April 10, 2007 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Nowadays people not only look out for single pieces of Bedroom Furniture but also for complete Bedroom Furniture Sets, which can create sync between the bed set, and its surrounding furniture. Bedroom Furniture Sets have taken the American furniture market by storm, as there are diverse ranges of Bedroom Furniture Sets available and offered at various price ranges.

However, if there is anything that is not to be missed, that happens to be the solid maple bed sets, due to their elegance, style, functionality and non-toxic features. These Bedroom Furniture Sets are mostly hand-crafted for a long-lasting finish. Most of them usually include a bed frame, 6-drawer dresser, a mirror and two graceful nightstands. They primarily come in three categories, as Ash, Birch and Maple.

These days, traditional six-piece Bedroom Furniture Sets have been replaced by the seven- and eight-piece furniture sets, which are now extremely popular. They are specifically crafted from classy and striking maple, rather than normal particleboard or thin layers. All the furniture in this bed set is polished with a non-toxic finish to provide a sound and tranquil sleep. All the Bedroom Furniture Sets available on the market are said to be free from any defects in material or craftsmanship. Your Mattress Must Be Right for You

April 9, 2007 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Sleep is an essential part of life and a lot of us don’t get enough of it! In today’s fast-paced society, stress or for instance Alzheimer’s disease, are major factors in not getting enough sleep. A poor matress is another big reason! Although sleep is essential for good health, some need more and some seem to require less. We do not know exactly how and why sleep happens. Medical science believes that sleep helps to restore the body and brain for future activity. Of course, having the right matress is essential for a good night’s sleep. Many people around the world do not have a comfortable place to sleep, and therefore their health suffers.

Over the ages, sleep has attracted many theories and all animals sleep, even babies in the womb. Among the many myths in ancient times, sleep was thought to be when humans flirted with death as their souls wandered and that it was a time when you lost control over your mind. As time progressed, it was later believed that when you were sleeping like on a really great matress, it was a time for complete mental inactivity, or “dead to the world” type of passive state.

As you age, your sleep pattern will change. A 70-year-old person sleeps about six hours on the average and infants sleep about 16 hours a day. Life becomes extremely difficult when you do not get enough sleep, and there are many effects felt as a result of sleep deprivation. Such things as poor reading ability, task performance, poor concentration, and the ability to process information can be affected. Perceptual skills and repetitive skills related to visual patterns also suffer. Industrial and road traffic accidents are more likely to occur when you are tired. Statistics show that between five and 56% of all auto crashes and machine tool accidents are a result of fatigue.

A study done in 1995 revealed that 33% of all subjects studied actually fell asleep while driving and 10% of those had accidents. Also, people have a difficult time studying and learning as a result of sleep deprivation. Try to get a full night’s sleep. Purchase a good matress making it a top priority and the quality of your life will be much better!

Planting Bulbs - Part 4 - Staking, Mulching, Storing

April 8, 2007 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

With fall on the way, it is time to consider planting bulb flowers that we want for spring blooming. Bulbs are one of the best flower investments for the cost, properly cared for they will provide spring color in your garden for years.

Staking

Dahlias and gladioli have heavy blooms and tall stalks and may need to be supported in order to stand straight during their blooming season. You can place stakes in the proper position at the time of planting, this avoids possibly damaging the bulbs or tubers by driving in stakes after the bulb has been buried beneath the soil. Another method that works quite well is the use of a support ring.

Mulching

For fall plantings of the larger bulbs, it is recommended that the planting bed be covered with two to three inches of mulch. The use of mulch over the bed will help to control temperature changes and keep moisture from evaporating prematurely. Planting beds of small bulbs that bloom in very early spring should not be mulched.

Digging and Storing Spring Bulbs

The dormant period for spring bulbs is the summer. Spring bulbs go dormant in late spring and early summer when the foliage dies. At the same time as the foliage dies, the roots are also dieing. Fall weather, will bring the bulbs out of their dormant stage and the root systems will commence growing bringing nutrients and moisture back to the bulbs.

The time to dig up bulbs is when they are in their dormant stage. By digging the bulbs up you can divide them and spread them out evenly across the bed when replanting.

Bulbs that have been dug up must be stored in a well ventilated location and replanted in the fall. If you do not dig up your bulbs every year, daffodils and crocus should be dug up at least every five years so that they can be thinned out. If you do not thin these plants out you will end up with uneven plant height, a smaller flower size and uneven blooms.

Use a spading fork to dig up summer flowering bulbs when the leaves have turned yellow. Bulbs should have all the soil washed off them and be dried with paper towel. This is not necessary if you are storing bulbs in pots with soil.

Some bulbs do much better if the soil is left around the bulb; achimenes, begonia, canna, caladium, dahlia and ismene are in that group. The best method to store the aforementioned bulbs is in clumps on slightly moist sawdust or peat moss in a cool location. Prior to planting separate and wash the bulbs.

Bulbs that are washed should be dried and then stored in a shaded dry location, keep away from sunlight. In most cases, bulbs should not be stored in areas where temperatures drop below 50 degrees or rise above 70 degrees Fahrenheit. The best temperature range is 60 to 65 degrees.

Before storing your bulbs, they should be inspected for disease and insect problems. Bulbs that are unusually small, soft or do not look healthy should be discarded.

It is important that air circulates freely around the bulbs in storage. Placing your bulbs on wire screens, only two layers deep will prevent heat buildup that will lead to bulb decay.

When in doubt visit your local nursery and ask an expert - this is not the time to speak to a part-time worker at your local big box retailer.

Simple Way to Get More Heat from Your Fireplace

April 7, 2007 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

For some people, a fireplace might as well be a video of flaming logs. Their primary interest is the welcoming ambiance a fireplace’s blaze presents. If, however, you expect your fireplace to provide heat in exchange for your log-carrying, fire-building efforts, (or in the case of gas logs, in exchange for your gas bill), it’s time to maximize your fireplace’s heat output.

There are various contraptions designed to return more of a wood or gas fireplace’s heat into the room and stanch the flow of that precious heat from escaping up the chimney. Many of them involve fans and vents and considerable expense. But one of the most time-honored, hassle-free, and least expensive methods of increasing a fire’s heat output is making a comeback: the fireback.

A fireback is a sheet of metal, sized in proportion to the fireplace, that’s placed against your back fireplace wall. Firebacks can be set on the hearth’s floor and just leaned against the back fireplace wall, but often they are secured by placing them in supporting braces which keep the fireback from sliding. Firebacks come in two main styles: the cast iron fireback and the stainless steel fireback.

The traditional cast iron fireback, popular in earlier times and making a revival now, is a sheet of heavy, black, cast iron. Often they are cast with a design, such as a fleur de lis or eagle, to add a decorative touch to this functional fireplace accessory.

The cast iron firebacks work on the same principle as heating radiators. The metal is heated (by hot water in the case of radiators and by the fire in the case of firebacks), and then that heat is radiated into the room.

Although attractive and functional, the cast-iron firebacks are too heavy for many people to manage easily. Their weight also adds to their shipping costs, and therefore to their total price.

A more modern fireback design, one that is growing in popularity, is made of a sheet of very gently curved, tempered stainless steel. These stainless steel firebacks warm your room in two ways. First, like the cast iron firebacks, they radiate the heat of the fire forward into the room. But they also reflect the heat, as well as the light, of the fire into the room.

Stainless steel firebacks weigh only one-sixth as much as a similarly sized cast iron fireback, so they are easier to manage and less costly to ship. But their main appeal may be their price: They cost only a fraction as much as their cast iron cousins. Whereas a cast iron fireback, depending on size, can cost $250 to $700, the stainless steel versions usually go for $50 to $150.

Both cast iron and stainless steel firebacks dramatically increase the room-warming capacity of your wood or gas fireplace fire. The addition of this simple fireplace accessory to your hearth can mean warmer toes and lower heating bills.

Adding Value Through Your Bathroom

April 6, 2007 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

If like thousands of other people every day, you are looking to sell up and move house, you will want to give yourself the best possible chance of getting as close to, or even more than, the asking price for your own property.

In today’s unpredictable housing market, getting anywhere near the asking price of your house can be almost impossible, unless you are offering potential buyers exactly what they want. A poorly decorated room or a cluttered garden can be enough to put many people off purchasing your humble abode. You may know yourself that certain areas of your house could do with improvements, but you simply can not afford the outlay to renovate those rooms. This usually leads to one of two scenarios.

1. The offending room is left in its existing condition and viewer after viewer will go away without even considering an offer.

2. Furniture is rented to paper over the cracks in the offending room, creating unnecessary costs until the house is sold. This also causes the problem of a house being ’sold as seen’, in which case, the buyer would expect all the furnishings to be there when they moved in.

The first scenario is obviously the worst case, the chances are that eventually the property will be sold, but perhaps for an amount significantly below the asking price.

The second scenario involves regular financial outlay until a suitable offer is made and accepted, which could be weeks or even months.

However, these two scenarios never have to occur, especially if it is your bathroom which is causing the difficulties. As the bathroom is the most visited room in the house, it is imperative that this room stands out to the buyer. If you have lived in your existing property for a number of years, there’s a good chance that your bathroom will have remained the same since you first moved in, but because you’ve got used to having a green sink and toilet, you see this as standard. Be aware - there is nothing that will put off a potential buyer more than matching coloured sanitary ware in a bathroom! Combine this with a dull, grey bath and you are asking for trouble.

When a potential buyer walks into a bathroom, they want to see 3 things:

1. A clean, modern or traditional white bathroom suite with chrome fittings.

2. A simple layout with a choice of facilities, e.g. a bath and a shower cubicle, or at the very least, a shower bath.

3. Plenty of room and storage space.

Taste is down to the individual but generally speaking, as long as your bathroom has clean, bright fixtures and fittings, a potential buyer will go away without having to worry about completely ripping out the bathroom and starting from scratch. By giving them something to work with, you are significantly increasing your chances of selling the property.

Achieving the above is not an expensive task. Complete bathroom suites can be purchased for under

Hydroponics Gardening - An Introduction To Hydroponics Gardening For Beginners (Part 7) - Hard Water

April 4, 2007 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

The Basics of Hydroponics

Your Water Hardness is a Critical Factor for Success.

What Is Water Hardness And Why Does It Matter?

Water Hardness refers to the alkaline mineral ion count, usually from
Calcium Carbonate and bicarbonate. Water with a high count is called
Hard Water. You can usually tell if you are in one of the many hard
water areas of Europe because your kettle will get a build up of ‘Lime
scale’ on the inside.

Hardness of water can be measured in parts per million by using a total
alkalinity test kit. These cheap simple test kits are available from
your local hydroponics retailer and are quite accurate enough for the
purpose. If your water tests at anything over 150ppm it should be
considered to be hard. Do not be alarmed if your water is hard, it does
not mean you cannot grow things using hydroponic methods.

Why Does It Matter If My Water Is Hard?

For many years growers in some areas have had unacceptable results, with
low yields and poor plant performance. The reasons for this have been
unclear until it was realised that the plants were suffering from a
chemical imbalance. Hydroponics growers were particularly badly
affected in these areas.

Growing hydroponically using normal nutrients means adding a balanced
solution of chemicals to the hard water. The hard water already contains
an excess of some of the essential minerals that the plant needs and so
the solution quickly becomes imbalanced in the nutrient tank.

In order to reduce the pH of the standard nutrient solution the
bicarbonate ions have to be neutralised. Because these alkaline ions
buffer the solution it is necessary to add large amounts of Phosphoric
acid to the nutrient in order to reduce the pH. This in turn increases
the Phosphate ion content of the solution causing an imbalance. This
imbalance can have serious consequences for your plants in a very short
period of time.

What can I do abut it?

The simplest way around the problem is to use a nutrient formulated
specifically for hard water areas. A Hard Water nutrient has been
produced with the correct balance of nutrients to compensate for the
excess alkaline mineral ions in the water. These nutrients are also much
more acidic to combat the buffering action of the bicarbonates.

The benefit of using this formulation is that you will not have to add
large amounts of adjusting chemicals to your nutrient in order to achieve
the correct pH. Also your plants will have a balanced nutrient solution
containing all the ingredients they require to thrive. This means that
your crop will grow up healthy with better growth and a superior yield.

Lace Curtains, Valances, Tiers and Panels Charming Window Coverings To Mix and Match

April 3, 2007 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

LACE CURTAINS - THE COMPONENT PARTS

Designing Lace Curtain window coverings can be very confusing. Let’s try to simplify the challenge by starting with the very basics. Most major Lace Curtain suppliers offer many different pieces to be used in combinations to arrive at completely different looks. The pieces have various names including One Piece Swags, Fan Swags, Swag Pairs, Valances, Tiers and Panels. They are woven into delicate lace patterns or stunningly bold Macrame ring lace. Depending how you use them, your window treatment can be formal or casual, simple or ornate. Whatever combination you use can greatly influence your over-all design goals.

USE YOUR IMAGINATION TO CREATE YOUR VERY OWN LOOK

The simplest design would be to use a Lace Valance and a Lace Tier together as in the picture shown here. This picture uses a Macrame Ring Lace, however, any Lace Valance and Tier can be used for the same effect. This design is shown on tension rods inside the window casing. The treatment also can be used where both Valance and Tier are mounted on rods that are attached to the wall outside of the window frame. Another attractive style would be to mount the Valance on an outside mount rod and the Tier on a tension rod inside the jamb. In yet a different version you could mount the Valance on an outside mount rod and use a full length Lace Panel or pair of Panels on a rod under the Valance rod. One of these options may be just what you want but, hold on, we are just getting started.

You may want a more formal treatment as in the picture shown here. It consists of a Swag Pair with a Valance in between and a full length Panel underneath. As another option, in a narrower window, you could eliminate the in between Valance and just use the Swag Pair or a One Piece Swag. If you use two Panels you could tie them back to each side for a totally different style. Also, a Priscilla look could be created by using a second Panel underneath the first Panel and tying them back to opposite sides.

There is another option that uses a little of all of the above ideas but is more informal and could be used in a den, dinette or kitchen area. It consists of a Swag Pair with or without a Valance in between and a shorter Tier in the window instead of a full length Panel.

As you can see, Lace Curtains can be highly personalized to create the very look that makes your home warm and inviting We are not finished yet. Let’s think even more outside of the box. What if you have a curved top window. That’s easy. Just find a solid metal rod and bend it to the same contour as your window frame and use the same designs we just discussed. How about another idea. If you have two corner windows you have the option of treating them as one window or two windows. You can mount separate curtains on each window or you can make the two windows look like one giving the effect of a much larger window. You would use one of the Swag Pair pieces on each window and Tiers below on each window. The same thing can be accomplished on two side by side windows on a flat wall.

THE MANY NOT SO MYSTERIOUS WAYS TO CREATE WINDOW COVERING BEAUTY IN YOUR HOME

Hopefully with this new knowledge you will really enjoy creating your very own professional looking d

Greenhouse Calamities - Thoughts from a Novice Gardener

April 2, 2007 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

Greenhouses are a great addition to anyone’s garden. They come in all different sizes and you can nestle them right where you want them and with smaller versions of greenhouses you can move them quite easily. That said, as great as they look and of course smell, there should be some type of manual to buy when you are first setting up shop in there. There are many things no one bothers to tell you and if you don’t know, you don’t ask. Here are five things I learned by plodding along on my own:

1. Never assume that your seeds are not growing and then buy plants instead. I started growing tomato seeds, in the proper seed tray, and within a month nothing had happened. However, I used pretty expensive potting soil and didn’t want to waste it so I dumped it on the floor of the greenhouse and turned it in. Then, I planted 6 tomato plants into the ground and had homemade salsa recipes salivating in my head. A month later I had well over 30 tomato plants tumbling over each other. The worst part was that I didn’t label the plants and wasn’t sure which ones to thin out. I thinned and ended up with the orange pixie variety mostly and they were about the size of a mutant cherry tomato.

2. Never assume that just because your garden is now “indoors” that you won’t get an insect infestation. If you are afraid of insects, greenhouse gardening is not much better than being out in nature. After you plant your garden, whether in grow bags, on tables or directly in the ground, look up. There he isSammy the Slug peering down on you with a slight smirk on his face. If you are allergic to bee stings, every year at least one gets in your greenhouse and seems to twoddle around in there for what seems like an eternity.

3. Never think you are a pack mule and can water your plants enough by using a gardening can or bucket. You can’t! With the heat and the sun shining through the glass the plants need more water than the outside plants. You need a mister, some type of irrigation system, ideally, and at bare minimum a hose. This means you’ll require a water source. Think about it when you are putting the greenhouse in place. If you’re water source is close to the house you must put the greenhouse within reach. Or, you can be like me carry about 20 buckets of water out each night and only water

Stress Free Bathroom Remodeling

April 1, 2007 | Category:Articles-Host | Author: admin

What is the hardest and most stressful part of remodeling your bathroom?

Is it the plumbing or the tiling or the painting? Perhaps it’s the electrical work that’s most difficult, or the physical aspect of removing and refitting large items like bathtubs and toilets? Well I think that the most difficult and stressful part of any home improvement or remodeling project is something else entirely

Project management of a bathroom-remodeling project is the most stressful job.

You probably think that designing your new bathroom and selecting all the wonderful things you want to go into it is difficult. You are right, it is but it’s nowhere near as difficult as managing the project as it progresses day to day.

Why is project management such a problem?

Project management is about developing and carrying out a plan that will take your dream design into spectacular reality in the shortest time possible. When there are many contractors involved in the job, or I should say many individuals involved in the job, formulating a plan that might work is difficult enough as it is. Keeping the job on track and to the plan as it progresses is far more difficult.

There is more information about managing the stress of bathroom remodeling in the article Supervisor Stress - Bathroom Remodeling

First create a project plan

To create a project plan you first identify all the tasks that need to be done like stripping the old bathroom, fitting the new one, building work, tiling, plumbing, electrics etc. Then you work out any dependencies between the tasks like the fixtures must be in place before the tiling can start. Then you put all the tasks on a timeline showing the duration of the task and when it should start and finish. The correct name for a plan like this is a Gantt chart and should impress your contractors when you pull it out in front of them.

Keeping your bathroom remodeling project on plan

This is the difficult part and can take up a lot of your time if you are going to do the job properly and keep the project on track. All would be well of course if nothing ever went wrong but it will. I’ve been involved with the project management of many projects and my mantra is this “If it can go wrong then it probably will”. Something will go wrong at some point you can bet on it.

So how do you keep the project on plan when things go wrong?

Try to anticipate problems that might arise before they happen and try to have an alternative plan ready. For instance you might want to keep in touch with the contract firm that you didn’t give the job to just in case your first choice drops out or one of the workers falls ill. Try to locate more than one source for your fixtures just in case your supplier fails to deliver. Make sure that you know how to hire drying equipment at short notice in case you get a flood.

The most important aspect to keeping a project on track is to anticipate and deal with problems before they arise but if you can’t do that then the next best thing is to react to problems quickly and efficiently.

At the end of the day project managing your bathroom remodeling job is a full time job and if you want to avoid the stress that it brings then you should hire someone to project manage for you. It may be more expensive but a lot better for your health.
