Tips for Choosing Window Blinds

August 20, 2007 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

In many homes and most offices, blinds are commonly used to give shade and privacy to the place. Unlike curtains, the amount of light that can be let in can be controlled if you have installed blinds on your windows.

Many people feel that the problem with having blinds is the installation. It may be true. But these people neglect the fact that there are also other things that have to be considered before purchasing blinds, not only the color and the size are important when choosing blinds for one’s home or office windows.

Here is some information.

* Style

Blinds can come in different styles, the most popular of which is the Venetian blinds. Decide on what style you wanted depending on the functionality and design of your windows.

Roller Shades - these are made specially treated opaque or vinyl fabric that is wrapped around a dowel, which employs a spring or a beaded cord system to roll the fabric up or down. This is good if you want to have complete privacy and to protect the furniture from fading. The ends can be straight or shaped, and trimmings or contrasting braid can be added as design.

Roman Shades - these blinds have a cord woven thru the fabric that allows you to raise or lower the shade in an accordion pattern.

Venetian Blinds - or horizontal blinds, have horizontal panels, made of wood or aluminum, which can be adjusted to change the level of sunlight that can be allowed in the room. These are available in different widths ranging from 16 mm to 50 mm.

Pleated Shades - these function similarly with Venetian blinds and have flat horizontal fabric panels. To let light enter from the top of the windows, you can have those that have “top-down” design.

Vertical Blinds - have vertical panels that can be adjusted to control the amount of light that enters. It can also be pulled to one side or both sides of the window to allow total natural illumination. Different types of fabric may be used in sizes from 89mm to 127mm.

Honeycomb Shades - are also known as cellular shades. These shades, thru layers of fabric capable of filtering light, can let light in and keep the heat or cold outside, thus giving the room insulation to save on your energy bills.

Woven Wood Shades - These are usually made of bamboo, and blocks direct sunlight from coming into the room but allow some natural light to come in.

Mini Blinds - are also known as macro, micro or aluminum blinds. These have one-inch or two-inch slats to adjust the amount of light that enters the room.

Shutters - these have parallel slats, or louvers, which can be adjusted to change the level of privacy.

* Measuring and Installing the Blinds

The blinds should be unobstructed that when it is fully extended, it can still hang freely.

For accurate measurements, it is recommended that you use a steel ruler.

* Cutting the Blinds

Cutting the Blinds is necessary to make the blinds fit the size of the windows. Before cutting the blinds, measure the desired width from one edge of the bracket to the other. The size of the winding mechanism should be deducted first before cutting the lath, the tube and the fabric to the correct size.

To cut the tube, a mini hacksaw can be used, while for the fabric, it is recommended that you use a cutting knife or a sharp pair of scissors.

* Cost

Apart from the cost of the blinds itself, also consider the cost for delivery. Delivery costs can add a lot to your purchase so make sure you know the details before placing an order.

What Is Compost And Why Does My Garden Need It

August 19, 2007 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Some people think compost is a just a bunch of manure. Others think it’s what happens to your body when you die and get buried, “My uncle Joe died last year and his body has been de-compostin’ ever since.” Compost is defined in the dictionary as “a mixture of decaying organic matter, as from leaves and manure, used to improve soil structure and provide nutrients.” That’s a great definition but it really doesn’t tell the whole story. It should say, “Compost is the greatest thing ever!!!” Well the dictionary probably won’t ever say that but I will.

Compost is created when yard & food waste decomposes. Micro organisms & invertebrates (also known as little buggers) feed on the waste, live their brief lives, reproduce, die and then they become waste too. This repeating cycle is how the soil gets it’s nutrients replenished. Like Mufasa said, “We all have our place in the circle of life.” When it comes to compost, it ’s just a very small circle.

Compost will happen on it’s own without any help from man. Look down at the ground in a dense forest. The leaves fall from the trees and decompose. This creates a rich soil that in turn feeds the trees. Compost just happens naturally and has been since the dawn of time. But man has figured out how to speed up the process. By mixing the right ratio of greens (grass clippings, coffee grinds, food waste, etc) with the right ratio of browns (leaves, hay, shredded newspapers, etc) and keeping the pile moist and well aerated you will create compost much quicker than nature.

Are you still asking what’s the big deal about compost? Add some of this stuff to your garden bed and you’ll know. Your plants will grow bigger and healthier. Sure you could add fertilizers and get the same results, for now. You see synthetic fertilizers eventually break down and after a few years will leave the soil salty. At some point you won’t be able to grow anything without lots of that fertilizer (they planned it that way to sell you more). It’s like raising a crack baby at that point. Well maybe not that bad but you get the idea.

Adding compost to the soil is creating healthy soil. You’re doing what nature is already trying to do but your just doing it faster and more efficiently.

Compost is not only great for your plants but it’s great for your soil and even for the environment. They say that in the United States that 30% of all garbage is lawn and garden waste. Instead of putting those leaves and grass clippings out at the curb they could be composted. That would not only cut down on the space needed in land fills but it would make everyone’s gardens grow bigger, healthier and less dependent on synthetic fertilizers.

I’ve described the benefits of compost and hopefully you’re ready to build or buy a compost bin and get started. Remember that nature is going to decompose your yard waste at it’s own pace anyway. Why not lend a hand and speed up the process.

Wicker Bathroom Furniture

August 18, 2007 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Wicker is basically a slender flexible branch, vine, or grass that is woven into a pattern. Wicker furniture and rattan furniture has a unique combination of strength and delicate workmanship. Wickerwork is created by weaving or interlacing wicker. Wicker furniture is made from weaving branches around a frame into the shapes of tables, chairs, and sofas. Wicker furniture can be made of willow, rattan, bamboo, reed, or synthetic materials. Wicker furniture is light and airy in nature. Wicker furniture is also popular as child-scaled furniture or as furnishings for a young woman’s bedroom.

Wicker furniture is also used as outdoor patio furniture. Because of its relatively light weight, the furniture is easy to position around the yard and easy to move indoors when the seasons change. In addition to outdoor and indoor furniture, wicker is also made into objects such as lampshades, chests, hampers, planters, porch swings, baby bassinets and carriages. Wicker and rattan furniture is very affordable, for both indoor and outdoor use, due to the use of relatively inexpensive raw materials.

Some examples of wicker furniture used in bathrooms are:

Wide Five-Drawer Wicker Storage Chest– This stylish storage chest of drawers has many uses, from storing bathroom linens to organizing sewing or craft supplies.

Burnham Console Table with Wicker Baskets–This impressive console table features clean lines and straightforward styling that will coordinate with most living room furniture motifs.

Bedroom Accessories - What and How to Choose

August 17, 2007 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

‘Bedroom accessories’ has become a catchall title for all items, furnishings, shelving systems, bedding, and linens found in a bedroom. Your bedroom is typically a room in whish you wish to shut the world out, take a break from the day, and relax. When buying bedroom accessories, make sure you are buying something that will enhance your bedrooms value to you.

Shelves are very useful bedroom accessories. These handy furnishings allow you to organize your belongings much more efficiently. Organization is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself and your bedroom. Shelves come in many shapes and sizes, the shelves that will work best for your bedroom, depend largely on the types of things you wish to display within your room. If you have fewer display items and/or books, you may prefer smaller shelves that take up less visual space. If your bedroom is small, painting your shelves, the same color, as your wall will give the appearance of a larger room and call less attention to the shelves themselves.

Other bedroom accessories include beds, which are quite useful when you think about it. Beds have rather self-explanatory functions, but there are different types of beds to consider in order to find the one that will work best for your room. You can choose between traditional beds in twin, full, queen, king, or California king sizes. In addition to traditional beds there are daybeds, futons, sofa beds, waterbeds, and airbeds. Finding the bed that will work best for the space you have available and the overall tone you are trying to achieve in your bedroom.

In addition to the above mentioned bedroom accessories drawers come in many shapes and sizes and offer both function and visual appeal in your bedroom. Whether you have an eclectically furnished room or a suite of matching furniture, there are many different styles and sizes of bedroom drawers that are available. Some of the more popular types of drawers that can be found in traditional bedrooms are: Dressers, lingerie chests, nightstands, chests of drawers, and bachelor chests. Any one or several of these will function to help you store clothing and other items and are great accessories for the bedroom. When shopping for bedroom accessories, be sure to compare prices not only among stores, but different items within a particular family. You may be surprised to find that more storage space occasionally costs less money.

If you lack space for hanging clothes, you may wish to purchase bedroom accessories that double as a space in which to store hanging clothes. Some excellent examples of this particular type of furniture are: chifferobes, armoires, and wardrobes. Both chifferobes and armoires offer both space for hanging clothes and drawer space as well. If you have a need for both and limited space in your bedroom, you may wish to give serious consideration to one of these versatile pieces.

Bedroom accessories come in all shapes and sizes and ultimately are a matter of choice for your tastes, needs, and available space. Find the accessories that work best for you and enjoy them!

Outdoor Kitchen Designs

August 16, 2007 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

I know what you are thinking, an outdoor kitchen? My exact thoughts when asked to write this article. However, the more I think about it, the more I see the benefits and the need to have an outdoor kitchen. It just makes sense when you think about it. Consider this if you will, you are having a big party, all of your friends, family, and neighbors are visiting, relaxing by the pool, and it is time to start preparing your food. Well generally, that means you have to leave the party, walk into your house, and start preparations within the kitchen. This means you are inside slaving away, while everyone else is enjoying themselves, you are secluded. I can see the resentment swelling up already.

Now consider this scenario. The same party, the same day, the same guests, only now you have an outdoor kitchen with everything you need readily available. Sure, it may mean you have to run inside to grab the necessary ingredients and cookware, but now you are still in the sun and fun. Outdoor kitchen designs are only limited by your imagination. That is right, you can have everything in an outdoor kitchen that you have in your household kitchen. Complete with a stovetop, areas for your utensils, ingredients, and even a refrigerator.

Everything can be built into a wall or free standing the choice is yours. Another choice you have is rather you should cover it or leave it open to let the sun shine through. Covering in great because even if the weather does not particularly cooperate with the party is not spoiled. The outdoor kitchen design can be as small or as large as you want. It can include every aspect of your kitchen complete with electrical outlets for plugging in different appliances.

Of course, the stop top would be a little different; it would instead be a grill. If you decide to cover your outdoor kitchen, you should include a range hood to vent the smoke from the area. If you need to boil sauces or makes veggies and a grill simply will not suffice, consider a side burner for these items. Make sure you add tables and chairs to your area and lighting if it gets dark. This way the party is always near, even if you are cooking.

So, where can you find ideas for your outdoor kitchen design? There are plenty of different ways you can go about getting the exact kitchen you want in your own backyard. For example, there are a great deal of manufacturers of grilling islands and grills that are more than happy to offer you their design plans for an outdoor kitchen. Additionally, if you are looking for a more personal touch, get ideas from retailers, home centers, and magazines and design your own outdoor kitchen. After the design, hire a contractor to come in and build it for you.

The end result? Your very own backyard kitchen complete with everything you need, just do not forget the personal touches.

How to Make a Fruit and Veg Kitchen Clock

August 14, 2007 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

A beautiful gift idea for anyone who spends a lot of time in the kitchen.

You will need…
4oz (100g) Plain Flour
3oz (75g) Salt
Hot Water
Paints
Spray varnish or clear lacquer Clock mechanism and clock hands (you will find these at craft shops or Maplin)

To make the Dough…
Begin by dissolving the salt in a small amount of hot water. Add the flour and mix to form dough. Add cold water if necessary but don’t make the dough too sticky.

Now you’re ready to model your clock face.

You need to start off with a base. Roll out some of the dough with a rolling pin. Use a large dinner plate or a tea tray to cut out a circle from the dough. This is the base of the clock face. Make a hole in the centre of the clock face, which is large enough to pass the clock spindle through with ease.

Roll two long sausages that are long enough to reach around the edge of the base. Twist the sausages together to create a nice rope effect. Fix the twisted strip around the base with a little cold water for glue.

Add fruit and veg to your clock face…
Use your hands to model and mould fruit or vegetable shapes out of dough, to put in place of the main numbers on the clock face - 12, 3, 6, and 9. Don’t make the fruit and vegetables so large that the hands can not move past them when the clock is finished.

Once you have made your clock face put it in the oven on a low heat for two hours. It is in the oven to dry out, not to bake so keep the heat low.

When it comes out of the oven, leave it for a couple of days to dry out completely. Then paint, spray varnish and leave to dry.

Push the clock spindle through the hole and push on the hands. The mechanism has a hole for hanging the clock on the wall.

Should You Get Help With Your Home Heating Plans

August 13, 2007 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Developing an energy efficient, yet ample, heating system for your property can be complex. Retaining a professional is a smart way to make sure you get it right.

It gets chilly in the winter in most parts of the world. This means you need to install a heating system that is tailored to your specific property characteristics to make sure the property receives equalized heat throughout. At the same time, the system must be efficient to take into account rising energy prices. This balancing act can get pretty complex.

The heating industry is where you should look for answers on your heating plans. If you expect to have the heat on for months at a time during the winter, it is all the more important to get professional advice. Retaining a heating professional will cost you money, but you will save far more over the life of the property.

A heating professional is essentially a combination of an architect, contractor and engineer. They are going to be able to look at your property and map out the best method for getting the heat where you need it while keeping your utility bill under control.

Depending on the structure of you home, the professional may recommend limited flow systems to heat certain parts of the property at certain times, geothermal heating to reduce bills and so on. The point is they are readily familiar with the available solutions while you probably have a passing knowledge of them at best. You can use their knowledge to avoid very expensive mistakes. This is one situation where using an expert is a very wise choice. Many heating system manufacturers will even supply them for free.

Installing heating systems is like getting married. Since most are imbedded in the structure of the property, you have to commit to them. Much like a divorce, trying to change them later can be expensive and messy. Get professional help so you and your property can have a long, happy life together.

Designing Woman

August 12, 2007 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

We all remember our grandmother’s house. It was either warm and welcoming or smelly and stark. Her couch was either the kind you sink into and never want to leave or the kind that when you sit on it your behind actually bounces off, as if the inanimate piece of furniture was trying to catapult you across the room.

A piece of furniture can look nice but not feel nice, which is why everyone ends up gathered in your kitchen when you have parties. That couch you thought would bring the room together so nicely did such a good job that you feel guilty breaking the monotony by entering the room. Unless your house is a wing in the Louvre, your furniture shouldn’t be museum pieces-or else you’re destined to be the type of grandparent with the “smelly” and “stark” house. And no one wants that. So, put away the Scotch guard and protective covers. New furniture is in order.

The good news is that you don’t have to choose form over function. Barbara Barry, whose line of classic, yet modern, highly functional furniture is now being carried at Robb & Stucky Interiors, who claim the largest staff of licensed interior designers in Florida and Arizona and recently earned a spot in House Beautiful’s “Top Five Furniture Stores” in addition to their five-year stint as recipients of the ARTS Award.

A likely partnership, given that Barry’s own achievements include being named to the Interior Design Hall of Fame by Interior Design magazine, and Architectural Digest’s “AD100″ for three consecutive years, received the “Star of Design” award for lifetime achievement, won “Designer of the Year” from Traditional Home magazine and “Best in Residential Design” from Interiors magazine. Despite all those fancy awards Barry’s furnishings create warmth and continuity with a distinct form that is pleasing to the eye and inviting to the body. Homes outfitted with her furniture are as comfortable as they are beautiful, simply stated, yet refined. So, you’ll never have to choose form over function (or vice versa) ever again.
