Creative Ways to Decorate Your Walls

May 21, 2008 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Moving into a new house can sometimes cause a quandry. You can stand and stare at large… blank spaces for weeks wondering just what to do with them. These blank spaces are the walls of your new house or apartment.

Most people have a hard time figuring out what to do with their walls, because their thoughts are limited to just paint and pictures. There’s actually quite a bit more you can do to decorate your walls though, and here are a few of my favorite tips:

1. Create shadow boxes. These are especially nice to do as remembrances of loved ones who are no longer with us. If you want to create a shadow box for grandparents for instance, but you don’t have anything handed down from them that could easily be used in this decoration, try visiting around to yard sales and flea markets. Find items that fit the timeframe of your grandparent’s lives, or that remind you of them fondly. Use these items in your shadow boxes, then display them in a nice area of your home to symbolize both the love you had for them, and the legacy they left behind.

2. If you love blankets or quilts, there are some very unique ways to decorate your walls with these. Simply attach pieces of wood to your wall, drill holes in them, and put dowel rods in the holes. On these rods you can hang your quilts or blankets just like you can on a regular quilt rack, except this way they decorate your walls. Placing the items just above a sofa is a great way to keep blankets nearby when you watch movies or snuggle up next to the fire. Also, if you enjoy quilting or sewing, you may want to use a similar structure on the wall to hold bolts of fabric for your creations. The walls look lovely, and you’re also organizing your home!

3. Here are just a few other ideas: You can use old windows and some curtains to make a faux window in a room without enough windows. Your can use old picture frames to “frame” an oil painting or collage or quotations. Using small vases, you can have fresh flowers hanging on your wall. You could also make part of your wall into corkboard or a set of box frames so that you can display your children’s artwork.

So there you have multiple, easy, and inexpensive ways to uniquely decorate your walls!

How To Start Your Garden From Seeds The Right Way

May 20, 2008 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Green house gardeners are typically of two minds when it involves planting. One group of gardeners prefers to use seedlings to start their gardens, while another group would rather feel the sense of accomplishment from planting seeds. It all depends on what you personally prefer.

Sometimes transplanting seedlings can introduce problems such as disease or insect infestation to an existing garden. That is why planting from seed is a good alternative for green house gardens.

At first, it may seem difficult to plant from seeds. It really isn’t as long as you read and follow the directions carefully on the packet. And when the seedlings start to grow, it is important to protect them.

A good growing tray is a great accessory to have in your green house or garden and it is ideal for your plant seeds. Be sure to pick the best growing tray you can find. Your local garden nursery or center can recommend the best type to use.

Now that you have a good tray and seeds, you’re ready to fill it with a high quality seed mixture. Although it may be tempting to use regular potting soil, don’t. A “seed starting mix” is recommended and has been specially prepared for growing new seeds. (Sterile, no diseases or garden pests, etc.)

The next step is to plant your seeds in the starter mix after the growing trays have been prepared. Remember, seeds should be planted at least twice their own depth. If the seeds are very small, it might be a better idea to lightly cover the seeds with the planting mix. They may not sprout if they are buried too deep in the soil.

Don’t forget to label your seed plantings in the tray. You can use a nursery label or a waterproof marker. It is not advisable to use the package the seeds came in since it will quickly get ruined from the moisture.

When watering your baby plants, be sure to use a misting sprayer since a watering can or hose could damage or uncover the seeds. To prevent evaporation of the moisture, your growing tray should be covered. Plus, covering the tray will also promote germination.

Heat is another great source for speeding up the germination process. Studies have shown that heat increases germination and many successful green house gardeners use this technique.

Appliances

May 19, 2008 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

There are two main kinds of appliances in your home. Understanding the differences and functions of both will prevent remodeling complications in the future. Here are some handy tips that will have you identifying and maintaining your appliances like a true professional. These tips will also keep your home a safe and inviting place to be with family and friends.

General Subject Information: In a house there are two broad categories of appliances: (1) kitchen type appliances such as the dishwasher, oven, range, etc. and (2) system appliances such as the furnace, air conditioner, water heater, and gas burning fireplace. Creative Curtains and Window Coverings

May 18, 2008 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

One of the easiest and least expensive ways to transform the look of a room is to change the curtains and window coverings. Instead of using the same old curtain rod and drapes, try putting your imagination to work to see what you can come up after being inspired by the following ideas for curtains and window coverings.

One of the most popular ways of making your own window coverings is to buy a designer curtain rod and pinch clips. These pinch clips grip the edge of the fabric and allow you to hang any kind of material, hemmed or unhemmed from your window. A popular look is to buy wrought iron gothic style rods and clips and attach hemmed or unhemmed sheers or a swath of plain fabric.

This is a very romantic look that can also be achieved by simply attaching long white sheets, which are much cheaper than fabric from a store. You still get that billowy romantic look without the expense. Whether you use sheers or fabric this look is also very much improved by tying ribbons or ties as pullbacks to enhance the appearance of the window coverings.

You can also buy curtains and window coverings that don’t require any type of clip that slides along the rod. These curtains, which come in a variety of designs and fabrics, simply boast loops at their edge that allows you to thread the curtain through the rod. It would also be very simple to make your own curtain like this by attaching ribbons or fabric strips with buttons to a length of fabric.

Curtains and window coverings made from specialty papers are also very popular right now. Hand made papers and rice papers make pleasing semi-transparent blinds that compliment many modern decors. These are quite expensive in most stores but it is easier than you think to make your own. All you need to do is find a store that specializes in selling handmade or specialty papers.

Some of these papers are gorgeous and feature details such as glitter, leaves or threads pressed right into mesh of the paper fibers. Once you buy the paper you simply cut it into the right dimensions that will cover your window. You then string the paper on wire and attach the paper with binder clips. Keep in mind that this type of window covering is best for rooms that still need light but need privacy such as a bathroom.

Another way to liven up your d

4 Basic Guidelines for Your Window Treatment

May 17, 2008 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Why is it important to dress up the window ?

There are many reasons. Firstly, you beautify your home environment. It makes your home cosy. Cloth fabrics also serve to act as sound absorber and dampener reducing disturbing echoes if you talk loudly. This also applies if you are watching TVs or playing the stereos in a room with barren walls. Thirdly, it gives you control over the amount of sunlight streaming into the room. If the morning sun is shining brightly, you can always draw the curtain so the glare will not be upon your eyes. The curtain can also serve as the barrier against the hot temperature outside the house. Lastly, with home apartments built nearer to each other, the curtain provide you with a sense of privacy. By drawing your curtain there will be no intrusion or prying eyes into your movement in the house.

Here are some tips when choosing a curtain.

Make sure your fabric you choose does not shrink, otherwise your investment goes down the drain. Alternatively , you may want to pick a longer fabric with a larger hem. In the event the material does shrink you can always re-do the hem length. Also consider how much afternoon sun the room is exposed to. It is advisable not to use silk fabric as they tend to fade in strong sunlight.

You also need to consider what room you are putting on the curtain. The living room is more formal where guest are seated so more grand or formal curtains are suitable. The study room will look good with curtains that make it look business like and masculine. Curtains in a bedroom usually convey intimacy and warmth. Here are examples of bedroom curtains. Lastly, curtains that are bright and colorful do well in children’s bedroom.

It’s best to install a curtain on a large window or sliding door way as a large curtain looks commanding and majestic with large amounts of fabric. Small window look better with window blinds rather than curtain.

Most probably your walls are white and you should pick curtains with colors similar to white which will match the colors of your wall. What you can do if you prefer darker tones is to select a trim that matches the color of the wall. Alternatively, you can pick a fabric that combines both dark and lighter colors.

Building and Remodeling Your Getaway

May 16, 2008 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

The cabin in the country was perfect for me and my hunting forays but was not large enough for my wife. My old cabin was comfortable but was not what my wife had envisioned as her dream house in the woods.

Retirement was still several years away and spending a lot of money on housing that would be vacant 95% of the time was not what I had envisioned. A trip to Shreveport in search of housing brought forth good results. We found a 14 x 28 foot metal building that had nothing but bare walls. The building had one large door in the front plus two front windows. There was a large garage door at one end. Obviously this building was meant to be used for a vehicle storage unit.

We made calls to the builder and asked for changes to be made to the building that was
being built for us. An exact duplicate of the one we had seen on the lot but with our
changes implemented was ordered. We called for the elimination of the garage door and an
added window space for an air conditioner. We asked the builder to install five electrical
outlets with light switches for a ceiling light.

Our wait of two months ended on the day that the builder said that the movers were ready to bring the building out to our acreage. The bull dozier and operator that I had hired to clear the trees for the installation did an inadequate job. On the third trip to our acreage the movers were finally able to gain access to the installation area.

I installed fiber glass insulation in the walls and in the ceiling area. The ceiling was very tall
and required huge amounts of insulation which I installed with a staple gun. I used chicken
wire to hold the insulation up in the ceiling. I added canvas cloth over the wire instead of
another type of ceiling covering. I installed wood paneling in the walls. The floor was covered
with padding and carpet, A partition was selected to wall off a bathroom area. A shower
enclosure was installed along with the proper plumbing. A toilet was added next to this
small area. The light fixture in the ceiling was exchanged for a ceiling fan with attached
lighting. We installed a loft at one end of the building that could be used for storage or
as extra sleeping quarters.

A weighty concrete step was added for stability at the entrance. An air conditioner was
installed into the extra opening in the wall that was cut by the builder. Under the loft we have
added a refrigerator and freezer. Cabinetry has been cut to accommodate the spacing
available in the building. Bedding is located at one end which is surrounded by a couch with
a suitable structure built for the television. The dining area is set off to one side. It includes
a table with matching chairs. The walls have been decorated to suit the tastes of my wife.

Exiting the building we encounter an electrical pole with external outlets located on it.
Wiring from an electrical device built to control bug populations is plugged directly into one
of the outlets.

The remodeled building is located hundreds of yards away from any habitation. It is situated
about fifty yards back off of the main road. This seems to be a perfect solution for a desire
and dream to have a cabin located in an area of total privacy. The plans are now in the works
to add a deck in front with space for a hot tub. My wife has picked a spot for our new stock
tank. A pier will have to be built to accommodate the fishermen that will use it.

Our ideas are endless.

Fast Solutions with Feng Shui

May 15, 2008 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese art used in the home to create balance and harmony. Feng Shui Practitioners have many tricks of the trade used to get rid of negative energy and promote happiness, stability, affluence, tranquility and peace. With the help of this guide, now you, too, can use Feng Shui to enhance your surroundings.

Here are some Feng Shui fast solutions to allow you to experience maximum fulfillment in your current home:

Color. Color can lift you up or bring you down, so pay attention to the colors you choose for your furniture and to decorate your house. Decide on which color best suits your living room, bedrooms, dining room and furniture by figuring out the energy you would like for that particular room or area.

Red: Great for energy and excitement. Works perfectly in a dining room to keep folks awake at the dinner table. Not so good for bedrooms and studies, as its properties can make it hard to relax and unwind.

Orange: Stimulates hunger. Softer, lighter shades work great for living rooms, playrooms, and even bedrooms.

Yellow: Inspires happiness and creativity. Use in any room to add brightness and vitality.

Green: A healing and soothing color. A perfect choice for a living room or any room where you want to enhance the energy of balance.

Blue: A healing and soothing color. A perfect choice for a living room or any room where you want to enhance the energy of balance.

Indigo: Yet another color that heals and soothes. Good for a child’s room to promote healthy sleep habits.

Purple: A highly spiritual color that promotes richness and transformation. Can be too high of a frequency for a large room, so consider using accents of purple as an alternative to painting an entire room.

Light. Light exerts a strong influence over how we feel. Take care to light each room so that you achieve the appropriate calming or energizing effect.

Sunlight: Natural lighting is the very best way to brighten a room.

Good Quality Lighting: Second best to natural lighting. If possible, don’t skimp when it comes to buying lamps, track lighting, or fixtures for your home.

Bright Lighting: Promotes energy and activity (for a playroom, for example).

Low Lighting: Promotes calmness and relaxation (for a bedroom or study, for example).

Dimmers: Can be purchased at a local hardware store. Dimmer switches give you the flexibility to alternate between bright and low lighting in the same room. With a dimmer, bedrooms can be used to play, study, or sleep, your dining room can accommodate a lively brunch or a romantic supper, and the living room can foster animated conversation or some quiet family reading.

Touch. Designers often overlook the power of texture and how it influences the energy of your home and surroundings. Play with accessories and furniture of different materials to achieve surprising results.

Rugs: A shag rug emits a playful energy, while a tightly coiled country rug adds a homey, nurturing touch to a living room. Decide whether you would prefer to tread barefoot upon a soft carpet or a cool shiny wood floor. One draws the energy of comfort, the other professionalism. Choose the materials best suited for the energy you would like each room of your home to radiate.

Pillows: Silk pillows add richness and sensuality. Cotton is good for kids or casual relaxation, and fun, fluffy pillows can be employed for a lighter, playful effect in a living room or playroom.

Furniture: Sleek wood furniture conveys a sturdy and reassuring energy, while soft leather couches and armchairs add a luxurious energy to a living room or study.

Smell. Aromas are an easy and inexpensive solution to help you achieve a harmonious home environment. Play with different scents in each room, changing them occasionally to see how the smells aid in energizing or relaxing you.

Flowers: Flowers can be a terrific addition to any household because of their color and innate positive energy. Easy to forget, however, is how wonderful a room smells when fresh flowers are added.

Candles: Candles look beautiful and have an immediate calming effect on a room. Use different scents for each room, or place various candles with unique smells together in one collection.

Cooking: Cooking provides nourishment and comfort. An added benefit is the wonderful smells of cooking, which contribute to a balanced atmosphere in your home.

Incense or alternatively, Sage: Incense is a fantastic cleansing agent. Use it to erase negative energies, such as after an argument. The scent will permeate all corners of the room, and either relax or invigorate the inhabitants, depending on what type of incense you use.

You! Don’t forget the most important element of your home: you and your family. Even plants and flowers play a vital role in livening up an environment. Pets and children are great for adding movement in each room, which, in turn, keeps the energy of your house circulating. Play with these and other Feng Shui solutions, to maintain balance and perfect harmony in your home.

Gain Extra Seating with Bar Stools

May 14, 2008 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Today’s kitchen can become a complete entertainment center thanks to a sleek kitchen and bar furniture, including a breakfast area with a stylist breakfast bar and bar stools. Many people remodel their kitchens to accommodate a small bar area where they can grab a bite to eat before work or entertain friends with cocktails at a dinner party.

The kitchen has become more than a place to cook due to new technologically advanced appliances and less traditional furniture. Space-saving appliances such as ovens and microwaves combined not only reduce cooking time but save a lot of space too.

With more space, smart homeowners have more space to accommodate an additional seating area to satisfy their entertaining style. It could be another table, a counter with stylish bar stools, or even a couple of lounge chairs.

If you decide to create a little bar area in your kitchen, you need to find the best location for it. Many people disassemble one wall and install a bar counter instead, or leave two pillars and a four-foot riser to be used as a counter. The bar area should not block the traffic in the kitchen. That’s why the best location for it is near the wall, or if that’s not possible, then on an island in the middle of the kitchen.

A bar counter in the middle of the kitchen requires some space around it for comfortable seating and allow the kitchen to function properly. Don’t fall prey for tricky salespeople who may try to sell you a counter with cabinets bigger than your kitchen can accommodate! The access corridor around the bar area should not be less than 3 ft wide.

Luckily, contemporary bar stools require much less space than their traditional counterparts usually seen in restaurants and pubs. Bar stools for home use are much lighter and more artistic in color and style. Since people spend less time at their home bar than behind a table, contemporary bar stools are usually backless or have a very low ergonomically designed back. The most popular ones are swivel, with sturdy legs. Contemporary bar stools can be made of aluminum, fiberglass, or metal.

There are many bar stool options available on the internet. Customers can choose specific heights, colors, wood color and type and seating fabrics for bar stools creating full custom sets. Customers can also choose from free samples of fabrics and other upholstery types, finishes and wood samples. This way, you can have a set of bar stools to perfectly match your current home style. There are web sites that allow you to send in your own fabric to be used as upholstery for the bar stool set.

A great finishing touch to your bar area is to install a radio or small TV in to watch while you cook, eat a quick meal or relax over drinks.

Kathryn Whittaker writes articles on a number of different topics. For more information on Bar Stools please visit Bar Stools Guide and for additional Bar Stool articles please visit the following article page Bar Stools Articles.

Tips on Gardening

Gardening

What better way to relax after a hard day than to take a stroll in your garden or just enjoy the spectacular view of your garden sipping your evening tea and the vegetables from your very own garden cannot be found anywhere else! Gardening is an art which requires skill. Having a garden in your home is a luxury but it also requires a lot of pampering and care. Maintaining a garden would need time and work as it needs regular watering, fertilizing, weeding and monitoring for disease and insect problems

To develop and maintain a garden you will need proper planning. You would have to decide on where to start your garden, then decide on what you want. If you are planning for vegetable garden then what vegetables you want to grow or for a flower garden then what kinds of flowers you would want. You should also take into consideration the type of soil as soil is the most important element for healthy growth.

Vegetable garden:

The joy of eating home grown vegetables is something which you cannot describe. It is perhaps the most rewarding thing about gardening. It is not necessary that you need a big space to grow vegetables. Of course having a large space has its own advantage as you grow variety of vegetables but even if you do not have space you need not be disappointed. Some vegetables can also be grown in small spaces even in pots or planter boxes

Proper sunlight is important for your vegetables. Vegetables producing fruits need direct sunlight but leafy vegetables like cabbage or lettuce have to be grown in partial shade. The type of vegetables to grow in your garden will depend on the season they should be grown. Vegetables which come in spring include lettuce, radish, asparagus and they are quick growing vegetables. Winter vegetables are like potatoes, carrots and squash. Beans, peas, cabbage, cauliflower; tomatoes are seen in plenty in summers.

Use of Fertilizers:

Many different nutrient elements are essential for good growth of vegetables, but nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) are the three most important nutrients. Nutrients like Calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) are supplied by limestone and the other required elements they get from air, water, and soil. Fertilizers provide minerals to promote green growth, root growth, hardiness and disease resistance. These fertilizers are generally sold by grade and contain two or three major plant nutrients. If your garden has been fertilized for years, then the soil will have high levels of phosphorus and potassium. So nitrogen is the only required fertilizer as additional phosphorus and potassium are not required.
Different vegetables have different fertilizer requirements. Leafy vegetables require a lot of nitrogen as compared to other vegetables and root vegetables need more phosphorous and potash for their development.

Tips for gardening:

Maintain the soil as the roots of grass plants obtain needed moisture and nutrients from the soil and in order for roots to function they need plenty of oxygen in the soil.

Apply fertilizer before or at planting.

Use little amount of fertilizer in frequent intervals.

Regular watering of the plants is necessary. The recommendation for watering depends on the season.

Well-drained soil that is slightly acid to neutral (6.0 to 7.0) is necessary.

Regular monitoring for disease and insect problems

Useful Feng Shui Tips for Bedroom

May 12, 2008 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

The best Feng Shui bed room tip that a Feng Shui expert can offer you is to have your bed in ‘command position’.

But before you know what is a command position for your bed it is important for you to understand what is Feng Shui.

It is important for you to know Feng Shui is an ancient spiritual discipline which makes use of a process that affects your internal landscape just as much as it affects your physical environment be your home, office or your bed room. Before you start practicing or using Feng Shui enhancements to your living environment it is important for you to know that it is for nourishing and healing your soul. In a Feng Shui practice one is enriching the soul by directing the energies of universe and natural elements such as wind, water, earth, metals to it.

It is so important to stay positive and constantly filled with good, flowing energy. If you do so, your life and all the things you are surrounded by will represent such wonderful qualities as health, happiness, prosperity, love and contentment.

As you know, one of the principles of Feng Shui is that Chi flows through all objects in a space, and each item that is present in or around your home has some effect on whether Chi moves freely or gets clogged up and the same principles apply to your bed room also.

Feng Shui believes all types of energies on the earth fall in two opposite categories, yin and yang. Once you understand this you can understand the logic behind the best Feng Shui bed room tip offered here.

Bedroom is a place where you spend 1/3 of your time so having proper balance of yin and yang is very essential, some yang energy is essential, because it helps you stay motivated get going with your day-to-day chores but too much yang on the other hand can drive you nuts! It can make you feel chaotic, frenzied and over-stimulated. It can make you feel too passionate, so that you can never just sit back and relax in your bed room.

A command position for your bed room in Feng Shui means that you face the door from the far side of the room but are not directly in front of the door. The part of the room diagonally farthest from the entry offers the best Command Position for your bed, it is this position, you are able to benefit from the Chi that enters and flows through the space, while being far enough removed from the doorway that you are not exposed to Chi that is too strong.

Another Feng Shui bed room tip is that you keep your beds in a position that provides a solid wall behind you for support. Using this position puts you in visual command of the space, and allows you to face life directly, both literally and symbolically.

Sleeping in line with the door also exposes you to excessive Chi, which can contribute to stress, irritability and health problems, but keeping your bed in commanding position prevents you from negative influences and puts you in control of your space and of your life.

Another Feng Shui bed room tip that I would like to mention about is that never keep your working desk or computer in your bedroom. The logic behind this Feng Shui tip is that the energy of computer (work) and that of rest (bed) are opposite to each other and are therefore incompatible to each other. But in case you cannot avoid this combination you can at least separate the two by using Feng Shui Elements.

As discussed earlier that Feng Shui tips are universal in nature they are applicable to each space or area as discussed in the article on Feng Shui Bagua and the logic behind each Feng Shui tip remains the same. Take for example the Feng Shui bed room tip that advises you not to keep your bed where there is window behind but ideally it should be on your right. The logic behind this Feng Shui tip is to receive the positive energies from the universe when you get up and start a new day.

Though on the outset you may think these to be fairly simple Feng Shui bed room tips, but in reality these tips have strong spiritual or scientific foundation. For example, placing your desk with your back to a large window does not go well with Feng Shui and to think practically working at a computer in this position may be problem because of the glare from the window.

There can be many more Feng Shui bed room tips that can be offered. You can also make use of Feng Shui Color and Feng Shui Elements for balancing yin and yang of your bed room. Like making use of red pillows or changing the color of your bed room curtains, but for that you need to consider many other factors also.

Avoid the overhead beams, the low side of a slanted ceiling, sharp angles from interior corners, and an overhead fan in a room with a low ceiling are some of the common Feng Shui bed room tips that you can find in any Feng Shui book or web site.
