Kitchen Cabinets Basics

December 31, 2007 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Kitchen cabinets have always been important, not only to organize and keep things nice and neat in the kitchen, but also as a main design feature for the whole house.

With the growth of kitchens and kitchen appliances the kitchen cabinets have transformed themselves too, to fid the modern requirements of kitchens, more space to hold more electric kitchen appliances, and better durability are the main features of kitchen cabinets.
Where you place your kitchen cabinets will impact how efficient your kitchen is.

Most women and men who enjoy cooking will profess to the fact that they don’t have enough cabinet space, even though this can be a problem always, and in every kitchen, you can pick a kitchen cabinet plan that utilizes your space so you make the most of every corner, thus making your kitchen perfectly adjustable to your needs.

A well designed kitchen is one of the most attractive features a home can have. It can be of a sleek, modern design or something that is completely old fashioned. Whatever the case, quality kitchen cabinets are essential in creating the ultimate kitchen.

Researching kitchen cabinets on the internet is an excellent way of finding out what you need to get going, and how much its going to cost you, it doesn’t take long until you will understand the basic cost and requirements. There are a lot of websites devoted to home design. There are even places where you can design your own virtual kitchen complete with your own quality kitchen cabinets. Another way to generate some hot ideas is to visit your local bookstore and raid the magazine section.

Home design magazines are all over the racks these days because people really love to upgrade their homes. You can flip through them and find something that really catches your eye with regard to quality cabinets.
Many stores have entire sections devoted to quality cabinets. While you might not find the exact ones that you want to put into your kitchen, you can get an idea of what is out there. All you have to do is find a creative contractor and have him draw up the plans.

My suggestion is to work closely with the contractor to ensure that the cabinets that are installed are quality cabinets.

When looking for quality pricing is always an issue, but experience has teacher us that sometimes looking around can get you good results, quality doesn’t always mean that you will have to overpay. I hope that this has provided you with sufficient information about kitchen cabinets and that you will find it fun to shop and plan them, and enjoy your cabinets for many years. Good luck.

Computer Desk Buyers Guide

December 30, 2007 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

In purchasing a computer desk, considering there are so many types, you have to see which type fits your needs. There are a large assortment of computer desks from smaller basic desks to large ones which can fit your computer and all the accessories for it. Some types of computer desks are armoires, carts, cabinets, corner units, and L and U shaped desks. The main thing to look at when buying a computer desk is what desk is right for you?

Finding the computer desk that is right for you is the most important factor. Armoire desks are nice for the home office as they are also decorative. Armoire computer desks have cabinets and usually drawers which can hold other items computer or not computer related. Different shaped computer desks can be put in the home or office to fit where they can be most practical. Computer carts can be moved around easily and also placed out of the way if need be. The type of desk will differ depending on what you will use it for and how often you use it.

Computer furniture can be a simple top and legs or ones that have drawers, cabinets, and other decorative and practical features. Many computer desks also have slide out appendages under the desktop to place your keyboard on, which saves space on your actual desktop. Space is an important factor, as well, depending on if you have a laptop or desktop computer. There are many computer desks which cater to both. For desktop computers, which are larger, there are places for the monitor, keyboard, and tower. Computer armoires can be simple or with many features it all depends on what would be most useful for you.

Comfort is also an important factor, especially when purchasing executive desks. The more comfortable you are working at your desk the more productive you will be. You want to choose a desk which fits with your size. Finding a chair that fits the desk is key as well. It is important to pick the computer desk and chair which fit you and your computer.

There is a wide variety of computer furniture available. Finding the right one for you is the most important aspect in buying a computer desk.

Plans for Storage Shelving 101

December 29, 2007 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Plans for storage shelving refers to either the designs for the storage shelves themselves or the strategy for the layouts of a storage shelving system. Whatever the case, such plans for storage shelving is complex and will undoubtedly involve an eclectic amalgamation of resources.

Among these resources are shelves made of a variety of materials, such as canvas, wood, metal, and even plastic. Each of these materials have advantages and disadvantages when it comes to planning for storage shelving, and both the pros and cons must be taken into consideration if such a plan is beneficial and workable.

Canvas storage shelves, made of 100% cotton, can provide sturdiness, flexibility dryness, protection for all content stored, the last two of which are especially the case if the canvas shelves feature a hook-on cover or a snapping lid. Canvas shelves include organizers, drawers, dressers, and totes/boxes.

All of these can be compacted and made travel-ready. Plans for storage shelving should then include these canvas items for the sake of these advantages. However, canvas can burn and rip with some great effort, so care must be conducted. Plans for storage shelving should reflect these considerations as well.

Wood is by far the firmest and most stable material used for shelving, and is less likely to collapse to the weight of storage due to its heavy molecular density. Because of this, wooden shelves are among the most commonly used for storage.

Metal is the same way, but unlike wood, metal is least able to burn. Further, both wood and metal shelves are incapable of being compacted or made travel-ready (they are either one solid piece of furniture, or they must be assembled and disassembled), unless they are small units stacked together. Plans for storage shelving must take these contingencies into account when involving wooden and metal shelves.

Although sturdy, plastic gives off a toxic smell when burnt, and like wood and metal, cannot be compacted or be made travel-ready. Plans for storage shelving would not be wise to include plastic shelving, nor should plans for storage shelving reflect building in plastic for these reasons.

Plans for storage shelving, if sound, should be forethought well in advance to consider the benefits and drawbacks of each kind of material to be used in creating a shelving strategy. Such plans will only work if these conditions are addressed and safety and stability are insured in the storage shelving. Plans for storage shelving are useless if the shelves are ineffective in facilitating adequate storage accommodations.

Color in the Garden

December 27, 2007 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Discover color in foliage. I don’t know why people think of flowers
when a garden is mentioned. Blooming plants make a noticeable
accent only when in bloom and in sufficient numbers to be seen
from a distance. On the other hand, foliage is present in large quantities
all summer long, presenting their leafy faces to the sun and our own
admiring eyes.

Many plants qualify as colorful additions to our garden. One of
my favorites is the large leaf hosta in dusty blue shades. One
clump of this easily found plant covers a square yard of area,
nodding with the breezes and even sending up racemes of lilac
blooms in June. Large leafed coleus can be treated as a potted
plant for good effect as accent pieces. Platter sized caladiums
adds a point of focus in your garden. Don’t pass up decorative
grasses with their tall tan fronds supplying motion as well as color.

Evergreens that shine with sunny yellows and chartreuse are
the golden arbor vitae and variegated hollies. Reds are
represented by Japanese maples, especially the finely divided
miniatures. When visiting your local nursery in the Spring, choose
plants with extra light or dark foliage for accenting the ubiquitous
leaf green. Flowering weeping varieties of some trees sport leaves
of a golden color like the golden chain tree. Twisted willow leaves
are of a jade green color. Large Norwegian maples are to be
avoided because they absorb too much light in the garden and
grow too large for most spaces.

With the instant effect of colorful leaves painting a picture in
your garden, you are then free to place the finishing touches with
your favorite flowers. Just think of the painting it would make!

Retirement downsized my garden but not my enthusiasm.

Fizzy Sherbet - A Sweet Science Lesson for Your Kids!

December 26, 2007 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Fizzy sherbet in a paper bag with a strawberry lollipop was probably my favorite treat as a child, but I never knew what was in the sherbet and why it sparkled and tingled on my tongue! Try making some with your kids and enjoy a mini science lesson in the process.

The basis of the sherbet is icing sugar (confectioners’ sugar). 50g will make enough for about 6 children. For that amount you will also need a scant teaspoon each of bicarbonate of soda and citric acid. You can buy the latter, in the form of a white powder, very cheaply in small quantities from your chemist or pharmacy. Children will also enjoy having a lollipop or liquorice stick to dip into the sherbet.

Simply mix all the powders together thoroughly, divide into separate containers, and provide something to dip with. Fingers will do at a pinch, but there will be a lot of stickiness involved! Let the kids try dipping into some plain icing sugar as well as the sherbet mixture, to compare the two. They will be amazed at the difference.

So where does the fizz come from? It is a reaction between the citric acid (the same acid as in lemons) and the bicarbonate of soda, which is an alkali. In this case the chemical reaction happens on your tongue, as the two dry ingredients mix with water (saliva) and create a gas in the form of lots of tiny little bubbles. The bubbles provide the tingle in your mouth.

You are creating the same chemical reaction when you drop a bath bomb into your bath water. The active dry ingredients - which again include bicarbonate of soda and citric acid - react when they meet the water of the bath. And you get the same fizzing reaction if you add vinegar, another acid, to bicarbonate of soda. In this case, however, the reaction happens immediately because the vinegar is liquid. Combining vinegar and bicarbonate of soda is actually an old-fashioned cleaning recipe, used to help remove stubborn stains in the kitchen. Perhaps your kids could try scrubbing the sink with the mixture and a kitchen sponge to see how well it works!

Now, back to your fizzy sherbet. Remember, to keep your sherbet for any length of time, you will have to keep it dry. Store it in little re-sealable plastic bags ready to dip, or in a plastic food container. Make sure the kids don’t eat too much in one go, because it can make your mouth (and stomach) a little sore in very large quantities! If you package little bags of sherbet and lollipops together (perhaps adding a bright ribbon and label) you can make a super addition for a party bag or even an unusual and popular treat to sell at a school fete or other fundraising occasion.

Granite Tile Countertops

December 25, 2007 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

The beauty and warmth of granite makes it an ideal material for aesthetic appeal in home design. Granite has been a popular choice of designers for decades. Adding solid granite countertops to a kitchen can be quite costly, with prices starting at $60 a foot installed. Although granite countertops are very popular, solid granite countertops may not be for everyone. A homeowner may not be willing or able to invest in granite, or a home is in an area subject to limitations on resale values. In cases like this, it may be best to consider granite tile countertops as an acceptable alternative to the solid stone installations.

Granite tile countertops are fashioned from the same desirable stone as the solid granite countertops. All the desirable elements of the granite remain the same in the tiles. Not all blocks taken from the quarry are large enough for the slabs for the solid countertops. Smaller blocks and broken slabs will be cut into square tiles measuring 12, 24 or 36 inches in diameter. Granite tiles have a variety of uses that include premium flooring and shower installations. Hundreds of color choices are available to fit with most any design scheme.

Granite tile countertops can withstand a hot pot without a trivet, and serve as an excellent surface for handling dough and confectionery. The natural beauty of granite tile countertops complement most any type of wood or style of cabinetry. The versatility of granite tiles creates a wide range of options for installations. Entire sections of kitchen countertops and backsplashes can be crafted from granite tiles, just as ceramic tiles would be used. To lessen the labor of installing tiles in a large kitchen, only add granite tiles to the island for a focal point, setting it apart from ordinary material choices on the other countertops.

Granite tiles provide a grand solution for the homeowner on a budget, allowing the home chef to enjoy all the benefits of granite countertops. Twenty-four or thirty-six inch tiles can be inlaid or set into any other material, such as laminated countertops or solid wood. Strategically placed twenty-four inch granite tiles inlaid near the range or oven will protect ordinary countertops from searing hot pans. A thirty-six inch granite tile set into the counter at a work area serves as an excellent surface for rolling dough and working with confectionery.

The practical and aesthetic choice of granite tile countertops has proven to be a wise investment for homeowners. Clever design plans allow homeowners to enjoy the benefits of granite without great expense. Granite tile countertops offer matchless appeal.

December 24, 2007 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Rustic furniture generally refers to one of two things: furniture handcrafted out of authentic materials or furniture that seems handmade. Thinking About Home Improvement Then Here’s a Checklist!

December 23, 2007 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Dear friends, if you are planning to improve/renovate or
refurnish your home then this article can be a very
useful guide and save your lot of time.

When it comes to home improvement, most people think that
it’s has to do with painting the house from inside out
and forget about it.

But any architectural structure is much more than just walls
and ceiling. There are many systems working simultaneously
which keep the building under function.

Let’s have a look at these systems one by one.

1) Structural System:

This includes the support system of the entire building, namely
foundation, columns, beams, slabs(in R.C.C structure).
The most commonly used structural systems is R.C.C. Other types
include steel and wood.

While renovating a building special attention must be given to
the structural support system. Slabs should be checked to be
leak proof. Columns and beams which are exposed to external
atmosphere must be checked for damage. R.C.C structural members
are always covered with plaster. This plaster must be without
damage.

In case of steel structures, anti-rust treatment must be applied
wherever necessary.

In case of wooden structure anti-termite treatment must be applied
wherever necessary.

2) Plumbing System:

All pipelines which carry water in and out of the structure must
be checked for leakage. The main are of possible leakage is
at the joints, hence must be carefully treated.

Water taps at the washbasins, inside bathrooms, kitchen sinks,
toilet blocks, should be checked for good and smooth operating
conditions.

3)Drainage System:

Drainage from kitchen, bathrooms, toilets should have an unobstructed
and shortest path to outside chambers. Any clogging of these lines
can cause overflowing of the chambers, hence should be checked
and cleaned.

4)Electrical Systems:

This starts with the main supply of the electricity from the
local authorities. The point of entering the main supply should be
checked for any excessive disturbance in voltage levels, which
might cause damage to electrical appliances inside.

All switch boards and switches in respective rooms should be checked
for proper and safe functioning. Security systems such as
earthing and M.C.B’s should be checked for safe functioning.

5) Doors and Windows

These form an important part of any structure as far as safety
is concerned. Proper functioning of the doors and window
shutters is necessary. If your home has a security alarm system
installed, then it must be kept updated and in proper working condition.

Door and window shutter hinges should be applied with lubricants
for smooth operations. I case of sliding doors and windows, tracks
which allow sliding should be dust free.

6) Glass Panes

All glass panes used on windows and doors should be dust free.
Any broken or cracked glass panes should be replaced immediately.

If the building has a skylight, then it should be checked to be
leak proof and clean, to allow clear and unobstructed sunlight in
the interiors.

7) Flooring Materials

In most cases tiles are used for flooring. All tiles should be
checked for cracks and most importantly leveling.

In every home flooring has a natural slope to avoid clogging
of water if any such situation arises. Tiled flooring
must be checked at joints. Any cracks in joins must be
checked with proper bonding material.

In case of wooden flooring, extra care must be taken to keep
the flooring termite-free.

8) Wall Plaster and Wall Paint.

All external walls must be checked from outside for a proper
layer of plaster. Plaster prevents the rainwater to seep inside
the structure. If external plaster gets damaged, rain water
seeps inside causing dampening of walls.

All internal walls must be checked for scraping of paint.

8) Furniture and Carpentry Items.

All furniture items must be termite free and sturdy at the
joints. A coat of good quality wooden polish can add life
to the furniture pieces.

Other carpentry work includes door and window shutters, door
and window frames.

9) Other Accessories.

This includes small thing which matter a lot, such as all the
locking arrangement at doors, windows, towel rods in the
bathroom/wash basins, arrangement to dry washed clothes,
storage arrangements in kitchen/bathroom.

10)External Systems

This can include a solar water heater, electric pumps to push
the water from underground water tank to Overhead water tank.,
Cable TV antennas.

All these systems must be checked for proper functioning.

From the above discussion it is clear that proper functioning
of any architectural structure is dependant of many complex
systems which work simultaneously.

Hence all these must be given attention and respect. Any building
is just like a human body, with movable and stationary parts.
If dealt with proper care can give a very healthy living experience
for years to come.

I hope this article was helpful to everyone.

Easy Ideas For Decorating the family Home

December 22, 2007 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Believe it or not but decoration your home can be very therapeutic. Everyone gets a bit fed up from time to time and we don’t always know why. Quite often, our stale and familiar surroundings can play a subconscious roll in our general mood. The great thing about decorating your home, or rooms in the home, is that it can lift our mood. Now that doesn’t necessarily have to mean a full blown face lift is needed to get that fresh new look. This is good news to many, as a full makeover can be a both a time consuming and costly exercise.

You never get a second chance to make a first impression, and I’m not just talking about impressing visitors to your home, I’m talking about impressing you impressing yourself. It is you that needs to be in love with your living spaces whether that’s a studio squat, or a stately mansion, it has to feel right for you. I’ve outlined a few tips below which I’ve picked up over the years, and most of these are quick and easy tasks which can make a huge difference to your living spaces. Okay, here goes:

Purchase a few cushions and throw them around the chairs and sofas. Have contrasting colors and sizes. Always have odd numbers though. A set of 3 or 5 across a sofa will work much better than 2 or 4. The instantaneous difference this makes will amaze you.

Try painting just one of your walls. It doesn’t even have to be the biggest or main wall, but it can be if you like. The different color that you add to just one wall can completely transform your room beyond all previous recognition. You can also attempt a specialist paint affect too. Dabbing a contrasting color on top of the base coat using a Mediterranean Sea sponge can give a real professional finish to any wall. What I usually do is paint the base color (say mid blue), then dab all over the wall with a sea sponge using a different color (say light blue) then dab over the mid color using the base color again to mute it. Absolutely beautiful effect that anyone can achieve with a little patience.

Break a large wall up with a big mirror or a painting of some sorts. Wall decorations, whatever you choose, can really smarten up the style of a room. I’ve always had a big mirror on at least one wall and a set of choice paintings or prints on another.

Place a rug on an otherwise barren floor space and it will also give your room a whole new look. If can be of any size at any angle, you will need to experiment a bit to find a look that appeals to you. My favorite is to place a rectangular run under a coffee table. I like the way the 2 items compliment each other.
