granite ones also clean up quite easily.

On the down side you must regularly seal and polish them so they look good, and if your stone countertop is made of marble you need to be extra careful because of staining.

4. Stainless Steel Countertops - Stains are not a problem and the counter can take high temperatures without damage.

But you have to take some care when installing stainless steel because if they are not extremely well supported they can dent. They also are prone to showing scratches and nicks.

5. Butcher Block Countertops - They give your kitchen that warm feeling that only wood can give, your knives won’t dull, and you can smooth out any scratches with sandpaper.

On the other hand you must use vegetable oil regularly to treat the wood and keep it looking good. Also too much water exposure can stain and rot the counter.

6. Solid Surface Countertops - Lots of plus’s here, you can find a ton of patterns and colors and some styles look like granite or other stone choices, it is very durable, easy to clean, and with this type of countertop you can easily install custom integrated sinks.

But you will need a licensed contractor to install this type of countertop or you will void the warranty and you must be careful with your hot pots and pans.

7. Soapstone Countertops - These are very beautiful and they don’t stain. Hot pans are also not a problem.

You do need to seal them with mineral oil quite often, and they are more likely to be scratched than granite.

8. Lavastone Countertops - Awesome countertops, they can resist water damage, scratches, and hot pans superbly.

But lavastone counters can be hard to find and they are very expensive.

So now that you know a little more about the materials kitchen countertops can be made of it should be easier to narrow down your choices when installing your new kitchen counters

How To Bring Your Living Room To Life

June 26, 2009 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Do you like what you have but dont like your room? Heres the solution: pull your rooms together so they look finished and professionally decorated by following these techniques to add the wow to your rooms! (Ive used them in hundreds of homes!).

1. Paint the walls and ceiling a rich, warm neutral color or one of the colors in your rooms fabrics. Your furnishings will immediately look more at home. I call it marrying your architecture to your furnishings.

2. Next, move your seating away from the walls and group it around a fireplace, a view window or any logical focal point.

3. Now, add a generous area rug to accent and unify your entire seating area.

4. Fill any empty looking corners with large plants and soft up-lights. Add a decorative, folding screen for a fuller look.

5. Place your lamps to evenly and softly light your seating area. Use additional lighting to accent your artwork, collections and accessories.

6. Create a focal point on the coffee table by elevating one of your favorite accessories on a stack of several books (sans covers). This will give your treasure more presence. Then add a low, full green plant or a blooming orchid and a couple of large, glowing candles. If you like a fuller look, use a decorative tray or runner underneath.

7. Lastly, be sure to decorate the top half of your room (from the furniture up), with tall plants, window treatments, artwork and that wall color. The room will feel considerably larger, more interesting and most importantly finished!

These few changes will make all the difference so you can start enjoying living in a beautiful home!

Using Rocks In Landscaping

June 26, 2009 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Rock formations can provide very interesting visual effects as part of a home landscaping project. A rock formation will give you areas for planting that will highlight properly chosen plants. You can create waterfalls, retaining walls, and use rocks to provide a path through the garden.

Before placing the rocks in their position there are a few things to consider and do.

Considerations:

If you have an underground sprinkler system, are the heads clear of the proposed rock positions and will the rocks block the water exiting the sprinkler head from reaching any required areas.

Have you buried any pipes for a water service? If you are planning on burying any piping, do it before you place the rocks. Rocks are not something that you want to have to move once they are placed. Now is the time to consider a drip irrigation system if you are planning on a planting in the proposed rock garden areas. Drip irrigation works extremely well in rock gardens.

Do you have buried electrical conduit? Consider spot and flood lighting that will highlight the rock placement within the landscaping and where you will obtain the power feed for that lighting.

Working safely is critical when dealing with objects that are heavy and awkward to handle. Safety boots with steel toes are imperative as are a pair of properly fitting gloves.

To Do:

Wash the rocks before placing them in position. Most rocks will have porous areas and these areas may have collected insects or other bacteria that may be harmful to the plants in the garden. Use a brush and some bleach and then hose them off.

At least 20% of the rock should be buried below ground level. This not only ensures that the rock will not move, but gives an improved visual image. Rocks should not appear to have been placed in position, they should appear as if they have been there forever.

Customer Reviews

Review date : 2008-07-26
When I bought this cart, it did not say unfinished in the title. Apparently, my e-mail changed their deceptive advertising. First of all, the company does not stand behind their product. Our product came with a broken board. Well, this product came while we were on vacation and after the shock of finding out that it was unfinished and trying to figure out how to finish it, we did not inspect everything for a couple of weeks. The company only gives you 24 hours to inspect the product and let them know if anything is broken. However, they don’t tell you this in any of the packaging. So, if we want to get a replacement board, we have to pay to have it shipped to us. I have never met a business that has a 24 hour return policy. Most businesses have a 30 day return policy. Secondly, this product is not quality furniture. Besides the broken board, most of the pieces have gouges and knicks all over it. The wood on the drawers where you have to connect things is so thin that, even being extra careful, three drawers broke as we were trying to connect them. So, we basically have a broken, glued together, useless piece of junk that is an eyesore. This is not worth the 114 dollars plus the 80 bucks in paint and painting supplies it took to finish this eyesore. The company also was very curt in their e-mails and have done nothing to provide recompense for this piece of junk. The only thing that has changed is the advertising of the product, which is good for other people, but not us. I regret the day I bought this product. There are much better cabinets out there that might cost more money, but they are probably better quality and finished when you receive them.

Planning Your Garden from Scratch - the Planting

June 25, 2009 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

“Planting” is the term professional gardeners use for..plants. In other words, trees, shrubs, grasses, bedding plants, etc. and there are endless varieties to choose from. The easiest thing to do is to buy a book with a reference list in it showing the soil type, sun/shade and watering requirements. You can’t plant something which hates bright sunlight alongside something that won’t survive without it, so give it some thought at the outset. Most books also divide their listings into Trees and Shrubs, Climbers, Perennials, Annuals

I’m going to concentrate on flower-beds for the purposes of this article. If you want to grow vegetables and fruit, you will need a separate area which will need different treatment.

  • Trees. Be very careful if you have a small garden. Trees have a habit of growing out of control, casting too much shade and their roots may end up digging up your drains. If you must have trees, choose something which doesn’t grow too tall, too quickly. Bear in mind that some trees, such as lilac, need dead-heading once the flowers are finished.
  • Shrubs. Some shrubs have flowers and some don’t, some are evergreen and some aren’t. In the main, they need pruning to keep a tidy shape, about once a year but otherwise are fairly forgiving.
  • Roses provide lovely colour but they do need a little care. Dead flowers must be removed and spraying against a variety of pests and diseases is almost always needed. Some varieties have been bred to be disease-resistant, so for less effort, choose one of these.
  • Perennials. Perennials do nothing for the first year if you grow them from seed so you will need a nursery bed or buy them ready to plant from a garden centre. They will, however, reappear year after year for about 3 or 4 years when they will wear out and need replacing. Some perennials can be split at the end of flowering to increase your stocks. Dead-heading prolongs the flowering period.
  • Annuals are lovely for a splash of colour and unless left to seed themselves will need replacing every year. They are great for growing in pots or hanging baskets and they bloom for far longer if dead flowers are removed so are somewhat labour intensive. Don’t grow perennials or annuals in other than a raised bed, if you have a bad back!
  • Bulbs and corms. These vary tremendously. Some can be left in the ground year after year with little attention and some need to be dug up and stored. When choosing, consider what storage facilities are available. You won’t want dahlia tubers living in the cupboard under your stairs.

The easiest way to start is to draw a plan of your garden and divide the beds into manageable areas. On your plan, mark each bed as to the light it gets and whether there is any shade (full, dappled) and the state of the soil (e.g. dry, boggy, etc.).

Next, decide whether you want to have formal colour-schemes for the whole garden or individual beds. Do you want a “shrubbery” or a “rose garden” or are you going to mix everything in together?

If you already have pergolas or trellises in place then you obviously anticipate growing climbing plants, so mark these in on your plan.

For beds which have a boundary fence or wall, work from the back in terms of plant height. There’s no point planting something which will ultimately be four feet tall in front of something which never reaches more than two feet. Bear in mind that plants bush out. When I first started gardening, I was so keen to fill all the spaces that I had to keep moving plants around as they became larger and overcrowded.

Circular beds (for example in the middle of lawns) look best with plants of similar height but if you want some tall and some short, work from the centre towards the edges.

Whichever style of bed you have, remember that you’re going to have to reach those plants at the back or in the centre, in order to prune or dead-head them so leave a bit of room to manoeuvre. Better still, put down some flat stones which you can stand on while working in the bed.

When you’ve decided on the plants you want and have marked them on your plan, make a note of the planting requirements (depth, distance apart), feeding and watering regime and ongoing care (e.g. pruning). You’ll be glad of this organisation when you come to actually putting the stuff in the ground.

Look out for the next article on preparing your beds and actually doing the planting.
