Do you like what you have but dont like your room? Heres the solution: pull your rooms together so they look finished and professionally decorated by following these techniques to add the wow to your rooms! (Ive used them in hundreds of homes!).

1. Paint the walls and ceiling a rich, warm neutral color or one of the colors in your rooms fabrics. Your furnishings will immediately look more at home. I call it marrying your architecture to your furnishings.

2. Next, move your seating away from the walls and group it around a fireplace, a view window or any logical focal point.

3. Now, add a generous area rug to accent and unify your entire seating area.

4. Fill any empty looking corners with large plants and soft up-lights. Add a decorative, folding screen for a fuller look.

5. Place your lamps to evenly and softly light your seating area. Use additional lighting to accent your artwork, collections and accessories.

6. Create a focal point on the coffee table by elevating one of your favorite accessories on a stack of several books (sans covers). This will give your treasure more presence. Then add a low, full green plant or a blooming orchid and a couple of large, glowing candles. If you like a fuller look, use a decorative tray or runner underneath.

7. Lastly, be sure to decorate the top half of your room (from the furniture up), with tall plants, window treatments, artwork and that wall color. The room will feel considerably larger, more interesting and most importantly finished!

You can’t really beat a queen sized comforter for 40 bucks. The only issue I have- the feathers poke out a little more than normal, but with a soft duvet cover you’re golden.
Bought it for my toddler and am extremely satisfied with the purchase. I don’t expect it to last too long, but for now it certainly does the trick.

I was not to picky about the comforter I picked, so I got this one. I just wanted another blanket on my bed. I got this one and was very happy with it… UNTIL I washed it. It smells like something died in my dryer. I cannot get the smell out of the blanket. It did not smell till I washed it. I have been airing it out for 4 days now, and it still smells like something dead!! YUCK!!!

I bought this for my oversized king mattress. I was having a very hard time finding an oversized down comforter to cover my 15" mattress for an affordable price. The cover on the down is not very soft; luckily I have an incredibly soft duvet. So I wouldn’t recommend using this comforter without a duvet cover. It did fit in the king Biltmore duvet I bought from Amazon perfectly. So I don’t totally regret buying it.. But I’d prefer something nicer. Down comforters are not suppose to sound/feel crunchy. There is definitely quill feathers in it.. a lot.. and there shouldn’t be. I bought a Cal-King size 108×98 and my duvet is 110×98. the fullness of the comforter is just right, it does fluff up well.

I ordered this comforter because it was cheap and seemed to have good reviews. Also, the title describes it as a "goose down" comforter. This is misleading, as the comforter only contains 5% goose down and 95% other types of feather. It’s still a warm blanket, but the feathers often poke through, and they can be kind of sharp. Sharpness is perhaps not the best quality in a comforter.

I give this product 2 stars. I would have given it one star, but after I bought it, I saw that the product details do list this item as only being 5% goose down. I just want to prevent others from being misled like I was.

This comforter is heavy and warm, which was what I wanted, but little feathers do poke through the fabric, which is really irritating, plus it means the stuffing is leaking out. I had to buy a duvet cover (which was more expensive than the comforter!) for it to solve the problem; I should have just bought a higher quality comforter in the first place. Also, wrestling a heavy king-size comforter into a duvet cover is a 2-person job.

Butterflies In The Bedroom

October 31, 2008 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Kids and nature.

Kids seem to love most things that nature throws at them. And that includes little bugs running around the house and flying in the windows. When I was a kid I loved nature. And butterflies were part of that love. Along with my sisters and brother we caught caterpillars. Put them in a box to watch them hatch into butterflies. Our favorites were the Monarch butterflies as they were the most beautiful.

Back in those days, when I was a kid, we had to actually go out and look for caterpillars and butterflies, the pet shops never stocked them. Now the modern generation have it so easy, they can buy them on the internet and the postman delivers them.

None of this walking around the park looking for the trees the butterflies like so you can get the caterpillars. Also we had our butterflies in a shoebox with a few holes in the lid and sides to give them some air. Now you can buy a readymade butterfly enclosure like a big butterfly net that keeps your butterflies safe and sound.

The internet has changed life as we know it. But kids are still the same, they are still fascinated by what nature can do. And nothing is more fascinating that watching a caterpillar turn into a butterfly.

On the market there are two main butterfly habitats, both made by the same company “Insect Lore.”

The best habitat and also the most expensive is the “Butterfly Pavilion.” Here you order10 caterpillars and the company guarantees six to be perfect specimens. Most customers got all 10 alive through the post therefore ending up with 10 butterflies.

The pavilion is around 2 foot high so it is quite large and you can either hang it up or put it on a table or the floor. It is made from quite heavy see through cloth mesh. It is actually an amazingly simple design, wire support in a cylinder shape so it can either hang up or stand up, and it is complete with zippered entry so you can get in and out.

You also receive a very informative booklet that contains lots of butterfly facts. As well as instructions on how to put it all together and how to keep your caterpillars and butterflies alive.

First you buy the butterfly pavilion then you have to order the caterpillars. The caterpillars are pretty hardy so most survive the trip by US mail. They come in two cups complete with food.

Read the instructions before opening these cups. The caterpillars are supposed to stay in the cups so they can turn into chrysalides by hanging from the top of the cup.

Everything is supplied but you have to supply your own sugar water, which somehow manages to drip all over the place and cause a mess. But people being people they love to add food so most drop in apple slices or run around outside looking for leaves to feed the caterpillars which grow amazing fast.

After you receive the caterpillars they take about a week to grow big enough to pupate into chrysalis. Then the waiting game starts again while you wait for the butterflies to hatch. That takes about a week to 10 days.

You now have a pavilion full of butterflies. The instructions recommend you let them go free as long as the weather is over 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Because of this weather thing some people have kept their butterflies and have ended up with 2 or 3 generations in the one pavilion. So you can keep using the pavilion but you have to find your own food.

It is amazing what people can dream up nowadays. In my day were messing around with shoeboxes and it never occurred to anybody to make up a little butterfly cage like what you can buy nowadays. Nature has come a long way since I was a kid.

Insect Lore also bring out a smaller version called the Butterfly Garden which is about half the size of the Pavilion and comes with only six caterpillars. Everything else is basically the same right down to the instruction manual.

Nature will always fascinate children so it is these little educational toys that can make a difference in how we bring up our children and how much they will learn. As the cities have gotten bigger nature usually comes to us on the TV but these new generation nature toys are a welcome addition to our homes.

Product is excellent for temporary room darkening (or even more permanent if you are careful about installing and perhaps enhancing with minimal window treatment.) However, please be warned about the packaging. Each of 5 shades came in its own box that was HUGE and loaded with paper. Completely unnecessary as all five could have fit in ONE box 1/3 of the size. It took me 45 minutes to unpack and get rid of all the packaging so I could leave the house (the five boxes completely blocked my entryway.) I was LIVID and will NEVER order these from Amazon again. I do want more and will go through another retailer. This is obviously the work of a disgruntled or zero-IQ employee that is trying to ruin Amazon’s otherwise great track record. I had read another review mentioning this, but trust me NOTHing can prepare you for the insanity of this packaging. And, to make matters worse, one of the shades was bent! Completely ridiculous. Bottom line: buy these, but NOT FROM AMAZON

I have allergies and have used Redi Shades for over 4 years, have used the cordless and the ones with the cord. I like the cordless best. The are easy to cut and easy to hang.

On windows that get usage and because I live in the south, (Hot here) sometimes the tape at the top of the blinds gradually come loose, so I just take a small piece of duct tape and place on center and corners when I first put up, then it doesn’t make any difference how hot it gets, it won’t come loose.

They are wonderful temporary shades, gives your room a nice look from the outside and you can replace as often as the dust requires. I would never go back to using regular blinds after using Redi Shades. In addition, the price is very reasonable.

Try them, you will not be disappointed.

If you are wanting to truly darken your room, take a white garbage bag and tape it across your window (so it looks okay from the outside). Cover with Expensive Dark Green Garbage bags (they are darker than cheap) (hang long across, use tape if in apartment or use tacks if in your own place to secure them. Then so your room looks nice, hang your room darkening Redi Shade.

You room will be really dark. My husband said our bedroom is like a cave. LOL.

I love them!

I have used this in my daughter’s room and in my living room for the past two summers and it makes a huge difference on the power bill.

The late afternoon sun & 20′ ceilings in my living room make it more like an oven than a living area. I put these shades underneath the mini blnds for 1/2 of the windows in the room. Before I used these my AC couldn’t keep up to keep the house at 73 degrees. It would always get up to 77 or 78. With these on though, it is so cool & comfortable.

What’s even greater is that I can take them down once summer is over and put them back up the following year.

They are very EASY to install - less than 10 minutes.

***I highly recommend that you clean the area that the adhesive strip will stick to with alcohol before you hang these. A clean area helps the adhesiveness last longer.

Review date : 2008-05-18
These are inexpensive, easy to install, and they reduce the heat in my living room when used with my darker damask curtains which cooked the room when used alone. These don’t block the sunlight, they just reduce the light entering; they also are not high quality permanent-type blinds, I just use them in the summer to reduce interior heat.
I ordered 2 and Amazon sent each of them in its own 3 1/2′x2′x2′ box, the dimension of the blind is about 3′x2"x2". Lots of wasted space and packing material.

Review date : 2008-05-14
Easy to trim down to size. Easy to use and look great. I’m thinking of buying more but the HUGE BOX each shade comes in is ridiculous. THey should ship them together in one box.

Have Fun While Thinking of Your Basement Remodeling Plan!

October 30, 2008 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Have you done repainting and rearranging your room? Have you redesigned your bathroom? Have you reconstructed your kitchen and pantry? Have you remodeled your living and dining room? Well then, your house definitely looks new and beautiful, yet it still seems lacking, don’t you think? That’s because, there is something else you’ve forgotten to renovate, the room that people most often forget to clean and visit—the basement.

Basement remodeling is definitely one of the activities that must not be forgotten when doing or planning house renovations. The basement is one of the most important rooms that must be reinvented to suit your taste, lifestyle, and needs. Most people mistake the basement as a place for storage, dumping ground for rejected house items, or just an extra room for laundry, junk, pipes, dirt, etc. This shouldn’t be the case as this room gives the homeowners an additional or extra space to utilize and maximize, it just depends on who are using or living in the house.

Basement remodeling is a good investment for the homeowners as this gives an added value to the house—once it’s thoroughly cleaned, properly utilized, and maximized potentially; people or guests may even consider this as a good room for relaxing, partying, entertaining, etc. There have been many successful basement remodeling projects done over the years, and because of these, there are more happier homeowners to date.

Remodeling a basement may entail more details and careful planning than the rest of the room renovations, it’s because one has to consider several factors first before you go on with the planning. Some of these important aspects that must be dealt and answered with first are: waterproofing - as most basements have pipes form the upstairs or main rooms, mildew and molds are definitely something to look into, and leaks and tubes must be taken care of; lighting - as this is a room where natural light cannot always penetrate, thus good lamps or lights must be used; materials - since this is not a typical room where ventilation or heat circulates, then one has to check on good ceiling, flooring, and walling materials; furniture and fixture - as most basements have low ceilings, one must consider on the most appropriate items and things that must be placed in this room; and there are still other factors to be looked into, depending on the kind of basement you have.

Once you’ve covered all the important and relevant factors in your basement, you may now start visualizing and creating your ideal basement remodeling plan. It’s actually simple, you just have to think of your needs and activities, then you can work from that thought to the next. You can have your own gym, library, office, entertainment set, pool hall, party bar, etc. in your basement.

When one’s creativity will just work its magic, then there’s no worry why you can’t start working on this project. At first, when you go down your basement, you may find it disappointing, because it looks like it’s so much work, but once you actually start doing it, it simply comes easy and naturally.

In basement remodeling, you just have to know what you want, where to start, and then do it. In no time, you’ll be the envy of your friends.

Review date : 2008-07-15
The storage ottoman came yesterday and so far I am very pleased! The package was a little torn and worn out by the time it got to me, but the product was not damaged. There is a smell, but it’s just the leather-like material. We’re letting ours air out and the smell is already beginning to fade. The storage is great for our puzzles and games, with room to spare. We are looking forward to using all three ottomans for extra seating. The trays definitely come in handy for holding drinks and snacks. Overall, very pleased and would recommend this to anyone.

Review date : 2008-07-11
This set was a steal for $99 in the Goldbox, especially considering it’s real leather. I really like it, but phew! What a stink! When this thing arrived, it came with its own pungent cloud of ammonia-stench. I’m guessing that’s what was used to tan the leather, but it took forever for the smell to dissipate, and the inside still smells strongly almost 4 months later. Caveat emptor.

Review date : 2008-07-06
This is awesome, goes well with my living room and is very practical. Got a good deal through the deal of the day from Amazon. Highly recommended.

Review date : 2008-05-11
Great storage with the additional two ottomans, uses are multiple, coffee table, foot stool, additional seating

Review date : 2008-05-05
This is a great product. It smells a little funny at first so let it air out, but boy is it useful. We use it in the TV room so we always have extra seating and someone is always eating(teenagers), so the trays are great. Believe it or not, it has helped corral the mess.

Tomatoes History, Origin, Facts… or Fiction

October 29, 2008 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

A tomato importer, John Nix, decided to challenge the law after scrutinizing the Tariff Act. His case relied on the fact that tomatoes were a fruit and not vegetable, therefore, it should not be subjected to the Tariff Act. Nix’s objections brought the case to the Supreme Court in 1893. Although Nix had a solid case, the Supreme Court rejected the botanical facts and continued to refer to tomatoes as a vegetable.

Plant family
Tomatoes belong to the genus Lycopersicon, while potatoes belong to the genus Solanum; Both of which belongs to the same “flowering plant family” solanaceae. The similarities in leaves and flowers justifies this taxonomic grouping.

The UK - Introduction of the tomato
When the tomato plant was first introduced into the UK, some areas were not willing to consume the fruit because they were considered poisonous. Other plants that were poisonous, and in the same family as the tomato, such as the henbane, mandrake and the deadly nightshade were reasons to be concerned.

The deadly nightshade (Atropus belladonna), in particular, resembled the tomato plant the most, and was used as a hallucinogenic drug, as well as for cosmetic purposes in various parts of Europe. In Latin, the name “belladonna”; literally means “beautiful woman.” The women in medieval courts would apply drop of deadly nightshade extract to their eyes, dilating their pupils, a fashionable statement at the time.

When the deadly nightshade was taken for it’s hallucinogenic properties, the consumer would experience visuals and a feeling of flying or weightlessness. German folklore suggests it was also used in witchcraft to evoke werewolves, a practice know as lycanthropy. The common name for tomatoes in Germany translates to “Wolf peach,” which was simply another reason for Europeans to avoid the plant.

North America - Introduction of the tomato
Tomato plants were transported by colonists from Britain to North America. The plants were most valued for removing pustule (Pimples, Blisters - Pus filled, inflamed skin). The inventor of peanut butter, George Washington Carver, strongly urged his poor Alabama neighbors to consume tomatoes because of their unhealthy diet. However, he had little success convincing them that the plants was edible.

Early efforts by merchants to sell tomatoes were not very successful. It is said that the fruit was brought to the liberal hamlet of Salem, Mass. in 1802 by a painter who also found it difficult persuading people to try the fruit. New Orleans cuisine was reported to have used tomatoes by 1812, however, doubts about the fruit lingered in some areas.

It’s thought that doubts about the plant’s edibility was laid to rest, when Colonel Robert Gibbon Johnson announced that he will consume a bushel of tomatoes in front of the Boston courthouse at noon on September 26, 1820. Thousands of spectators turned out to watch the man commit suicide (At least, so they thought) by consuming the poisonous fruit. It is said that spectators were shocked when they realized the Colonel will survive after consuming numerous tomatoes. This story is from an old farm journal and may not be very reliable, however, it’s quite entertaining.

Tomato popularity on the rise
Throughout the western world, tomatoes began to grow in popularity. In the 1820s, several cookbooks included recipes which required or called for tomatoes. Tomatoes were sold by the dozens in Boston’s Quincy Market in 1835. In Thomas Bridgeman seed catalogue, 4 varieties of tomatoes were listed: Cherry, Pear, Large Yellow and Large Squash.

Bruist, a seed merchant commented on the tomato in 1858 - “In taking retrospect of the last eighteen years, there is no vegetable on the catalogue that has obtained such popularity in so short a period as the one now under consideration. In 1828-29, it was almost detested; in ten years almost every variety of pill and panacea was extract of tomato. It now occupies as great a surface of ground as cabbage, and is cultivated the length and breadth of the country.” - www.heirloomseeds.com

That year, Bruits had eight cultivatars listed in his catalogue. A few years later, in 1863, a popular seed catalogue had 23 cultivars listed. One of the listed cultivars was Trophy, the first modern-looking, large, red, smooth-skinned variety which was sold for $5.00 for a packet of 20 seeds.

Large scale breeding for desirable traits became common in the 1870s in both the US and UK. In fact, by the 1880s several hundred cultivars had been named and it was clear that tomato had grown on the western culture. According to a study conducted at Michigan Agricultural College in the late 1880s, 171 of the named cultivars represented only 61 truly unique varieties, many of which were only marginally different.

Heirloom varieties
Although Central American is thought to be the center of domestication, throughout Europe and later in North America, further domestication occurred on a more intense level. Eastern Europe appeared to produce large numbers of high quality varieties. Tomatoes are self-pollinating plants which tend to become genetically homozygous after many generations. Tomatoes will rarely cross breed and usually produce plants will similar characteristics as the parents.

Because of tomatoes natural breeding process, early cultivars did not change much and were kept in a family or community for a long time, hence the name heirlooms. There are cultivars that dates back to over one hundred years that are still produced today. Most heirloom varieties are different in color, size and shape. Some varieties are black, red with black shoulders, dark purple, rainbow and green. In terms of size, some are the size of a cherry to larger varieties weighing over 2 lb.

Heirlooms - a story
Some heirloom varieties have interesting histories as well; at least I think so. Lets talk about the story of a heirloom name Mortgage Lifter. A radiator repair shop owner, Charlie, experienced hard times, as did much of the nation through the Great Depression. Because of financial reasons, most people abandoned their cars and Ol Charlie’s business too a hard hit. He decided to use his four largest fruit producing tomato plants to cross breed repeatedly with each other to create a plant that produced two pounds of fruits.

Claming that his plants could feed a family of six, Charlie peddled the crops for a dollar per plant. Within four years, Charlie generated enough money to pay off the $4,000 dollars mortgage on his home, which led to the heirloom name “Mortgage Lifter.”

Heirlooms - names & origins
In general, the names of heirloom varieties links directly to their history. For example, the Baptiste family in Remis, Fance cultivated the First Pick variety. Picardy’s history also dates back to France (1890). Besser arrived from the Freiburg section of Germany, while Schellenburg’s Favorite came from the Schellenburg family near Manheim, Germany.

Elbe was cultivated in 1889 near the Elbe River in Germany. Since the 1870s, the Amish in Pennsylvania cultivated the Amish Paste variety.
