Feng Shui Decorating Guidelines

April 20, 2008 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

The importance of following feng shui decorating guidelines.

Feng shui decorating guidelines show us the correct way to place objects, furniture and how to decorate in order to achieve harmony. Living and working spaces and their decorations affect the people inhabiting them, and feng shui decorating knowledge studies the way to make that factor affect in a positive and harmonic way.

If you want to learn and be able to follow feng shui decorating tips, the first thing to do is to learn about feng shui in general and its main concepts. By learning this, you will find yourself naturally acquiring information on how to decorate any different spaces according to feng shui.

According to feng shui decorating guidelines, the way and the position in which we place our furniture, the colors we choose, the different objects and places we choose for them, everything can be done in a way that ensures harmony. Actually, in China people are used to look for a feng shui expert to guide them in occasions such as when they buy a new house.

Following feng shui decorating guidelines is not the same as decorating in order to make a space pretty or nice looking but it is about making it be in harmony with us. Actually, many times a decoration done by following feng shui would not look nice or be esthetically correct at all. By following feng shui, we could end up doing some of the things we would never have thought to do in our decoration.

For example, the position we place a bed can have main importance according to feng shui decorating tips. A bed should be placed in a position that allows the person to easily look at the door, but at the same time it should not be facing it directly and it should be against a wall. Even if this leads to an option which you wouldn’t have thought of for you to place your bed, you should do so in order to be able to sleep well and comfortable.

Feng shui does not see decoration with the same eyes a merely esthetically based decoration does. Feng shui decorating guidelines are meant to help people make their spaces as much harmonic and positive for their inhabitants as possible, even if esthetics have to be sacrificed for it.

Remodeling A Beautiful Art Activity for the Family

April 18, 2008 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Remodeling is one of the most exciting things that a family can do together. It is a good time to make decisions and improvements, together as a family. It may be fun but it is also critical, as this involves time, effort, and money. But the satisfaction and fulfillment the family gets or experiences in the end is truly a wonderful experience. Remodeling a house involves several things—an open mind, a bright idea, and a good working plan.

When a family is planning to renovate or reconstruct their house, it doesn’t mean that they got bored of the structure of their house (although, this may be partly a reason), but it’s more of the family’s new needs, wants, and requirements, plus, it’s also adding value to the house, if the family decides to move out and sell the house.

One must also think that remodeling a house is a collective decision, this doesn’t mean that only one person must choose which paint or wallpaper to use, or what material to utilize in all the corners and rooms of the house. It would lose its purpose if only the man of the house gets to say what goes where, especially if he doesn’t use that room, because in the end, he’ll not be the one looking or staring at the brown walls or zebra-colored ceilings; but rather, the one who’ll suffer that forced design, is the person using or staying in that room. Wouldn’t that sound unfair? How would your teenage daughter feel if you’ll insist on following your “medieval” ideas on her room? It’s the same thing if your hippie son insists on painting your master’s bedroom all black with weird artifacts on your desk and wild paintings hanging on your wall. It’s simply putting your feet in other people’s shoes. At least, when it comes to the living room, dining room, entertainment room, kitchen, and other common rooms in the house, everyone has to compromise, especially, that they’re not the only ones who’ll be visiting or staying in these rooms, but there are also guests to think of.

One mustn’t think that, he can just do whatever design or renovation to his house, he must think of the costs as well. it’s not just about reconstructing, but rather adding value to the house—for you, for the visitors, and for the new homeowners if ever you decide to sell the house. At least, think of how you can recoup the expenses, and also check if the cost you’re planning to expend is really worth it. It doesn’t mean that because it’s truly beautiful aesthetically, it’s saleable to all, it’s not always the case, because people would not buy your $100,000 house in a $30,000 house neighborhood.

Simply put, remodeling is an art that would make you, your community, and your house happy.

Furniture For Patio, Game Room And Crafts

April 17, 2008 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

In this final edition of home furniture we’re going to review some of the odds and ends type of pieces you might find in or out of someone’s home.

Most people’s favorite room in the house is the game room. This is where we all go to play, have fun and basically get away from the everyday hassles of life. Game rooms can be very diverse and most of the furniture one would find in a game room would be the games themselves.

The most common piece of furniture one might find in a game room is a pool table. While the shape of a pool table is standard, the sizes are not. There are regulation size pool tables which can be as large as 8 foot long and then you have your smaller than regulation tables which are usually 6 or 7 feet in length. As for the material pool tables are made of, most of them are made of wood but the type of wood can vary greatly and because of this, the price of the tables themselves can vary from hundreds to thousands of dollars.

Another common piece of furniture in a game room is a ping pong table. These too can be regulation at 5 by 9 feet or smaller. Ping pong tables take a lot of abuse so they are made very strong, usually of hard aluminum. There are plenty of styles of these tables to choose from.

Of course no game room would be complete without a bar. Most of these are built into the room and are very stylishly designed. These bars are usually about 6 by 3 feet and are made of many different types of wood with shelves in the back to store your beverage of choice, whatever that may be.

Moving out of the game room we have the ever popular patio. You have, of course heard the joke about the Irish gentleman who lived out doors. His name was patio furniture. Okay, maybe it’s not that funny but patio furniture is a big craze with many people. Who can resist sitting out doors in the blazing sun and getting fried to a crisp. Your basic patio furniture consists of tables and chairs, an umbrella, benches, rockers, porch swings, and a ton of garden accessories.

Then of course you have your hobbyist type furniture. For example, for those who like to sew you have your sewing tables. Of course today, in order to be politically correct, they’re called work tables, and quite honestly can be adapted to just about any kind of hobby. Of course to keep or store your arts and crafts they have what are called craft armoires. These are really just fancy cabinets but don’t tell the craftsmen that. For true artists you have craft tables, art easels, and what they call art taborets. These are just fancy tall dressers but they are very popular.

Needless to say there are more kinds of furniture than we have hours in the day to go over them. We have just scratched the surface in these past three articles which makes you wonder; how come so many furniture stores go out of business?

How To Make The Difficult Decision Between Vinyl And Wood Blinds

April 15, 2008 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Homeowners now have many more choices for window blinds than just the old standby blinds of the past that could easily bend and break. Many homeowners and home improvement experts are choosing to go with wood or vinyl blinds with a width of two inches to really make the room look more elegant.

The custom blinds are considerably less expensive than wood shutters and not only that but they also allow for more natural light which makes nearly any room look better. It wasn’t too long ago that buying wide blinds like this wouldn’t be a cost effective way of dealing with a window treatment situation but now there are varied choices that almost anyone can afford.

So, how does one choose between wood blinds or vinyl blinds? For starters you need to know that there positives and negatives on both, and the major difference is price and color. Wood blinds will be quite a bit more expensive than vinyl but they are also available in a much wider assortment of colors.

You should endeavor to match the wood that is already in you home if you have wood trim and molding. With the variety of color choices it should be relatively easy to match the stain. Wood blinds can add a look of elegance and sophistication and make any room go from blah to wow!

Believe it or not wood blinds are also lighter than vinyl in most cases and could be the perfect choice for those extra wide double or triple windows. Because the wood blinds are lighter this can prevent the bowing that is prevalent in the middle of blinds on large windows. Wood blinds may also be made custom fit the same way as vinyl to give a uniform look.

When it comes to money the vinyl blinds will definitely be a good bit less expensive than their wood counterpart. If your color choices are white, off white, or ivory then vinyl blinds can a good choice for you, especially if you are watching your money. As a rule vinyl is simpler to keep clean because wood is so susceptible to water damage.

These days your choices and selection are so varied that you can have plenty to choose from and save you money the same time. Check with your local supply store like Lowe’s or Home Depot. You can also find incredible choices online as the internet is a vast resource for any and all things and the home improvement arena is no different.

After the Curb Appeal - Redesign Your Living Room and Set the Stage for a Succesful Real Estate Sale

April 14, 2008 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

First impressions are everything. For a home owner entering the real estate market, it means trimming hedges, changing outdoor fixtures, and perhaps painting the front door the perfect color. Curb appeal is crucial to the successful sale of a home, but what comes next can actually make or break the deal. The entrance way and living room is the best chance to wow a potential buyer once they have crossed the threshold and entered the home.

Today’s home buyers are accustomed to seeing rooms with a designer’s touch — thanks to TV shows and magazines — not to mention all the beautifully decorated model homes that are also competing for the attention of your potential buyer. Redesigning the home to ready it for a competitive real estate market is more important than ever. Let the interior of your home make a lasting impression by “staging” the home just like professionals do.

It is important to give a polished look to a living room by eliminating clutter and sprucing up the interior elements. The flooring and fixtures should of course be updated, but just as important, is making sure the room’s purpose is clearly defined. If the living room is also serving as an office space, now is the time to repurpose another room in the home or hide the office away in an armoire. Use furniture to highlight the room’s purpose and remove any extra pieces. A seating area in front of a beautifully dressed window or fireplace can make an inviting focal point and show off desired features of the home.

If you have an entrance way, make it pleasing to the eye and a hint of things to come. All personal items should be removed. A beautiful mirror can be used to enlarge the space visually, and a small table with flowers or other accessory is enough to create a warm welcome.

Older real estate can have the look and feel of a model home by prepping the room and removing extra items while highlighting with a few accessories themed to the room’s color scheme and style. Wall color, textiles, and accessories are the three key ingredients to giving your home that fresh appeal. Slipcovers in fresh, new colors can be added to an outdated sofa. A coffee table or other accent pieces can display a few beautiful accessories that engage a buyer and help a buyer imagine living in the home.

When it comes to layering the accessories, less is more. Begin by first removing any items that might cause a buyer to feel like an “intruder” in your home. This includes personal pictures, political and religious items. Your home is now your investment; you want to get top dollar on that investment and have a number of buyers bidding on the home. Find items like books, art, pottery, pillows and throws to warm up your home’s interior. Use glass or highly polished finishes for sparkle and newness. Fresh flowers, plants or fruit will also instantly add life to a room while also adding a punch of color.

By engaging the senses with beautiful accessories, textiles and color, as well as giving a clear purpose to your living room, you create a room that will have home buyers easily imagining themselves living there. Your buyer will be ready to make an offer worthy of your investment.

Organic Home Furniture Goes Mainstream

April 13, 2008 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Organic foods have been around for decades, and those concerned about the pesticides and chemicals used in industrial farming have long turned to organics to ensure that the foods they eat are healthy and pure. Increasingly, though, people who don’t consider themselves to be naturalists or environmentalists are embracing eco-friendly foods and home furnishings.

Whether out of a concern for the diminishing rain forests or for the chemicals found in the carpet that their baby crawls on, there is a growing market for eco-friendly furniture and home furnishings. From organic mattresses made from cotton and wool to wood furniture made from reclaimed wood, there is a myriad of eco-friendly home furniture from which to choose.

Typically, manufacturers of eco-friendly wood furniture and decorative wood home furnishings use reclaimed timber. In other words, the wood that is used to make furniture was logged long ago and was once a bridge or other structure. By using reclaimed wood, furniture makers recycle timber that has already been logged instead of cutting down trees. Similarly, makers of eco-friendly bed linens use cotton grown on small organic farms or wool harvested organically raised sheep.

The variety of available eco-friendly wood furniture and other wood home furnishings is astounding. Many of the pieces have artisan craftsmanship, and can be proudly displayed alongside antique furniture. Wood furniture inspired by the Viking and Celtic peoples is very popular. A CD cabinet, for example, might feature Celtic scroll carving embellishments or knobs engraved with a Celtic knot pattern. Likewise, a Celtic desk might include a lattice footrest or brass handles, and be made from antique elm wood.

The popularity of Viking motifs is gaining, especially in decorative pieces. For example, a shield featuring Viking sea dragons inspired by historic carvings found in Sweden dating from between the ninth and twelfth centuries adds a touch of history and mystery to a living room’s d

First Aid for a Dried Out Hanging Basket

April 12, 2008 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Let’s face it: Our houseplants aren’t the most important things on our to-do lists, and even the most attentive gardeners will sometimes forget to water the hanging baskets. The good news is that unless the plants are completely dead, they can usually be revived.

Begin by clipping off dead flowers and browning leaves. See! It looks better already. Now cut back yellowing stems and stems with a good many yellowing leaves to encourage the plant to send out new shoots. If your plant has trailing stems, you may have to detangle the stems first to determine which are worth keeping.

If you’re like me, you may find it hard to clip off buds that will be opening soon, so use your own judgment to determine if this is necessary. A plant with a lot of damage will have more trouble recovering if it’s trying to support buds during the recovery period, and the buds may eventually fall off without opening anyway. If the damage is mild, leave the buds that are on undamaged stems in place.

Watering a dried out basket can be difficult. You may find that as you pour water into the basket it simply runs out without wetting the soil. The best way to overcome this is to run a pan of tepid water, and add a drop or two of dishwashing liquid. The dishwashing liquid acts as a wetting agent and allows the water to soak into the soil. Set your plant inside the pan of water and leave it for at least an hour, or until the basket is saturated, and mist the plants a time or two while they soak. If there are heavy chains or ropes attached to your basket, support them with a stick so that they don’t lay on top of your plants. When the plants are dry, it doesn’t take much weight to break the stems and leaves.

At this point we want to do everything we can to help our plants get back on their feet, but it’s best to avoid feeding them for about five days. This gives them time to overcome the shock before trying to send out new shoots.

Watch your recovering plants closely for signs of insects or disease. In their weakened state, they are more susceptible to pests and fungus, and they should be treated right away if you suspect a problem. Before you know it, your basket will be bursting with blooms again.

Transform Your Bedroom With Fine Linens

April 11, 2008 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

A bedroom makeover with fine linens is a great alternative to the full interior design projects seen in decorating magazines and a step up from linen and things. But not many have an interior designer’s expertise or someone else do the leg room of running all over town to find specialty linens.

Instead they cross their fingers and hope the colors will work or that the bed sheet’s thread count really is what the label says it is. And your fingertips can tell the difference between fine linens, (it’s called ‘the hand of a fabric’) and cheaper knockoffs that are blends of combed cotton and synthetics.

The market for bedding, linen and bath accessories by specialty household furnishing stores has grown significantly with the recent housing boom. These customers have disposable income, a passion for luxury in their homes, and the need for design direction to recreate the interior styles they see in design magazines. The real art of interior design is helping these customers figure out what they really want, what will work, and what is affordable.

Limited design projects may be your ticket. You can easily accomplish a bedroom makeover - for instance sheets, duvet cover, shams, and punch it up with tossed pillows to match your rugs. You can even do a custom headboard or a window treatment with drapes that fits your style and budget.

The effect will be dramatic but it doesn’t set you back a lot because you can choose designer fabrics that fit your budget. If you want 1,020 thread count sheets, they’re at your fingertips. Ask for proof of authenticity of the long staple cotton.
