I borrowed one of these from a friend to pull the dandelions from my yard and I loved how effective it was. I had to buy one of my own. I’ve pulled weeds with roots up to a foot long - and I didn’t have to worry about using poisins near my gardens. It does leave a hole but you can fill it very easily.

Was fairly disappointed in this product’s performance. Have to place it Just Right and soil needs to be Just So - otherwise wind up yanking away at branches of weed and not the weed itself.

I’m a novice gardener and have become the steward of a sadly overgrown garden. I bought this blindly after having spent a day kneeling and ripping up weeds by hand. I lucked out! What a great product. It’s solidly constructed and has some real heft to it. I did have some issues getting used to how it worked at first. After a while, I got the rhythm and had a blast destroying unsuspecting dandelions and milkweed. I sure hope the neighbors didn’t hear me as I laughed maniacally at the death of those weedy invaders!

Why knock off a star? I did find that a little twisting motion applied as I pulled up slowly helped to get the entire root system. I also noted that sometimes the hound got a little greedy at times and pulled up a lot of soil. I just knocked it off and pushed it back into the divot. And finally, the metal sometimes gets a little stuck and tough to release if I get a little to carried away with weed assassination. I really had to whack it to get it to work again- but keeping that in mind prevented further issues. I also bet I could squirt a little WD40 in there to get it moving again.

All in all- absolutely worth the money!

I think that this works great. I love it and have not put down any bad chems to get rid of weeds.

Review date : 2008-05-08
The design concept is good but this tool needs some reconfiguration before it’s truly effective.

1. The pulling tines should be a bit longer. (They aren’t long enough to grab on and pull up the whole dandelion root, even in wet soil.)

2. The diameter of the base of the tines (where they are mounted) needs to be about 1/4 inch more. (Would give a better chance of grabbing onto the root as the exact center of a dandelion is sometimes hard to eyeball.)

3. Shaft of tool needs to be about 3 inches longer. (So the tool-user doesn’t have to bend over so much to use this thing.)

Caring for Laminate Flooring

May 28, 2009 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Laminate flooring gives your floor that overall look of wood that can be enjoyed for years to come. The best thing about laminate flooring is the ease in care that you have when you have it in your home. Laminate flooring is one that will look like wood, and that will feel like wood but often times is a bi product of wood. Real wood will require waxing and cleaning every year to keep the floor shiny. Real wood flooring is going to be sanded down and varnished again as the shine is worn off the flooring. Laminate flooring is going to require no waxing, no sanding and the wear and tear on the flooring is something that is not going to happen in the manner that the coating on other wood flooring will have.

Laminate flooring can be cared for by using a dry dust mop on the floor for every day cleaning. During those times when you feel that you need a good deeper clean, you can use a wet mop, one that is not really all that wet, to clean up sticky messes or to clean up mud from the floor. You don’t want to use that much water on the floor so you don’t have the water seeping down into the laminate flooring and then the laminate flooring is going to warp over time.

Laminate floor care is going to be similar to wood or any other type of flooring when it comes to moving furniture across the flooring. Laminate flooring can be scratched, dented and can be marked up when you are not careful in moving those heaviest of furniture pieces in your home. To prevent and care for your flooring, you want to pick up the furniture and move it from location to location.

Don’t drag the furniture across the flooring. Your laminate flooring that has marks and cuts in it will need a little extra care to get that mark out, and sometimes if the cut is all that deep you can’t get it out no matter how much buffing you were to do on this area. The same goes for wood flooring, if the cut is too deep or the scratch is too deep, you are not going to be able to cover it up.

Laminate flooring is easy to care for because the seams in the flooring are actually very tight. You won’t find all types of cracks in the flooring for food, for water, or for dirt to get trapped in. Laminate flooring is a type that will not allow things down between the rows, when you care for it daily. Sweeping and dusting your flooring with a broom, a swiffer or a vacuum that is not hard on the floor is what you need to care for the laminate flooring. You only want to mop your flooring when it is really sticky, when you spill something on the floor, but you don’t even need to wax laminate flooring which is what makes it so popular!

How To Bring Your Living Room To Life

May 27, 2009 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Do you like what you have but dont like your room? Heres the solution: pull your rooms together so they look finished and professionally decorated by following these techniques to add the wow to your rooms! (Ive used them in hundreds of homes!).

1. Paint the walls and ceiling a rich, warm neutral color or one of the colors in your rooms fabrics. Your furnishings will immediately look more at home. I call it marrying your architecture to your furnishings.

2. Next, move your seating away from the walls and group it around a fireplace, a view window or any logical focal point.

3. Now, add a generous area rug to accent and unify your entire seating area.

4. Fill any empty looking corners with large plants and soft up-lights. Add a decorative, folding screen for a fuller look.

5. Place your lamps to evenly and softly light your seating area. Use additional lighting to accent your artwork, collections and accessories.

6. Create a focal point on the coffee table by elevating one of your favorite accessories on a stack of several books (sans covers). This will give your treasure more presence. Then add a low, full green plant or a blooming orchid and a couple of large, glowing candles. If you like a fuller look, use a decorative tray or runner underneath.

7. Lastly, be sure to decorate the top half of your room (from the furniture up), with tall plants, window treatments, artwork and that wall color. The room will feel considerably larger, more interesting and most importantly finished!

These few changes will make all the difference so you can start enjoying living in a beautiful home!

Hydroponics Gardening - An Introduction To Hydroponics Gardening For Beginners (part 13) Oxygen

May 27, 2009 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

How Oxygen Keeps Your Plants Thriving!

Oxygen is used in large quantities by plants. If you were to analyse a dried plant you would find that about 45% consisted of Oxygen atoms. Just like humans, plants need fresh air and their cells use Oxygen in the same kind of quantities that ours do. In air conditions with a low concentration of Oxygen, or where the air is poor, plants do not thrive. Those that do manage to eke out an existence remain poor stunted specimens.

The leaves of a plant have easy access to Oxygen. They make it as a natural bi-product of the process of producing plant sugars
and breathe it out as waste during the process of photosynthesis.

The roots of the plant do not have the same amount of Oxygen available to them. They have to work a lot harder to find enough for their needs. Insufficient Oxygen at the roots will reduce the plants root respiration and result in the shutting down of photosynthesis.

A plant’s growth and its yield are governed by the size and health of its root system. It can only grow to its full potential if the roots have enough Oxygen for their needs. In plants grown hydroponically this essential ingredient is supplied dissolved in the nutrient solution.

Dissolved Oxygen in the nutrient solution can be measured by a DO meter. These are available from all good hydroponics equipment suppliers.

The amount of Oxygen dissolved in the solution will vary depending on both temperature and pressure. The warmer the water the lower the gaseous content will be. Really cold fresh water has a DO reading of up to 14 ppm or 14mg/litre, while water at 30 degrees centigrade can only hold about 5ppm or 5 mg/l DO.

This DO only amounts to a very small percentage of the roots needs. All water culture systems have to utilise some other form of oxygenation for the roots as well as DO in the nutrient. Root systems that have insufficient Oxygen available will soon turn brown and become very sick.

We aerate the nutrient in our systems in order to get the best saturation that we can, (from 5ppm to 8ppm) but the main function of this aeration is to kill off the anaerobic bacteria around the roots. Anaerobic bacteria are pathogens that cannot survive in an oxygenated environment; (Anaerobic meaning without air).

Because the dissolved Oxygen in the nutrient can only supply about 1% of the roots requirements, the balance must be made up by breathing air. This air is trapped within the soil in conventional gardening and in the growing medium in normal hydroponics systems. This Oxygen search uses up energy that the plant could better use to produce root growth.

The only type of system where this does not happen is the aeroponics system. The aerated water being sprayed directly onto the roots, allows the plant to take in free Oxygen from the surrounding air, while still keeping the roots moist and supplied with nutrient.

One of the functions of Oxygen is to facilitate the exchange of nutrients and gasses between the plant roots and the surrounding solution. It does this by changing the electrical charges within the water, so allowing the roots to absorb the available nutrients with the least expenditure of energy. For this reason, if no other, the roots need all the Oxygen they can get.

Product is excellent for temporary room darkening (or even more permanent if you are careful about installing and perhaps enhancing with minimal window treatment.) However, please be warned about the packaging. Each of 5 shades came in its own box that was HUGE and loaded with paper. Completely unnecessary as all five could have fit in ONE box 1/3 of the size. It took me 45 minutes to unpack and get rid of all the packaging so I could leave the house (the five boxes completely blocked my entryway.) I was LIVID and will NEVER order these from Amazon again. I do want more and will go through another retailer. This is obviously the work of a disgruntled or zero-IQ employee that is trying to ruin Amazon’s otherwise great track record. I had read another review mentioning this, but trust me NOTHing can prepare you for the insanity of this packaging. And, to make matters worse, one of the shades was bent! Completely ridiculous. Bottom line: buy these, but NOT FROM AMAZON

I have allergies and have used Redi Shades for over 4 years, have used the cordless and the ones with the cord. I like the cordless best. The are easy to cut and easy to hang.

On windows that get usage and because I live in the south, (Hot here) sometimes the tape at the top of the blinds gradually come loose, so I just take a small piece of duct tape and place on center and corners when I first put up, then it doesn’t make any difference how hot it gets, it won’t come loose.

They are wonderful temporary shades, gives your room a nice look from the outside and you can replace as often as the dust requires. I would never go back to using regular blinds after using Redi Shades. In addition, the price is very reasonable.

Try them, you will not be disappointed.

If you are wanting to truly darken your room, take a white garbage bag and tape it across your window (so it looks okay from the outside). Cover with Expensive Dark Green Garbage bags (they are darker than cheap) (hang long across, use tape if in apartment or use tacks if in your own place to secure them. Then so your room looks nice, hang your room darkening Redi Shade.

You room will be really dark. My husband said our bedroom is like a cave. LOL.

I love them!

I have used this in my daughter’s room and in my living room for the past two summers and it makes a huge difference on the power bill.

The late afternoon sun & 20′ ceilings in my living room make it more like an oven than a living area. I put these shades underneath the mini blnds for 1/2 of the windows in the room. Before I used these my AC couldn’t keep up to keep the house at 73 degrees. It would always get up to 77 or 78. With these on though, it is so cool & comfortable.

What’s even greater is that I can take them down once summer is over and put them back up the following year.

They are very EASY to install - less than 10 minutes.

***I highly recommend that you clean the area that the adhesive strip will stick to with alcohol before you hang these. A clean area helps the adhesiveness last longer.

Review date : 2008-05-18
These are inexpensive, easy to install, and they reduce the heat in my living room when used with my darker damask curtains which cooked the room when used alone. These don’t block the sunlight, they just reduce the light entering; they also are not high quality permanent-type blinds, I just use them in the summer to reduce interior heat.
I ordered 2 and Amazon sent each of them in its own 3 1/2′x2′x2′ box, the dimension of the blind is about 3′x2"x2". Lots of wasted space and packing material.

Review date : 2008-05-14
Easy to trim down to size. Easy to use and look great. I’m thinking of buying more but the HUGE BOX each shade comes in is ridiculous. THey should ship them together in one box.

Introduction to Gazebos

May 26, 2009 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

The Gazebo is a pavilion structure that has been used for many years as a spacious public space, for bands to play or people to meet. Many movies show effectuated couples dancing in a gazebo, and a lot of people remember that gazebo scene in “the sound of music”.

Today many people choose to place a gazebo in their garden or backyard, some prepare a special gazebo for marriage and others a SPA gazebo for the better things in life, a gazebo is slowly turning into an standard house upgrade feature.

Gazebos were originally designed to provide shade and basic shelter, but today the gazebo is turning into something much more than the regular gazebo park we used to see. The earlier versions of the gazebo were more solid than they are today, and most of the gazebos were used primarily as pavilions.

A garden gazebo is a nice addition to any garden, you can spend sunny mornings in the gazebo reading the paper or listening to music, it is certainly a new feature for a large garden, arranging the space and using the fauna as decoration. A garden gazebo is one of those thing that you cant imagine never having a day after you got it. No matter what the environment of your garden, there is a garden gazebo out there just waiting to be bought.

When thinking of a garden gazebo you will also need to think of what material to use in constructing it. Wood is the natural choice for most people, since it is natural and placed in the garden it sort of goes with everything around it. There are a few different kind of wood you can use for this purpose, pine, cedar, and redwood. Pine is the softest wood, ages to a rich yellow, and complements surrounding evergreens. Cedar is higher in overall sturdiness, is less prone to rot, and ages to a gray-brown.

A patio gazebo is a gazebo that sits on or is built into your patio and is very easy and affordable to do. The great thing about patio gazebos is that you can design a new patio for it, or even add a gazebo onto your already built patio. There will need to be serious consideration for the materials used, but there is basically no reason not to have a patio gazebo you can spend your evenings at. Placing of a patio gazebo is important, small to mid-size will probably want to use the corner to place the gazebo, this way it will use most of the space efficiently.

Large patios give you more flexibility, and you can choose any placing you want, providing you got enough room for the gazebo.

You can even place a patio gazebo on top of the patio, this will call for careful examination of the material is use but this is very possible. The strongest gazebos are made of metal. Whatever the gazebo is made of chances are that only the strongest and most particular of hurricanes will disturb it.

A hot tub gazebo is truly an upgrade, not only to a garden or backyard but to your life, imagine a warm soak in freezing January, a nice glass of wine this is the life. Many spa gazebo manufacturers make the gazebo also as a protection from the elements, so you could also use this as a protected outdoor room. When you choose to add a spa environment to your back yard or deck, you want to make the experience the most private and comforting possible.

With hot tub gazebos, you can surround your Jacuzzi with either a redwood type arbor or even add screens to keep flying insects away from your spa experience. You can find hot tub gazebos that come both pre-built, ready to assemble, or find plans for a gazebo if you have carpentry experience. A hot tub gazebo can be turned into the center of attention at its location, you can add many features around it to make the soaking experience better, lights, music and much more can be added to the hot tub environment to fully enjoy this great spa gazebo.

Whatever gazebo you choose, enjoy it to the fullest. A gazebo can arrive as a do it yourself kit, and you can make building it a family activity, these kits sometime come with an instructional video you can all watch together. There is almost always an option of calling experts and have them setup the gazebo for you.

Daniel Roshard is a interior designer fascinated by gazebos and garden architecture, he is currently studying garden design and integration of gazebos to public parks and gardens.Daniel is writing reviews and tips about gazebos for http://gazebo.zupatips.com/
