How To Bring Your Living Room To Life

October 28, 2008 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Do you like what you have but dont like your room? Heres the solution: pull your rooms together so they look finished and professionally decorated by following these techniques to add the wow to your rooms! (Ive used them in hundreds of homes!).

1. Paint the walls and ceiling a rich, warm neutral color or one of the colors in your rooms fabrics. Your furnishings will immediately look more at home. I call it marrying your architecture to your furnishings.

2. Next, move your seating away from the walls and group it around a fireplace, a view window or any logical focal point.

3. Now, add a generous area rug to accent and unify your entire seating area.

4. Fill any empty looking corners with large plants and soft up-lights. Add a decorative, folding screen for a fuller look.

5. Place your lamps to evenly and softly light your seating area. Use additional lighting to accent your artwork, collections and accessories.

6. Create a focal point on the coffee table by elevating one of your favorite accessories on a stack of several books (sans covers). This will give your treasure more presence. Then add a low, full green plant or a blooming orchid and a couple of large, glowing candles. If you like a fuller look, use a decorative tray or runner underneath.

7. Lastly, be sure to decorate the top half of your room (from the furniture up), with tall plants, window treatments, artwork and that wall color. The room will feel considerably larger, more interesting and most importantly finished!

These few changes will make all the difference so you can start enjoying living in a beautiful home!

I got these after ordering the duvet, shams and bedskirt for my son’s room. I was concerned, no thread count listed, and the price, well, I kinda was expecting like maybe 200t/c or so. But not so, these sheets were silky right out of the package, nice deep pockets that accomadate a rather thick mattress and a 4" foam topper. The pillowcases have a neat trick too, an extra flap that keeps the pillow inside the case. The top sheet is roomy and the color is perfectly matched with the indigo duvet and accessories.
these sheets are a lot pricier now though–more than twice what i paid for the first set, so i guess i can say they were a great buy, but i don’t think i’m going to go for a second set at current prices.

Nowhere in the description did I read a thread count, but the price was amazing so I ordered anyway. I love these sheets. I also got the duvet and shams. It looks exactly like the picture and feels silky smooth, but is cotton so they feel cool and wonderful. The pillowcases have an extra flap like a sham to hide the edge of the pillow. I love these sheets. I will order more I think.

We have a pillow top mattress and no normal queen size sheets would fit so i ordered this great set in king size and it fits perfect. It looks great and the price i paid for it is awesome.

Review date : 2008-07-15
I was a little hesistant to buy this set cuz I had a very thick mattresses and really needed a deep fitted sheet. I’m happy to say this set is fantastic. Love the black too!

Review date : 2008-07-14
This was a quick purchase for me so I would have a set of sheets to fit my california king when it arrived earlier than expected, as I had no time to do my normal research. I figured they would be throw aways because of the price, but as it turned out they are prefectly servicable sheets. Excellent buy for the price!

Home Decorating with Asian Decor and Asian Furniture

October 28, 2008 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

One of the recent trends in home decorating is the influence of the Far East. With its simplicity and attention to space, this lends itself well to our hectic Western lifestyle. A lot of the elements of Asian home decorating can be trace back to two schools of thought, one originating from China and the other from Japan.

Feng Shui is a Chinese concept of space and object placement. Feng Shui associates the home with both health and prosperity. There are various rooms in which Feng Shui is more prevalent. The kitchen is one of them. Couple this perspective with the role of the kitchen as “the heart of the home,” and you can see that any feng shui in this room can have a significant impact on your family. A few things you can try are to place Buddha statues at strategic places. Buddha statues are known to add vibrant chi power to your home. Especially the Laughing Buddha statue. Buddha statues can be made from various stones. Jade as well as bronze are the most popular choices. Quan Yin is the female version of Buddha.

Common Feng Shui gifts include Chinese dragons. These dragons are said not only to provide powerful chi energy, but also keep evil spirits from entering your home. For better wealth, riches and prosperity, one can turn to Chinese Feng Shui money frogs. These frogs are made from either jade or agate. They symbolize fortune and good luck with your hard work and clever mind. If you’re looking for a healthier frame of body and mind, an Asian Feng Shui crystal globe might be your answer. This is one of the most commonly used cures and produces amazing results. When sunlight hits these crystals, beams of colored light radiate in all directions activating chi energy, and can also be used to slow down chi. Incidentally, various Asian animal figures such as jade horses can also be used to the same effect.

The Japanese perspective of home decorating and home furnishings is quite different. Rather than concentrate on objects to attract or repel energies, the Japanese focuses on spatial matters. It uses room dividers known as Shoji screens to separate form and function within a living space. A single Shoji screen can transform a dull square room into practical, attractive living areas. These oriental screens are often made with rice paper and can have vibrant colors or symbols. Some common designs are bamboo tree shoji screen, cherry blossom shoji screen or Geisha shoji screen. Light also plays a vital role in Japanese home design. Japanese lanterns are known for their boxy shape which reflects strength and substance. The thin rice paper allows ample light to shine through while displaying the intended images, much like the way silk paintings are. In fact, Japanese lanterns are sometime made from silk.

The Oriental Vs. Contemporary Bedroom Design Theory

October 27, 2008 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Dear friends,

If you have read any interior design books/articles, visited
a few websites on the internet, you will find the word theme used
quite often.

What exactly is a theme-based design?

A theme according to me is a collection of various parameters of
design of an interior space. So a theme may include a certain set
colors, materials, repetition of a certain element, such as
a decorative item, etc…

Primarily there are two basic themes under which a design can
be categorized, 1)Oriental 2)Contemporary.

Oriental Bedroom Design Theme:

These kind of themes have a still drilled down niche design
themes, such as country, rustic, vintage, elegant, etc…
One of the major thing about these kind of themes is that much
emphasis is given on the natural beauty of any material.
These designs are close to nature or are shown to be close to
nature.

These kind of design styles are very rarely found in the urban
city interiors. Mostly the countryside homes adopt these kind if
themes, to replicate the flora and fauna of the outside environment.

The designer tries to include the patters seen in nature, such as
leaves, flowers, plants. All these natural patterns are seen on
wallpaper patterns, decorative lamps, curtains, furniture
upholstery, wall paintings, etc…

Homes which are build on country side such as farm houses, the scarcity
of space is not an issue, but this creates another problem as far as
designing interiors is concerned.

A bedroom, no matter of what size it is, requires some basic
furniture elements as functional needs, such as a double bed,
dressing table, wardrobes, study tables, a book shelf etc..

It is sometimes possible that because of the large spaces, the
bedroom looks empty after the furniture is arranged. At such
times “decoration” plays a major role. During ancient years
the palaces and castles had such large built spaces, where
extensive use of decoration was used in the form of paintings,
heavy decorative flooring patterns, carvings, moldings as a
decorative architectural elements.

So in this oriental design trend, decoration of the space using
various accessories plays a major role.

Contemporary design Theme:

These kind of design themes are very new as compared to the
previously mentioned oriental design theme. But how did the
designers came along using these kind of designs?

During the starting years of the 20th century, the “Industrial
Revolution” in Europe changed the face of our planet. It
was easy to design and manufacture goods on a mass scale
with amazing speed and efficiency.

This created a flood of industries in and around the cities.
These cities attracted large amount of people to migrate from
rural areas to city centers in search of a living.

Because of this migratory effect there was a sudden need of
housing requirement for the workers. This is where the concept of
an “apartment” was introduced. Because of the pressure of demand,
a school of thoughts emerged within the architects, who
believed that “simplicity” is the need of today’s era.

They thought that, the design of the building has to be simple
and easy to build, then only we can compete with the growing
demand of housing needs in cities. That’s why simple designs with mostly plane and square faces with square or rectangular openings
were used. These forms and masses were easy to build and still
beautiful. If everything from “safety pins” to “space ships”
could be built on a mass scale, why not “buildings”.

The school of thought believed that a plane rectangular form
is in itself beautiful and they proved this using infinite
permutations and combinations of the basic square form. That’s
why decoration was given a second preference. Today we call this
school of thought as “contemporary”. In contemporary design
every element has an order.

That’s why in today’s modern interior design, simplicity is the
key to an efficient design. Unlike the previous oriental design
theme, the contemporary design theme states that any kind of
architectural decoration is always dependent on the basic form
of the building. The form itself is so beautiful, that the need
to further decorate it is not required. Today’s modern interiors
spaces are simple to understand, simple to construct, and
project a kind of simplicity.

By reading the above paragraphs some of you might say that,
decoration is no more needed. But this is not true. I am not trying
to force some ideas here. But most people confuse the whole
concept of “Interior Design” and “Interior Decoration”. Both
are quite different and both have a unique value in today’s
complex society.

Decoration was something the primitive man learned, looking at
the nature around him. He saw plants, flowers, birds, animals
and tried to copy these elements. We still use “embroidery” on
our dresses. But the modern design theory says that any sort
of decoration can only “enhance” the existing form, but can not
be an element of design.

What does this mean?

In the above said example the “embroidery” pattern can certainly
add to the beauty of the cloth, but the modern theory denies to
accept the cloth to be of a cheap quality. It states that every form, texture, material, shape is in itself beautiful and must be
accepted as it is. Because of this the need to further decorate it
does not arise.

Thus decoration whether used in architecture or elsewhere is always
dependant on the form on which it is used, but design is
an independent entity which does not need any justification from the
external factors.

The two design themes mentioned above are still widely used today.
The user must look upon them from a point of view of what best suits
his/her likes and dislikes. Only then can you give yourself and
your family the best quality of living.

I hope this article was informative to everyone.

Product Description

1500 Watts / LCD Digital Temperature Display / Stainless Steel Sole Plate / Variable Steam Control / Soft Grip Handle / Auto Clean

Customer Reviews

Review date : 2008-07-27
I purchased the B & D D2030 expecting little, but receiving a lot. The steam feature on this iron is so good, it is a joy to use. No more pushing the button for steam and getting a "poof." This iron really gives you what you want, at all settings. Great digital readings, you can use it vertically, just steaming instead of iron and the best part is, all this for less than $50!

Review date : 2008-07-24
I finally replaced the cheap-o iron I’d had for 15 years, and boy, was it time. I picked this iron because of the good reviews, and I was not disappointed. The D2030 heats up in record time, the settings are easy to use and the spray of steam is great when you need a little extra oomph. The water receptacle is nice-sized so you don’t have to fill up mid-ironing. There is no leaking or spitting of the water during ironing like I’d had in my old iron, either. The iron has just enough heft without being too heavy, and the sole plate is larger than average, which means you cover more surface area in a shorter amount of time. I heartily recommend it. It’s a great product and a great value. Why spend more?

Review date : 2008-07-24
I put off buying a good iron for a long time because I’d purchased irons for thriftiness and suffered the consequences. I was ready to spend a little more and get a better product but I wanted to look at consumer reviews before I ordered. I’m glad I did. It’s a very good iron. The shot of steam is powerful and it’s a reasonable weight for the desired outcome I expect. I definitely recommend the product.

Review date : 2008-07-23
My Black & Decker Digital iron works really well. Initially, the auto-cleaning function was a bit confusing, but I figured it out. It feels more substantial and powerful than any iron I’ve had before.

Review date : 2008-07-23
Best iron we have owned. Heats up quickly. Maintains temperature. Good steam delivery. Very reliable.

Floors To Suit Your Lifestyle and Budget - Part 1

October 26, 2008 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

There are many things to consider when choosing a floor. You will want to consider appearance, cost, and installation techniques.

Laminate is multi-layered. The top layer is urethane, next is a layer of photographed material that looks like wood or stone, the bottom is panel core. Laminate is laid over thin foam sheeting and can be installed over any flat, smooth surface including cement. Originally the floor planks were glued together but the most popular and cleaner and easier method used today is a snap together design. Laminate is easy to clean and a good quality material will stand up to a lot of abuse. It is a very good choice if you have pets. You must be careful that large liquid spills are cleaned up immediately because liquid can seep under the flooring causing it to buckle.

Bamboo is a plant but has many of the same characteristics as wood. It can be glued down, nailed down and as a floating floor with a core backing. It is strong but has more markings than wood that is quite different in appearance. Bamboo is fast growing and easily replaced so is available to use quicker than wood.

Flexible Flooring is thin material that is glued to the sub floor. These floors can also be glued to a plank or tile sized panel and installed like a floating floor. Varieties of this material are:

Vinyl Tile is relatively soft underfoot. High priced vinyl is durable, colorfast, attractive and much cheaper than other flooring materials. Avoid using rubber- backed rugs or mats as the backing can stain vinyl. Go on the internet or library and study methods of installing flooring. You may not be installing it yourself but you will know enough to question the installer if his method of installing doesn’t follow what you learned. We had vinyl sheeting installed in our kitchen and the installer said it only had to be glued on the outer edges. Now 5 years after installation, the glue is no longer holding the flooring and it is pulling away from the wall and seams. The store went out of business.

Linoleum has made a comeback. The color goes through the entire sheet. It’s quiet, hypoallergenic, and soft underfoot. It is more expensive than vinyl and an expert is needed to install it.

In the next installment, I’ll explain about some other popular flooring products.

Barbara Smith has a passion for writing informative articles. Her recent work inspired a site on Laminate Flooring and Bamboo Flooring.
